  • Hello, could someone please tell me if you cover with dirt the small green sprout growing out of the garlic bulb when planting? I have planted the bulb covering this green sprout. Thanks!

  • thanks for this info , im going to try this this year , but do you have to plant them in the fall only ? i wanted to start them in the spring . this is something i have never tried my self before . cant wait . thanks again !

  • What is the shelf life of a fresh garlic clove?

    Should I refrigerate?

    Thanks.

  • Great tips!! Many thanks for this video! Really good guide!

  • How long does a Garlic take to sprout? :)

  • 6 inches, wow, that 's a pretty big distance. I've experimented with distances for a while and I find that production for the space you have is higher if you plant them about 4-5 inches apart. Sure they'll shade each other out a bit more and that will make them a bit smaller, but as far as the quantity and overall production, more seems to be better. If you want to have maxed out size bulbs, I would suggest 6-8 inches, but if you're going for production, plant them closer.

  • Thanks for the video..

  • Ah garlic time again :)

  • I set my first garlic patch ov bulbs (2 pounds) into the ground a few weeks ago, and many of them have sprouted already. I just need to set a few inches of mulch before the first freeze. Looking forward to some fresh garlic in the spring.

  • Garlic needs good soil. It is recommended adding manure and bone meal to the garlic beds a month before planting.

  • I planted the softneck garlic last year in my raised bed garden and did not produced large bulbs like yours,(I did choose the biggest cloves) do i need to keep fertilizing them when they grow? any tips would be greatful. Envy your harvest. From: Auckland NZ

  • The video is very informative however, once you get past the begining of your video I can barely hear you even though I have my volume all the way up.

  • Thank you for the educational, informative and eloquently compiled video.

  • Some websites say to plant it pointy end down?

  • i have some garlic I bought at the grocery store that has a long green shoot about one inch long growing out the top. Is it because they sprouting already? Would it be OK to plant them n the ground like this?

  • awesome thanks!

  • So has anyone heard about getting garlic with mites or a virus? Just wondering how to avoid this or find garlic without this problem.

  • TY

  • Thanks for the tips. Also what is the name of that song played in this clip.

  • @reneecalling It's called "Dig In", by Lenny Kravitz

  • @Sunshyne276 Thank you very much!

  • Thanks!

  • love the vid but pls do somethng abt the audio. :D hope to grow my very own garden soon.

  • this video helps alot thanks. last year i planted mostly the small cloves and i never thought to plant them in the fall and cover them , i figured they would die or something.

  • Great! I've just planted some Garlic (French Thermidrome - which smells really strong) here in the UK and look forward to the results.

  • Even a seed can grow without top soil.

  • why does the audio just fail at the last half of the video..

  • WTF? This is planting? he is enjoy oneself.

    Production in poland its planting

  • Ok, so I planted mine 4 inches deep, am I screwed?

  • @000Winter000 You planted a little deep, but some growers plant that deep. If you are in a colder climate it may be to your benefit. Don't worry, you will be okay.

  • Thank you for your instructions on planting garlic. I will be adding this video to my blog on the Healthy balanced Meals website. We grow garlic in our flower gardens, they make excellent background green and have beautiful flowers.

  • what about growing it from bulbils? you didn't mention that

  • That is awesome, Garlic is the goodness!

  • hey i guess u wrote the garlic article in wikipedia!

  • I was told to trim the greens so the bulbs get bigger is that true cause it didnt' seem to work????

  • @sushi123 You're supposed to cut off the flowers, not the whole green part..

  • I found a bulb in my fridge that was sprouting shoots, so I thought 'what the heck' and separated the cloves and planted them. They seem to be doing fine BUT it is May 7, not Fall so I am guessing I am wasting my time? I didnt peel the skins off, nor use fertilizer. Just store bought potting soil, and covered them with course wood shavings.

  • Most interesting. You are a dean amongst men. Planting them in autumn(fall), with that 'helling' technique. Most enligthening! Thanks for this, might try it at the end of this year.

  • Yeah, theres nothing but chinese garlic in ireland

  • I like my Chinese to be made by local ingredients ? Im sorry i know what he means but that sounds such a retarded sentence!

  • im donating $100

  • I live in California can I do this in spring/summer ?

  • Perfect! You answered all my questions. Now...off to the garden to plant.

    THANKS!

  • You can do whatever you want to! (keeping it alive is a different matter altogether!) LOL!

  • can I plant the clove upside down?

  • you can but it will take twice as long to grow up and use much of the plants energy just growing to a regular size instead of getting bigger.

I dont see why you would though since it is JUST AS EASY to do it the RIGHT WAY

  • Thanks. The day I asked the question, I had just planted my garlic upside down. But then I dug them all up and corrected them.

  • @Kuoharrison1 Sounds just like me. I do something then I go look it up and found I did it wrong and had to do it over. But I'm learning. =)

  • nope or the plant won't grow up the soil

  • u cant because the plant thats going to come out of it will be in a "loop" shape...and all the energy will be put in to that one procedure...while it could have been used if you did it the right way

  • If you plant it upside down it'll sprout in China and you'll have to import it all over again. Break the cycle - plant it correctly.

  • thats funny

  • @bunchathrees rotfl :))

  • @bunchathrees lmao

  • LOL I just quoted this same thing and then I read your it'll sprout in China !! Great garlic minds think alike :-))

  • @Kuoharrison1 idk

  • Thank you!

  • You're welcome!

  • Crazy-I had some garlic cloves just sitting on my stove, and after a few weeks I looked at them, and they sprouted! Its neat. No water. Then I planted them.

  • @Trakehner20 me 2 my dad made me search this up, so here i am 4 his lack of experience >:l

  • I live in Southern Nevada. I have garlic growing in my herb garden. When should I harvest it?

  • It depends on when you planted it. You can actually harvest when ever you want, the garlic is good to eat at any time. But if you want big fat cloves you want to give it plenty of time to mature. In northern NM, where I live, I usually harvest the garlic that I plant in the fall of the year before in mid to late june. The garlic I plant in early spring gets harvested at the end of summer, beginning of fall. Hope that helps. Happy gardening!

  • thank you

  • I live in Virginia. When is it best to plant garlic in my area ??

  • just wanna ask what is the specific type of soil that garlic will really grow better and faster????

    plssss i need your answer..

  • How often do you water them? How long does it take to harvest them? I live in southern California.I am growing on inside in a pot.

  • Intro is not great, skip to 1:25 to get right to planting instructions.

  • good stuff.

  • How do you know when they're ready to harvest?

  • Harvest then.. then you will see if they are good or not to harvest!!

  • when the top shoots start to brown

  • Takadi.....I guess that's how long it takes. It's an old gardening saying....and it works. I don't suppose you have to abide to the rule strictly, but that';s what the saying is, and it is easy to remember.

  • Great instructions. Thanks!

  • rule of thumb for garlic...plant on the shortest day and harvest on the longest

  • Why is that?

  • can it grow in the tropics or just during winter?

  • You were planting garlic in the fall. Is that necessary? Can it be planted early spring?

  • Yes, if you're in a warm or long season climate.

  • I'm not. Ohio. Can They be stared indoors and transplanted? Thanks

  • I've never heard of people doing that. You should be ok planting them outside in the early spring. They might not grow as large as ones planted in the fall, but bigger's not always better.

  • @23latheman23 I've heard you can force them to start by putting in the freezer or fridge (I just forced a head of mine to start in the fridge). That might let you start them at odd times.

  • @23latheman23 You can plant garlic in Spring or even in the summer. But to my experience it doesn't grow big bulbs as it does in the fall.

  • nice job.more action than talking.thanks!

  • Do you have a video on building your greenhouse? I want to see how you did it.

    I am not kidding!

  • that was very helpful....thanx

  • Great Job! I'm planning to plant garlic tomorrow :)

  • Thanks very much.

  • That's amazing you almost quoted the Sunset Western Garden book word for word. Cloves pointed end up 1 in. deep. 3-6 in. apart and rows 15 in. apart. It's looks really simple I'm going to plant garlic next year. I often cook garlic with eggs, hash browns and sausages

  • Hi, I just put my kitchen scraps in a hole in the back yard behind the tree. I have a roto-tiller that I till leaves and scraps together and keep it watered a bit... Seems to work. Never smells and breaks down normally with live worms being worm happy. Am I doing okay with composting?

  • thank you for the video. It makes it seem easy! Now I will go try myself.

  • I love garlic. And it's so good for you. Great video.

  • wow garlic

  • great video

  • Gracias!!

  • nice video, it is well explaned and covers a good amount of information. keep it up!

  • I was gonna plant today will get garlic at the end of summer? Or do u put it in the ground at the end of summer over winter for next years harvest?

  • I'm planning to plant garlic tomorrow so I was interested in what you have to say and think your video is very good. I am in the UK so while the methods are the same I always aim to get the garlic into the ground either in November or February. I try to get broad beans in at the same time and it's amazing to see the plants not only survive but seem to thrive if there is cold weather and snow.

  • Great Job...I have been growing garlic for about ten years now...whenever friends ask me about 'how to', i may refer them to your video. There is nothing like growing your own garlic (and other foods). very clear and well put together video.
