@TheSolaris810 I'm afraid to say that to get past the first round of auditions, you don't need to be that good, therefore this performance was more than good enough. Anyone can tell from this that the guy has a unique voice but the song is hardly the one to showcase this.

@archiefan118 Because Will was the very last to audition, one of the producers him advised to wake up the judges by doing something and they suggested he danced. The poor guy was put on the spot. He isn't a bad dancer now though, check out his Live in London DVD. He was introduced as William Robert Young!
At the beginning of the show they addressed him as William then it was dropped to Will. He is known by his family and friends as William but known in his career as Will Young.

See this is a talent show - go in a room, sing, judges say a little bit, you get told if you're through or not, then you leave! Not like now - huge build up, interviews and a sob story, then on a stage in front of 100s of people, then repeat sob stories to judge, sing for a bit, have judges insult you in front of the nation OR have a standing ovation and a tear-laden review of your performance, dripping with compliments. Then you leave to have your face all over the papers the next day!

Yes, the British version came first though and it was called Pop Idol. It ended in 2003 and was replaced by X-Factor (in 2004) which American Idol is also being replaced with.

It's a shame how reality TV had changed so much now - X factor only seems to make finalists of contestants that are mainstream and will make money. Glad he got in there early before the other crap that gets through these days.
I said that nowadays the acts on X factor etc are manufactured to emulate Beyonce etc. They are cheap COPIES. I didn't say that Beyonce or Britney were rubbish, I was saying that it's tacky the way entertainment shows try to make copies of them and fail.
I love how Pop Idol was all about the contestants. While I love X Factor, I do think it focuses on the panel too much. In this clip, the judges are just doing their jobs...look at Nikki here in her denim jacket compared to Dannii and Cheryl today dressed to the nines. Love Will in this-his moves are so funny!:D

It's a shame how reality TV had changed so much now - X factor only seems to make finalists of contestants that are mainstream and will make money. I know Will is mainstream + makes money but he's not fake like the ones you see now - he doesn't mime and he acts himself. Now they all copy Britney/Beyonce etc. It's like a popstar conveyor belt. Glad he got in there early before the other crap that gets through these days.

I said that nowadays the acts on X factor etc are manufactured to emulate Beyonce etc. They are cheap COPIES. I didn't say that Beyonce or Britney were rubbish, I was saying that it's tacky the way entertainment shows try to make copies of them and fail.

I love how Pop Idol was all about the contestants. While I love X Factor, I do think it focuses on the panel too much. In this clip, the judges are just doing their jobs...look at Nikki here in her denim jacket compared to Dannii and Cheryl today dressed to the nines. Love Will in this-his moves are so funny!:D
