I need to lear to read/write music and sight read really good before I get here.I gotta feelin all the teachers are this kickass haha.I hope I could make it and afford it!
@mmim4 If you're going to GIT, then yes you should definitely at least have a few years under your belt as a guitarist.. If you're going for a different instrument, then focus on that one, obviously. But if you're wanting to go to GIT, then you should probably have 3-5 years experience playing guitar first to get the most out your lessons. Without a good, firm grasp on the basics of the instrument, you're only wasting your time and a lot of money on what would otherwise be a good experience.
@JSGayMusic would that include a rudimentary understanding of theory and how it applies to guitar? or can one go to GIT with practically no knowledge of theory?
@kempobrad They start you from square one. You can come here with absolutely no knowledge on theory whatsoever and they'll help you along. If that's the case though, realize that some stuff in the beginning might be confusing for you. I learned a lot of theory in Highschool, so when I came to MI, I already had a very firm grasp on the concepts of scales, modes, harmony, theory, etc..
Theory can be tough to get for some people.. I guess I was just lucky, and picked up on it pretty easily.
@kempobrad any time. If you have any questions at all about the school, don't hesitate to ask. I'm more than happy to share. I just finished the guitar program this month.
@JSGayMusic i really want to go to this school, im only 15, and ive been playing guitar for about 4 years, but i cant read music, and i know barely any theory, what would you recomend me doing to prepare myself for this school?
@Akalack they start from square one with theory and reading, so you don't technically have to know any. That being said, I still recommend learning how to do it before hand, because if you can test into higher levels that just gives you more time to study the things you want to study with the teachers you want to study with. Trust me, you'd have no problems getting in, even now.
@Akalack well honestly, teaching yourself theory probably won't work. It's not really a subject that very many can just read about on their own and understand. You kind of need a teacher who understands it that can help break it down into its core components (just like anything else) and explain it in ways that'll make it easier to understand.
Talk to your highschool band director, those guys usually know a decent amount of theory from college training. Maybe your school even offers it.
@Shredthemstrings4388 What does it take to get into MI? I actually moved to California to go there and my uncle went there back in the 80s and was taught by Paul Gilbert, but is there like, an audition and stuff to get in?

Just occurred to me that many guitarists use the call answer method but not quite like this. I like it!
