Honda's Automatic have never been that good for longevety, I rather have an Manual with out any Electronic Computers that need to be replaces down the road. Don't buy Hunday/Kia/Ford Crap If you want the best car, it can only be a Honda. Honda Engineering is the best I have seen and parts are so much easier to come by than some Elantra. If I break down anywhere in the US, I know I can get Honda parts same day! 15y Mechanic talking.
I've come back to comment after owning my Fit for a little over two years now and what can I say? I LOVE IT! Love it so much that I now drive it more than I ride my motorcycle (sad actually). It's fun to drive, sips gasoline and everything "fits" in it. For anybody considering one.....buy one knowing you will not regret your purchase.
I'm a proud owner of a Honda vehicle (a 1998 Civic), but when I get the money, I would definitely get the Fit Sport (white color, silver, or black). I prefer my ride to be sporty, luxorious and all that jazz, but have the piece of mind and that is Honda's build quality and reliability, and THIS is the car that I'm planning to get in the future cause it has everything I need.
@kosokuadam If you did Buy the Elantra, you just made a bad choice, Your Korean Car has the worst re-sale Value...why? Because it is a Hunday and they suck, I'm a shop mngr and My Mechanic's Laugh at Hundays, Kia's and Ford Focuses, Be wise and Buy a Honda
You maybe explain this somewhere on your site but I can't seem to find it. How do you test gas mileage: hand calculations based on fill-ups, the in-dash calculation, or something more sophisticated?
@mpgomatic That's interesting. I have read comments elsewhere about the Fit's in-dash mpg being fairly optimistic. I actually drive an 09 Fit Sport myself and I'm going to start comparing fill-up calculations to the display calculations. But I definitely think it's not hard to outdo the EPA mileage on the highway. Before I got my car I was interested in the Fiesta, another really nice car IMO. Are you reviewing that too?
@stnemmoc Aye. There can be variations both ways ... it's not an exact science, by any means. We fill up at the same exact pump whenever possible and perform the lion's share of our highway testing on the identical route. We'll have our Fiesta review posted shortly.
I regret buying a Civic now. I just got a 2010 Civic LX back in april. Paid $18k out the door after tax, etc. for the same price i could've gotten a fit sport
Yes, the Scion Xd also gets over 40 mpg on the highway, and 29 in town. Too bad the Fit is so under-powered, and looks so feminine. Still, I give it a thumbs up, since it is reliable although under-powered. A better choice would be the Scion Xd.
@Tophairybutt OK I'm biased because I own a Fit so here we go - Scion Xd has less interior room, and from what I've heard less reliability. The Fit does not have all the awesome accessories that are standard in a Scion, but I think overall it is a smarter buy. It is a Honda engine, which means you rev the crap out of it - I assure you it's not underpowered, just need to get it up to 4,000RPMs. I do like the front of the Xd, the styling is awesome, but overall I like the way the Fit looks too.
@mpgomatic Many thanks for the feedback! It always seems to be the PC laptops that have this problem, although MSIE is usually part of the equation. :/
You know what you Americans want for MPG.. a 2001 Vauxhall Astra 1.7DTI. It'll do 55-60MPG. Just to put this into perspective, this is an engine that's a 12 year old design..
Now, THIS is the car I want. I don't need a bulky awd vehcile to get to where I'm going, save it for the near future. The Fit has cool looks, great MPGs, flexible cargo arrangements, great engine, everything I need for commuting around town. Plus solid build quality and reliability.
Great review! When you calculated the gas mileage, did you use the car's mpg readout? My dad bought a 2010 Fit Sport A/T That has around 5500 miles on it right now, and i found out the other day that the gauge is about 5 mpg too optimistic! It read 39.4, but when i calculated it by hand, I got 34.9. Did you observe this porblem on your review car?
I really want to like it, but its one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen. It looks like a miniature Minivan. Honda pigeonholed themselves into the soccer mom market with this one.
The paddle shifters are still automatic transmission; you're just telling the car when to shift. There is no clutch, everything is electronic. The paddle shifters do NOT replace the function of a stick shift car. Get a real stick shift if you want to shift gears in cars. You will get a better feel of the engine through a stick shift and clutch
with 117 hp, a 1.5l 4 cyl engine, 33 miles per gallon and on top of all that it's an auto paddle shifter (meaning too pussy for a 5 speed). 9 seconds is pretty expected don't ya think? i really don't think that honda intended this to be a track car... although some are doing it. that's what the si and the s2k is for son.
I just got my Blue 2009 Honda Fit Sport a few days ago. I am totally in love with this car. The paddle shifters are awesome and I've been able to get 36mpg on highway with them instead of the average of 33. It's a huge difference from my old 2000 Malibu though with the lack of hp but I could care less since I haven't had a new car in 10yrs!
I just bought the Black 2009 Fit Sport and pick it up tomorrow! With the Cash for Clunkers program, I got $4,500 for my POS 1988 Lincoln Towncar (maybe worth $300), so I got my Fit for $13,000!!
you have the #9 out of 10 car that were bought in the cash for clunkers program. NJ. i have the new version since march. i noticed that its the best car here in its class. hell yeah!!!
I am buying a black on black 2009 honda fit sport today!!!! its ADORABLE, and sooo practical for city dwelling, honestly, you can park that thing anywhere..(I live in Richmond)
I'm really stuck. We, my family wants to trade our 1998 ford explorer for the cash for clunkers program and they are going to take the money to help me buy my first car. I don't whether to go with this or the Aveo 5.
Have you test driven both cars? Once you've experienced the Aveo and Fit from the driver's seat, you're bound to develop a preference. FWIW, the MINI is the most fun to drive in this class, but it's also the most expensive, by far. If you can use AWD, you might also want to look at the Suzuki SX4 Crossover. There are also some crazy deals on the Pontiac G5 right now.
Yeah I went out to my honda dealership and test drove a fit sport without the Navi. Great car and I absolutely love it. I'm going to have to wait a while though until they have a base model with a stick shift. I test drove the standard transmission and loved it. I couldn't ever live with the automatic version. I've driven stick since I got my permit. I really can't wait until the new stock comes in. IM SO EXCITED!!!!
I am so jealous of you, I think the honda fit is the best car for the price and I strongly recommend you to get the mugen body kit. could you do me a favor? once you get the car can you post a video on youtube so I can see it?
believe me I will. I might actually make a review of it. I think the one that I will be able to get is going to be black but that all depends on what the dealership orders. I promise I will make a vid.
Yeah it is. I tried the aveo and it was nice but it really feels like a cheap car. Plus it's just a Daewoo with a chevy badge. Also in Maine up here I really need the ABS and you can't get that on an aveo.
I don't see why anyone wouldn't. It's a small entry car that isn't shitty. It's actually a really great cart and with Cash for Clunkers it Makes it really affordable. Still have to get a loan though.
what a GREAT first car...I traded my '99 Acura TL for a '09 Fit Sport and I LOVE the car, plus I get 35-40 miles per gallon! It's the best car available for the money today!
i dont know.......im debating if I should trade in my 2003 maxima se for a fit? having problems with the maxima....and the fit is the only thing i can afford if i want new.
I I own a 2009 Fit Sport and I love its handling, gas mileage and looks. The ride is a bit stiff, if you do a lot of dirt road traveling the Fit wont like it! The interior of the Fit is a cut above other vehicles at this price point, but will lose in a comparo with the Maxima, but then the Maxima costs 10k more. Best advice is to try a long test drive (overnight if possible) and realize its a great car for what it IS, an entry level vehicle, and remember its NOT a 30k intro luxery level car.....
How would you compare this car to the Suzuki Sx4 Crossover? I am trying to decide between these two cars and i am having a lot of trouble doing so. Please help!! o.o
Does anyone know if by 2010 the fit will come with standar VSA? By 2012 it will be mandatory, so why not make it now? That shows when a companie cares about safety. I dont want the navi in order to get because that navi is crazy expensive 2.000dlls! with that same amount i can get a good one with dvd player for half the price. I have an 07 civic with stock navi and it was a waste of money. it works good but its too much for what it does.
I have no doubt about fit's performance and efficiency.
However, I am a little bit concern about the driver seat space and support. I am about your size and based on your experience, will the front seats provide enough support and comfort on long trips? say 3-4 hours with occasional traffic?
It's a somewhat subjective question ... everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to seating. The best bet is to stop in at your local Honda dealer and ask if it would be possible take out a Fit for an extended test drive.
That having been said, I wish that aftermarket seat swaps were more common ... how cool would it be to have Audi-level seats (with heating and power lumbar) in an economy car? :)
i totally agree. it is so hard to find any place that has a large selection of aftermarket seats that can swap into new cars. someone needs to get on that and watch the cash come flowing in!
38.1's not bad for a '99. Your Corolla has an OBDII port that will provide a ton of information. You can hook up a ScanGauge or other device to get the real time info ... not just estimated MPG, but precise data including throttle position ... use this data and you'll fine tune your right foot ... :)
I do this week after week, car after car. Fill the tank, drive (with a light foot), fill the tank again. Combined mileage is based on tank fills, while highway mileage is based on the trip computer.
Good review... would be nice to see your numbers with the manual gear box, I bet it would be even better considering that an automatic trans saps some ponies...

Where is this OBDII port you are talking about?
MoxleyMauser 2 years ago
The OBDII port is located underneath the dashboard, on the driver's side.

34.3 combined? 44 highway? Are you positive this is true, because all other sources I have looked at give the Fit about 33 to 34 highway.
