Doesnt that sponge in the least chamber collect bad bacteria? Kinda like a regular F/W filter would? Seems like that would give an amonia spike or nitrate spike.
It's not quite an increase in flow so much as that the rush of water exiting the drain seems to make its way into the refugium section causing a bit of disturbance.
I'm trying to decide on removing filter socks from my sump area. Just as you stated they are a pain to deal with and what bothers me the most is that sometimes they'll fill up in two or three days and other times it'll fill up in less than a day. I'm trying to come up with a way to remove the socks however they do such a good job of tapping bubbles and also cutting the overall sumps water flow down. Without it I start to create a strong water current that tends to blow the sand in my refugium
@nujerzdrve1 I can relate to the filter socks issue you are having and removed mines for good. In time, the micro bubbles diminished somewhat and you can visit the rebuild process of this 90g tank from day 1 to see how I set mines up to somewhat lower the micro bubbles. Not too sure how it is that you have the flow disturbing the sand though. This should not be happening.
@timothylorenzini lol, I don't have any, but I was thinking to make a few with the same color, font, and wording as you see in the beginning intro "Saltwater & Reef Aquariums By Newyorksteelo :) If I do make some I will be sure to let you know.
@timothylorenzini I dont use one in there, simply because I seeded the refug below with good quality live rock but adding a couple of hermits & snails wont hurt as long as they wont clog the pumps.
@KOOLITUS I find it to be more structurally solid due to the use of thicker acrylic and the top eurobrace desing. Both will do the job but this one is slightly better.
Did you not get my video reply? Could really use your help with my sucking sump and fluctuating water level overflow box! I took the video for you! I think only the master Nysteelo can answer this question!
Dear NYS, Please Help!! i have been looking day and night for a website that will ship a 'trigger systems sump ruby36S but have found NONE. could you please point me in the right direction if possible??
@Champ19ns83 Best advice I can give you is to continue researching. I have no idea of a site that ships out there either buddy. If you do find one, please do let me know so that if any one else asks me this question, i can know the answer :)
@newyorksteelo ok mate will do! such a shame.. marine products over here are mediocre to say the least! keep up the good work my friend :) did you say in your video tha mag drive 9.5 is best for aquaC 180?? thanks for advise
Hi Steelo! Steelo I have a 75 gallon tank with drilled baukhead an overflow box from Marineland! I'm having a problem the overflow box will fill and dran fine for about 1 minute then a big suction noise and the water level in the weir/ovrflow box will go right down about 2 or 3 inches to where the standpipe bends an those holes are drilled! Then it fills up and runs fine for another minute or so. Could really use your help! Thanks..
@jcdeng Most don't, but the microscopic ones such as copepods and phytoplankton pass freely. I made a detailed video on this subject titled "HOB Refugium VS Refugium Below - Myths & Facts" where you might find the answers you seek. Good luck.
@cantstopdallas the extra bulk head is to run an external return pump like I did with this sump. It will come with the double 1inch drain no matter what. Hope this helps
@HANNIBAL6736 That is a great idea to use the extra bulkhead for that, but in most cases the double bulkhead is designed for larger tanks that always come with dual drains. But your idea is surely a great one. Thanks for sharing that :) I do have a question for you. Are you referring to this particular model (36s) or the Elite which comes with 3 bulkheads?
hey NYS, thanks for the great vids! my tank is very similar to yours and i wanted to buy this sump. I just wanted to know what size bulkhead you used because when ordering this product, they asked if i wanted an extra at 1 inch or an extra at 1.5 inch. Please let me know! Thanks!!
@cantstopdallas I use 1 inch bulkheads for mines because my 90g tank has 1 inch bulkheads as well. I think they asked you that because some tanks have larger bulkhead drains. You need to go by the size of your tanks bulkheads, not by the size of mines. Thanks for the feedback :)
@cantstopdallas I recommend you watch all my videos on the rebuild process as well as my tank review so you can know how it works before buying. Everything you need to know is found on my videos.
@newyorksteelo Thanks for helping me! Where did you put the extra bulkhead? ( i'm knew and i didnt want to make any mistakes. They are asking me ) and what if i only have one tube coming out of my tank? what should i do then?
Hey man first I'd like to say that your videos are awesome! I have learned so much. My question is do you have any ideas on a really good use for the drip section after the Refugium in your trigger sys sump. I have the same sump and want to put that section to really good use. Thanks again
@warrzone82 Inexpensive and this hobby just don't don't go together. In most cases, the cheaper the equipment is, the less it will deliver in performance. For a tank this size, I would go with the EV180 and mag drive 9.5 as the skimmers pump.
@warrzone82 You can go to each of their websites to get the dimensions of each and compare them to see if they fit. This is something you have to do with all skimmers and sumps. Good luck.
I know in your video you stated you were adding carbon to your sump to get the cycle going, but what do you use once the tank has cycled? Do you keep the carbon in or replace it with something else? I've got some bio balls but I'm not hearing great things about those. Thanks again for taking the time to do what you do! (pt 2)
@jtlooney24 Same thing buddy, carbon :) The carbon is held in place on the media stage of this sump so there is no need to have anything hold it in place. Bio balls are not needed if you already use at least 1 pound of live rock per gallon.
Hello. Just wanted to say THANKS for what you do! I'm in the process of setting up my first tank and your advise and videos have been a great help. I'm setting up a 75 gallon fowlr system but I would like to have as many fish as possible. On your recommedation I just bought the Trigger Systems Ruby 36S and I went with the Super Reef Octopus 1000 for my skimmer. (pt 1) .......
Iv never seen a person who replies in each of his own video!!!!!! Am amazed... Any way I just wanted to say great job and I created a utube account just to say that hehehe. And in like a month am going to be an aquastic.
@shilovending Yes you can. A sump is basically a separate reservoir that can help hide equipment from the main display. The refugium and protein skimmer part wont do much for you, but a sump in general would. Good luck.
I was wondering what size pipe do you have going from your sump? I can't seem to get my flex hose to fit the fittings on my bulkheads on my sump. I see you have an elbow type PVC on your bulkhead what size is that and I wanted to know where can I purchase the black tubing you have going from your return pump to your tank and what size is that if you don't mind. Also thanks for the videos and the advice.
@kingsean74 I forgot the size of the slip pipe but there is a small piece there that slides into the bulkhead and slides into the hose as well. I recommend you take both the bulkhead and hose to Home Depot and find what you need there. It's how I did it :)
I tried to that, but I get a gurgle sound. I'm thinking of adding a longer of flex hose and putting a loop in it and then run that into a piece of PVC with holes facing upward so that the water is spilling upward and not just being able to run straight down the drain in an almost fully free falling state and slamming into the water in the fuge. What you think of that? I can put up a video if you'd like to see.
@Th3mast3r69 The gurgling noises come from the overflow box and a Durso Stand Pipe will eliminate that. Eliminating kinks in the tubing and keeping the tubing as short as possible will help also. Making the tubing longer than it needs to be creates an up and down siphoning noise coming from the overflow. Have to use a DSP and make the tubing short to eliminate the noise.
Hey, I've just installed a custom fuge on my new 72 gallon bow. I'm just wondering if you know any techniques to make it so that when the water hits the fuge from the drain, it does it in a not so aggressive way to minimize splashing and microbubbles. Right now I've got a little LR in the first stage in front of the baffle which helped alot. I'm going to add more, but I still want to reduce the splashing from the drain if at all possible. Any input would be great man. Thanks
@Th3mast3r69 Add a piece of PVC so that the water goes in below the water line in the sump, and if it still splashes, add a filter sock. Do keep in mind that the filter sock needs to be cleaned every few days. Good luck.
@Springs24 Hmm, what format is the video on? YouTube only supports a few such as MPEG4, MOV Files, WMV and so on. If your video is say for example, AVCHD, YouTube wont accept it and the video needs to rendered to some of YouTubes accepted formats.
@newyorksteelo youtube can upload avchd. i upload avchd every time. if its the time limit issue you have to change your youtube settings from "youtuber" to director. then you can upload videos that are much longer :)
@TheKleinReef I can upload videos that are any size with no issues. I the problem is that YouTube does not accept AVCHD format, or at least it did not when I first got my Sony Camera. Are you sure it accepts AVCHD? I am going to have to research that cause it must be a new thing.
@newyorksteelo i'm positive it does. because when i upload new videos with my sony cybershot that records 1080p, it records it in avchd. and when i upload it to youtube it says 00052.avc
Thanks for your videos I am a big fan of the channel. I will be ordering my Trigger System Ruby 36" Sump for my 75 gallon set up, but I wanted to know what kind of light is a good one to use over the refugium?
Hey man i just got me ev 180 running and i had to elevate it just like you. I dont know if it is high enough. The water level is in the middle of the output. Does it have to be completely above the water line? Thanks
@tylercoakley14 Not exactly. Mines is also a bit in the middle of the output and works like a charm. So long as it is above the water level, it should work fine.
I have looked at the Triggersys sump. They said they have a 18x18inch sump/refug in stock (Which is the same setup as the 20x20). I have a 60gallon cube and in the stand i have 24x24 of room. I currently have a 25 gallon sump/refug from the LFS (none of this is setup btw, i have to move my old tanks contents to the new one). Will i get enough benefit out of a 18x18 sump/refug, will there be enough room for a good protein skimmer? The skimmer area looks like its 12x12 with one sock.
@thomaswhudson It's hard for me to give you a sure answer here without being there present to tell you if it will be a good idea. Only you can answer this question since this is your tank. One thing I do recommend is ti measure the inside of the stand well, including all the support beams so that you can go by the inside space of the stand available, instead of the outside dimension of the stand. Good luck.
you helped me out alot thanks. got my new system up and runnig finally. could you check out my videos please. thinking about buying fish and live rock off line whos the best sites for this. thanks alot.
@batty1955 Liveaquaria is one of the best online vendors for live stock and live rock. i will try my best to view some of your videos when I have the time. Your welcome.
Hi nysteelo. I am designing a DIY sump refugium. I like the opening between sump and fuge. How do u control water flow thru that? Or does it just work, no matter how many gph of water is coming into sump?? Thanks!
@reeffan The flow through rate through the sump is basically determined by the return pump and bulk heads on the built in overflow box bulkheads. Each drain from the overflow box is designed to handle in upwards to 1000 gph each. I have 2 and so use a mag drive 18 for the return. The sum itself is able to handle any speed I offer it so the opening on the first stage wont matter much when it comes to flow based on the current design. Thanks for watching.
Nice videos, very informative. I want to build my own sump from a 40g breeder and was wondering if you could please give me a couple of measurements on your trigger sump. How high is the slit on the first divider where the water flows into the refugium. And, how much space between the two dividers for your chemi pure? Thanks a lot and keep those videos coming.
@roadhogtri You can visit the Trigger Systems website to get all the dimensions of these sumps. They have quite a few. The spaces in-between the dividers where the media goes in approximately 2 to 2.5 inches. Good luck.
regarding the last comment, I did not see the answer, how does your water drain from your main tank is it just gravity. or pumped, thanks alot. great vid.
@rats4611 Its both gravity and the pump below pumping water into the tank, casing the tank to fill up with more water, overflowing the water into the overflow box and back down to the sump. Thanks for the compliment.
@newyorksteelo thanks for the reply, one more question please, the one thing I dont understand is in the event of a power failure does the system/siponing start up with no issues, or does it need to be primed again.do you need check valves installed.? thanks
@rats4611 None of the above. As soon as the pump gets power again, the pump will start again and shoot water up from the sump to the main display and the process starts all over. Check valves are not needed because the oveflow box only drains water from the surface of the tank. Once the pump below loses power, a mere 2 to 3 gallons are drained from the surface and once the water drains below the overflow box's surface, everything stops. Its common sense buddy :)
@rats4611 Also, I recommend you watch my other video titled "Reef Aquarium Tech Tank Review" to learn a little more about how reef ready overflow boxes work. I discuss that in detail there. As a matter of fact, I recommend you watch all my videos to learn more about the entire hobby before you get into it. I cover everything from equipment reviews, to building a 30g nano, to building this 90g system, educational videos, advice and more. Don't forget to give my videos a thumbs up :)
oh wow this is the system you told me about i like it and it looks so easy to make with acrylic how much is a sump like this worth...you dont ha to tell me if you dont want but i like it a lot i just got a use 75 gallon tank with stand, as im typing im doing the vinegar and bleach to it thanks to you my friend...
@reefman46 The standard 36 inch model is $300 bucks give or take. Research this sump well online and you may even find it cheaper :) Good luck and thanks for watching.
Hi , watched all your vids , the are sheer quality , great info , I have 2 questions if you have time to answer any would be great , 1. How many lph does the drain from you main tank to sump , also how does it drain , is it gravity or pumped, 2. Does your skimmer output drain directly into the first chamber , i would love to buy one of these if only someone in uk made them , cheers great videos
@jacklad99 Not exactly sure about liters per hours, but I can tell you in gallons per hour. I use a mag drive 18 pump which runs at 1,800 gallons per hour but by the time the water travels up through the plumbing and into the tank, there is some back-pressure flow lost so I would estimate it at about 1,400 gph flow through rate. The skimmer does drain right back into the first stage. I would try and email them to see if they ship all the way out there. Good luck.
ok, i want to set up a Reef tank with some clown and seahorses.
Please let me know WHAT ARE THE MUST HAVE ITEMS. how they work, and aprox cost of those items. Please get back to me, i want to start on a 10 gal that i have.
@OandD4ever Everything you need to know is found on my videos buddy, from how to set up a nano system, to how to setup a 90g reef, to equipment reviews, all the way up to educational videos on water chemistry. Its all there buddy :)
@SuperLefkowitz You can out the heater anywhere you wish to as long as it fits. I recommend you research the over all length of the heater, and the compartments of your sump to ensure it will fit. Good luck.
So u would recommend two drains I take it. Right now my new 90 gallon only has one. Is it easy to add another one. "90 gallon is not set up just yet, still buying components".
@brinks128 I recommend more water flow, especially if the tank is a large. In your case, since your 90g tank only has 1 drain, you are stuck using only 1 drain. Please watch my video "90G Tech Tank Review" to find more info on my tanks specifications and info. Good luck.
@newyorksteelo im sorry i was explaining it wrong... the overflow is on the left side of the tank....okay the question is... could i add another overflow on the right side of the tank?
@Crazycajun985 Absolutely. I had it custom build to 39 inches for the purpose of the skimmer and because it would of fit perfectly under the stand, but the 36 inch model would work fine :)
@newyorksteelo im kinda 50/50 i called them and asked to modify it to make it 18 inches instead of 17 inches in height so it could hold about 3-4 gallons more water im kinda afraid the 36s wont hold all the overflow water if the system has a power failure..just my opinion..its 380 for a custom one i just ordered one..thanks for this vid steelo i like the proflex but i think the trig sys sumkp is better i like the skimmer in the 1st stage
@shakez1 An inch in height will barely hold a gallon at max. You have to understand that this sumps water level is 10 inches tall and the rest is designed to prevent spills when you shut off the system. Mines more than hold 2 times my systems water drainage when it shuts off. You did not do the custom part to it as the 36 s will more than do the job for even a 125g system. You will however love this sump big time :)
@newyorksteelo you really have a good point the water level is10inches which leaves enough room for overflow.do you think the refugium will be big enough and effective for a 150 gallon.i saw a vid the guy said he doesnt rec.using sand or miracle mud.i disagree i plan on using miracle mud in the first stage, sand, live rock, in the second and chemi pure elite.is your system running like this?i think if the refugium is not that effective becuz of a bigger tank,
@shakez1 The skimmer should be in the first stage, and all other refugium contents in the second stage such as sand, miracle mud, chaeto some live rock rubble and the such. Last stage should be for the return pump and added filtration you wish to incorporate. I think this size refugium is decent for a 150g tank but I would of gone longer than 36 inches, but then again, that's just me. The bigger the sump refugium, the better.
What skimmer do you suggest for a 90g with heavy bio-load ???? I have a bubble magus 150 rated for a 80g .....it was good for my 55g. But let's face it my 90g is to much :-/
Hey steelo I was just wondering when u order this sump do you just e-mail trigger system and get them the information that u want and they just response you back with price and pay over the phone? I'm trying to order the 30s that just including one drain intake and custom a 1 inch bulkhead for my return pump and I just afraid they might not drill the hole where i wanted them to. Do trigger system has a # that I can call it might work better with detail. Thanks buddy.
I wanted to get a sump system for my 150 gallon aquarium. But when i went to a fish store to ask how much. They said I'd have to be willing to spend $600. I said fuck that. So i just bought my self 2 Aqua Clear 110 Filters for my 150 gal. they where 60 bucks each one
@DgosFinnest $600 dollars, damn what the heck are they trying to sell you, a tech tank or a sump lol. They probably told you this cause they do not carry sumps, and I bet that they wanted you to get discouraged and buy something else that is readily available in the store. They think they are slick. Next time, please go online. I payed $380 for my Trigger Systems shipped, and this is cause I had it custom built. Their 36" model online is barely $300. This is why I hate LFS's. Good luck.
@newyorksteelo Nope They wanted to sell me a Sump System. They said it would be so expensive because of all the plumbing. Which confuses me because I thought that The Plumbing was Cheap compared to the Actual System it's self. And I told the Guy. Dude Ill spend $300 dollars max. He said, nope you have to spend double that amount. So I just walked out, very dissapointed. U see my aquarium is actually built for a sump system, with overflow box, and 3 holes drilled at da bottom.
@DgosFinnest@DgosFinnest I thought you meant the sump alone. In this case, I would have to agree with them because you will need a return pump and skimmer. This might be what they referred to as "plumbing", and this is a large 150 gallon system requiring a relatively large return pump. I will do a full video on total system cost for my 90g in the near future. Stay tuned :)
Hi steelo, I bought the cristal 30 sump from trigger systems after this video this sump is runing my 130 Gal. aquarium I bought this sump size due to lack of space under the display tank its a half cylinder (48"L X 24"W X 30"H) and its working OK with my Aqua C ev 120 skimmer that runs a Mag 5 and my return pump is a Mag 12 but my question is that I'm noticing a film on top of the sump water were the return pump it's located. is this normal ?
@ctapia79 I would advise you to run the EV120 with a mag 7 as opposed to a mag 5. This skimmer really performs well when adding a slightly larger pump. The scum on the surface is most likely excess nutrients and undissolved organics, which is what a protein skimmer removes. In order for the skimmer to remove it, the scum must be delivered to the skimmer via water movement. Sounds like this area is stagnant on the surface. I would add a small pump to this stage and call it a day :)
Thank you so much or all your time you put into these videos. I've had this dream to have a reef aquarium ever since i was a little girl but i always thought it was too complicated for me to ever own one. Your videos helped me all through my planing period and I'm that much closer to realizing my dream. I appreciate you! God bless
@suebugsbooo Awesome. Welcome to the hobby. All you need is found on my videos but if ever you are unsure of something, I am here to help out. Good luck and keep me posted on the progress of your dream built :)
Hey steelo are you willing to share the exact specs of your custom sump? I have basically the same equ. You do and I'm sure other people are wondering as well :p
Yea I want a couple easy corals that why I am upgrading to a 120 in a couple months my 55 is completely different now but haven't been able to post yet cause supper busy keep up good work man we need a lot more people like u in this hobby
@aubel07 Thanks, you have a nice fowlr tank as well. Much easier to keep than reefs. I think my next set up is going to be a flowlr tank. I may upgrade the 30g nano and get another 90g fowlr. This way, I can document the process and have 2 systems. My 90 flowr would be packed though with a Clown Trigger and Lion Fish. My brother was into the hobby before me and he had a flowlr tank for years. Had a grouper that grew 3 feet and every fish had to be given away. They grow huge. "Predators"
@aubel07 It will all depend on how you plan to set it up and what equipment you will use. In my case, 39 inches was all I needed, but if you plan on adding different equipment, or setting it up differently, make sure you have those dimensions exact. Also consider the 2 drain holes and the position of your skimmer. What I had to worry about most was being able to insert the sump to the stand. I realized that by removing the doors, I can fit 39 inches exactly so thats what i went with. Good luck.
@ctapia79 A friend of mine owns a local fish store and got it for me wholesale price. Do some research online as there are many that sell it and for a good price too.
Since this video is about sump/refugium, I wanted to ask a question about mine. Things are going very well with mine but if I turn on the sump light after it has been dark for a while, there are TONS of little clear to light tan shrimp looking animals swiming in the sump and living in the cheato! They vary in size and some can be quite large in comparison. Are these animals benificial? If not how do I get rid of them? There is even one or two swimming around in my reactors.
@wesleyforbes These are most likely beneficial and great scavengers to have in your refugium. I would be more worried about not seeing any life in the refuge when you turn on the lights. Keep up the good work.
If a ruby 36s holds 33 gal and return pump fails says on vac, won't the sump overflow cause no control on intake tubes ? A ball valve or is it recommended to use a water pump to control the intake into stage 1 ?
@kmeister19 All reef aquariums that are reef ready with built in overflow only drain like 5 gallons into the sump in the event of a pump failing or power outage. The Ruby 36s holds 33 gallons total but the water in the sump when operating is less than 20 gallons give or take. You are reading too much into this my friend. If you buy quality, you better believe that what ever you can think that can go wrong, has already been thought of and corrected. If my pump fails, I will never get a spill.
@kmeister19 Also, for your other question, you can use a ball valve but why do that if you can just buy the pump with a specific amount of flow to determine the flow coming into the sump. It is recommended that you have at least a 10 times the tanks volume turn over rate through the sump. So if you have a 90g tank, the flow through the sump should be 900 gallons per hour minimum. you would need a mag drive 12 to achieve this flow.
@kmeister19 Good to hear. You are definitely making a wise decision here by skipping the wet dry filter and instead getting a sump refugium. Glad to be of some help.
new to sump concept, want 90gal tank, how are the 2 intake PVC to sump powered - water pump, if not is it recommended or just use a ball valve...also can u post the site for the stand and tank as the overflow and height space of 32" difficult to find
@kmeister19 Gravity, no pump needed to drain water to the sump. You do however need a pump to pump water back up into the main display, the water then gravity drains back to the sump as it fills the main display. Go to the Aqueon web site and take a look at their different stands and tanks. They have stands that are 32 inches tall and tanks with build in overfollows. My tank and stand are no longer manufactured by oceanic. good luck.
@newyorksteelo for me there is.. I'm using a super reef octopus xp2000 and it's very finicky with water level. The 3rd section of the aqueon will fluctuate too much for me even with auto top off
Doesnt that sponge in the least chamber collect bad bacteria? Kinda like a regular F/W filter would? Seems like that would give an amonia spike or nitrate spike.
paully069 4 hours ago
@paully069 Yes, very much so, but that's why I clean and rise it out every week with freshwater.
newyorksteelo 3 hours ago
It's not quite an increase in flow so much as that the rush of water exiting the drain seems to make its way into the refugium section causing a bit of disturbance.

I'm trying to decide on removing filter socks from my sump area. Just as you stated they are a pain to deal with and what bothers me the most is that sometimes they'll fill up in two or three days and other times it'll fill up in less than a day. I'm trying to come up with a way to remove the socks however they do such a good job of tapping bubbles and also cutting the overall sumps water flow down. Without it I start to create a strong water current that tends to blow the sand in my refugium
nujerzdrve1 1 week ago
@nujerzdrve1 I can relate to the filter socks issue you are having and removed mines for good. In time, the micro bubbles diminished somewhat and you can visit the rebuild process of this 90g tank from day 1 to see how I set mines up to somewhat lower the micro bubbles. Not too sure how it is that you have the flow disturbing the sand though. This should not be happening.

@timothylorenzini lol, I don't have any, but I was thinking to make a few with the same color, font, and wording as you see in the beginning intro "Saltwater & Reef Aquariums By Newyorksteelo :) If I do make some I will be sure to let you know.
newyorksteelo 1 week ago
Do i need a cleanup crew in my refugium?
timothylorenzini 1 week ago
@timothylorenzini I dont use one in there, simply because I seeded the refug below with good quality live rock but adding a couple of hermits & snails wont hurt as long as they wont clog the pumps.

is this refugium better than the aqueon sump you had before?
KOOLITUS 2 weeks ago
@KOOLITUS I find it to be more structurally solid due to the use of thicker acrylic and the top eurobrace desing. Both will do the job but this one is slightly better.

@Champ19ns83 Yes. I have found the the EV180 works best with the mag 9.5. Good luck.

Thanks..
Sisco296 3 weeks ago
@Sisco296 I have no clue exactly what you mean? Are you using a Durso Standpipe, and have you tried adding more water to the sump?
newyorksteelo 3 weeks ago
Love the set up. I have just obtained a used 125 gallon aquarium. Can you recommend a good pump with a 125 and this trigger system?
Khloe04Men 1 month ago
@Khloe04Men Look into the mag drive pumps. They are durable, quiet and very reliable. Good luck.

how are the pods going to past the foam???
jcdeng 1 month ago
@jcdeng Most don't, but the microscopic ones such as copepods and phytoplankton pass freely. I made a detailed video on this subject titled "HOB Refugium VS Refugium Below - Myths & Facts" where you might find the answers you seek. Good luck.

@cantstopdallas the extra bulk head is to run an external return pump like I did with this sump. It will come with the double 1inch drain no matter what. Hope this helps
HANNIBAL6736 1 month ago
@HANNIBAL6736 That is a great idea to use the extra bulkhead for that, but in most cases the double bulkhead is designed for larger tanks that always come with dual drains. But your idea is surely a great one. Thanks for sharing that :) I do have a question for you. Are you referring to this particular model (36s) or the Elite which comes with 3 bulkheads?
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
hey NYS, thanks for the great vids! my tank is very similar to yours and i wanted to buy this sump. I just wanted to know what size bulkhead you used because when ordering this product, they asked if i wanted an extra at 1 inch or an extra at 1.5 inch. Please let me know! Thanks!!
cantstopdallas 1 month ago
@cantstopdallas I use 1 inch bulkheads for mines because my 90g tank has 1 inch bulkheads as well. I think they asked you that because some tanks have larger bulkhead drains. You need to go by the size of your tanks bulkheads, not by the size of mines. Thanks for the feedback :)
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@newyorksteelo Thanks for helping me! Where did you put the extra bulkhead? ( i'm knew and i didnt want to make any mistakes. They are asking me )
cantstopdallas 1 month ago
@cantstopdallas My tank has 2 bulkheads, and so does the sump. I used both of them and kept the same design as the 36s

Hey man first I'd like to say that your videos are awesome! I have learned so much. My question is do you have any ideas on a really good use for the drip section after the Refugium in your trigger sys sump. I have the same sump and want to put that section to really good use. Thanks again

Hey NYS
I plan on getting this sump for my 72 Bowfront.....what skimmer would you recommend in the
$200 price range that would work? What pump would you recommend?
warrzone82 1 month ago
@warrzone82 Inexpensive and this hobby just don't don't go together. In most cases, the cheaper the equipment is, the less it will deliver in performance. For a tank this size, I would go with the EV180 and mag drive 9.5 as the skimmers pump.
newyorksteelo 1 month ago
@newyorksteelo
Thanks for the reply! that skimmer will easily fit inside the 1st stage of the trigger 36s?
warrzone82 1 month ago
@warrzone82 You can go to each of their websites to get the dimensions of each and compare them to see if they fit. This is something you have to do with all skimmers and sumps. Good luck.

I know in your video you stated you were adding carbon to your sump to get the cycle going, but what do you use once the tank has cycled? Do you keep the carbon in or replace it with something else? I've got some bio balls but I'm not hearing great things about those. Thanks again for taking the time to do what you do! (pt 2)
jtlooney24 1 month ago
@jtlooney24 Same thing buddy, carbon :) The carbon is held in place on the media stage of this sump so there is no need to have anything hold it in place. Bio balls are not needed if you already use at least 1 pound of live rock per gallon.

Hi, i hope your doing well. Could i use a sump on a freash water 90 gal tank.
shilovending 2 months ago
@shilovending Yes you can. A sump is basically a separate reservoir that can help hide equipment from the main display. The refugium and protein skimmer part wont do much for you, but a sump in general would. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 2 months ago
I was wondering what size pipe do you have going from your sump? I can't seem to get my flex hose to fit the fittings on my bulkheads on my sump. I see you have an elbow type PVC on your bulkhead what size is that and I wanted to know where can I purchase the black tubing you have going from your return pump to your tank and what size is that if you don't mind. Also thanks for the videos and the advice.
kingsean74 2 months ago
@kingsean74 I forgot the size of the slip pipe but there is a small piece there that slides into the bulkhead and slides into the hose as well. I recommend you take both the bulkhead and hose to Home Depot and find what you need there. It's how I did it :)
newyorksteelo 2 months ago
I tried to that, but I get a gurgle sound. I'm thinking of adding a longer of flex hose and putting a loop in it and then run that into a piece of PVC with holes facing upward so that the water is spilling upward and not just being able to run straight down the drain in an almost fully free falling state and slamming into the water in the fuge. What you think of that? I can put up a video if you'd like to see.
Th3mast3r69 2 months ago
@Th3mast3r69 The gurgling noises come from the overflow box and a Durso Stand Pipe will eliminate that. Eliminating kinks in the tubing and keeping the tubing as short as possible will help also. Making the tubing longer than it needs to be creates an up and down siphoning noise coming from the overflow. Have to use a DSP and make the tubing short to eliminate the noise.
newyorksteelo 2 months ago
Hey, I've just installed a custom fuge on my new 72 gallon bow. I'm just wondering if you know any techniques to make it so that when the water hits the fuge from the drain, it does it in a not so aggressive way to minimize splashing and microbubbles. Right now I've got a little LR in the first stage in front of the baffle which helped alot. I'm going to add more, but I still want to reduce the splashing from the drain if at all possible. Any input would be great man. Thanks
Th3mast3r69 2 months ago
@Th3mast3r69 Add a piece of PVC so that the water goes in below the water line in the sump, and if it still splashes, add a filter sock. Do keep in mind that the filter sock needs to be cleaned every few days. Good luck.

Springs24 3 months ago
@Springs24 Hmm, what format is the video on? YouTube only supports a few such as MPEG4, MOV Files, WMV and so on. If your video is say for example, AVCHD, YouTube wont accept it and the video needs to rendered to some of YouTubes accepted formats.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
@newyorksteelo youtube can upload avchd. i upload avchd every time. if its the time limit issue you have to change your youtube settings from "youtuber" to director. then you can upload videos that are much longer :)

@TheKleinReef I can upload videos that are any size with no issues. I the problem is that YouTube does not accept AVCHD format, or at least it did not when I first got my Sony Camera. Are you sure it accepts AVCHD? I am going to have to research that cause it must be a new thing.

The skimmer area looks like its 12x12 with one sock.
thomaswhudson 3 months ago
@thomaswhudson It's hard for me to give you a sure answer here without being there present to tell you if it will be a good idea. Only you can answer this question since this is your tank. One thing I do recommend is ti measure the inside of the stand well, including all the support beams so that you can go by the inside space of the stand available, instead of the outside dimension of the stand. Good luck.

Hi nysteelo. I am designing a DIY sump refugium. I like the opening between sump and fuge. How do u control water flow thru that? Or does it just work, no matter how many gph of water is coming into sump?? Thanks!
reeffan 3 months ago
@reeffan The flow through rate through the sump is basically determined by the return pump and bulk heads on the built in overflow box bulkheads. Each drain from the overflow box is designed to handle in upwards to 1000 gph each. I have 2 and so use a mag drive 18 for the return. The sum itself is able to handle any speed I offer it so the opening on the first stage wont matter much when it comes to flow based on the current design. Thanks for watching.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
Nice videos, very informative. I want to build my own sump from a 40g breeder and was wondering if you could please give me a couple of measurements on your trigger sump. How high is the slit on the first divider where the water flows into the refugium. And, how much space between the two dividers for your chemi pure? Thanks a lot and keep those videos coming.
roadhogtri 3 months ago
@roadhogtri You can visit the Trigger Systems website to get all the dimensions of these sumps. They have quite a few. The spaces in-between the dividers where the media goes in approximately 2 to 2.5 inches. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 3 months ago
regarding the last comment, I did not see the answer, how does your water drain from your main tank is it just gravity. or pumped, thanks alot. great vid.
rats4611 4 months ago
@rats4611 Its both gravity and the pump below pumping water into the tank, casing the tank to fill up with more water, overflowing the water into the overflow box and back down to the sump. Thanks for the compliment.
newyorksteelo 4 months ago
@newyorksteelo thanks for the reply, one more question please, the one thing I dont understand is in the event of a power failure does the system/siponing start up with no issues, or does it need to be primed again.do you need check valves installed.? thanks
rats4611 4 months ago
@rats4611 None of the above. As soon as the pump gets power again, the pump will start again and shoot water up from the sump to the main display and the process starts all over. Check valves are not needed because the oveflow box only drains water from the surface of the tank. Once the pump below loses power, a mere 2 to 3 gallons are drained from the surface and once the water drains below the overflow box's surface, everything stops. Its common sense buddy :)

Hi , watched all your vids , the are sheer quality , great info , I have 2 questions if you have time to answer any would be great , 1. How many lph does the drain from you main tank to sump , also how does it drain , is it gravity or pumped, 2. Does your skimmer output drain directly into the first chamber , i would love to buy one of these if only someone in uk made them , cheers great videos
jacklad99 4 months ago
@jacklad99 Not exactly sure about liters per hours, but I can tell you in gallons per hour. I use a mag drive 18 pump which runs at 1,800 gallons per hour but by the time the water travels up through the plumbing and into the tank, there is some back-pressure flow lost so I would estimate it at about 1,400 gph flow through rate. The skimmer does drain right back into the first stage. I would try and email them to see if they ship all the way out there. Good luck.

So u would recommend two drains I take it. Right now my new 90 gallon only has one. Is it easy to add another one. "90 gallon is not set up just yet, still buying components".
brinks128 6 months ago
@brinks128 I recommend more water flow, especially if the tank is a large. In your case, since your 90g tank only has 1 drain, you are stuck using only 1 drain. Please watch my video "90G Tech Tank Review" to find more info on my tanks specifications and info. Good luck.

Do you think the 36s would be enough of refugium for a 150 gallon tank?
Crazycajun985 7 months ago
@Crazycajun985 Absolutely. I had it custom build to 39 inches for the purpose of the skimmer and because it would of fit perfectly under the stand, but the 36 inch model would work fine :)
newyorksteelo 7 months ago
@newyorksteelo im kinda 50/50 i called them and asked to modify it to make it 18 inches instead of 17 inches in height so it could hold about 3-4 gallons more water im kinda afraid the 36s wont hold all the overflow water if the system has a power failure..just my opinion..its 380 for a custom one i just ordered one..thanks for this vid steelo i like the proflex but i think the trig sys sumkp is better i like the skimmer in the 1st stage
shakez1 7 months ago
@shakez1 An inch in height will barely hold a gallon at max. You have to understand that this sumps water level is 10 inches tall and the rest is designed to prevent spills when you shut off the system. Mines more than hold 2 times my systems water drainage when it shuts off. You did not do the custom part to it as the 36 s will more than do the job for even a 125g system. You will however love this sump big time :)
newyorksteelo 7 months ago
@newyorksteelo you really have a good point the water level is10inches which leaves enough room for overflow.do you think the refugium will be big enough and effective for a 150 gallon.i saw a vid the guy said he doesnt rec.using sand or miracle mud.i disagree i plan on using miracle mud in the first stage, sand, live rock, in the second and chemi pure elite.is your system running like this?i think if the refugium is not that effective becuz of a bigger tank,
shakez1 7 months ago
@shakez1 The skimmer should be in the first stage, and all other refugium contents in the second stage such as sand, miracle mud, chaeto some live rock rubble and the such. Last stage should be for the return pump and added filtration you wish to incorporate. I think this size refugium is decent for a 150g tank but I would of gone longer than 36 inches, but then again, that's just me. The bigger the sump refugium, the better.
newyorksteelo 7 months ago
@newyorksteelo sand, miracle mud, and chemi pure would help this prob right?!
shakez1 7 months ago

DgosFinnest 9 months ago
@DgosFinnest $600 dollars, damn what the heck are they trying to sell you, a tech tank or a sump lol. They probably told you this cause they do not carry sumps, and I bet that they wanted you to get discouraged and buy something else that is readily available in the store. They think they are slick. Next time, please go online. I payed $380 for my Trigger Systems shipped, and this is cause I had it custom built. Their 36" model online is barely $300. This is why I hate LFS's. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 9 months ago
@newyorksteelo Nope They wanted to sell me a Sump System. They said it would be so expensive because of all the plumbing. Which confuses me because I thought that The Plumbing was Cheap compared to the Actual System it's self. And I told the Guy. Dude Ill spend $300 dollars max. He said, nope you have to spend double that amount. So I just walked out, very dissapointed. U see my aquarium is actually built for a sump system, with overflow box, and 3 holes drilled at da bottom.
DgosFinnest 9 months ago
@DgosFinnest @DgosFinnest I thought you meant the sump alone. In this case, I would have to agree with them because you will need a return pump and skimmer. This might be what they referred to as "plumbing", and this is a large 150 gallon system requiring a relatively large return pump. I will do a full video on total system cost for my 90g in the near future. Stay tuned :)
newyorksteelo 9 months ago
Hi steelo, I bought the cristal 30 sump from trigger systems after this video this sump is runing my 130 Gal. aquarium I bought this sump size due to lack of space under the display tank its a half cylinder (48"L X 24"W X 30"H) and its working OK with my Aqua C ev 120 skimmer that runs a Mag 5 and my return pump is a Mag 12 but my question is that I'm noticing a film on top of the sump water were the return pump it's located. is this normal ?
Thanks and keep those videos coming there great
ctapia79 9 months ago
@ctapia79 I would advise you to run the EV120 with a mag 7 as opposed to a mag 5. This skimmer really performs well when adding a slightly larger pump. The scum on the surface is most likely excess nutrients and undissolved organics, which is what a protein skimmer removes. In order for the skimmer to remove it, the scum must be delivered to the skimmer via water movement. Sounds like this area is stagnant on the surface. I would add a small pump to this stage and call it a day :)

Ok cool thx ur 90 is looking good
aubel07 11 months ago
@aubel07 Thanks, you have a nice fowlr tank as well. Much easier to keep than reefs. I think my next set up is going to be a flowlr tank. I may upgrade the 30g nano and get another 90g fowlr. This way, I can document the process and have 2 systems. My 90 flowr would be packed though with a Clown Trigger and Lion Fish. My brother was into the hobby before me and he had a flowlr tank for years. Had a grouper that grew 3 feet and every fish had to be given away. They grow huge. "Predators"

Ok thank u because trigger systems said that it was 39 and 3/4. So I will ask them to make whole system 39 exactly with dividers
aubel07 11 months ago
@aubel07 It will all depend on how you plan to set it up and what equipment you will use. In my case, 39 inches was all I needed, but if you plan on adding different equipment, or setting it up differently, make sure you have those dimensions exact. Also consider the 2 drain holes and the position of your skimmer. What I had to worry about most was being able to insert the sump to the stand. I realized that by removing the doors, I can fit 39 inches exactly so thats what i went with. Good luck.

Is the dimensions including the 1/4 inch dividers or not including. Making the system 39 and 1/2
aubel07 11 months ago
@aubel07 From one end to the other end it is exactly 39 inches.

There is even one or two swimming around in my reactors.
wesleyforbes 1 year ago
@wesleyforbes These are most likely beneficial and great scavengers to have in your refugium. I would be more worried about not seeing any life in the refuge when you turn on the lights. Keep up the good work.

@newyorksteelo Found out they are amphipods and are beneficial as they feed on detritus.

@wesleyforbes Sounds good.

If a ruby 36s holds 33 gal and return pump fails says on vac, won't the sump overflow cause no control on intake tubes ? A ball valve or is it recommended to use a water pump to control the intake into stage 1 ?
kmeister19 1 year ago
@kmeister19 All reef aquariums that are reef ready with built in overflow only drain like 5 gallons into the sump in the event of a pump failing or power outage. The Ruby 36s holds 33 gallons total but the water in the sump when operating is less than 20 gallons give or take. You are reading too much into this my friend. If you buy quality, you better believe that what ever you can think that can go wrong, has already been thought of and corrected. If my pump fails, I will never get a spill.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
@kmeister19 Also, for your other question, you can use a ball valve but why do that if you can just buy the pump with a specific amount of flow to determine the flow coming into the sump. It is recommended that you have at least a 10 times the tanks volume turn over rate through the sump. So if you have a 90g tank, the flow through the sump should be 900 gallons per hour minimum. you would need a mag drive 12 to achieve this flow.

Without ur video, would have gotten the bio balls refugium per local store. Will go with ruby 36s if possible
kmeister19 1 year ago
@kmeister19 Good to hear. You are definitely making a wise decision here by skipping the wet dry filter and instead getting a sump refugium. Glad to be of some help.

new to sump concept, want 90gal tank, how are the 2 intake PVC to sump powered - water pump, if not is it recommended or just use a ball valve...also can u post the site for the stand and tank as the overflow and height space of 32" difficult to find
kmeister19 1 year ago
@kmeister19 Gravity, no pump needed to drain water to the sump. You do however need a pump to pump water back up into the main display, the water then gravity drains back to the sump as it fills the main display. Go to the Aqueon web site and take a look at their different stands and tanks. They have stands that are 32 inches tall and tanks with build in overfollows. My tank and stand are no longer manufactured by oceanic. good luck.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
@newyorksteelo for me there is.. I'm using a super reef octopus xp2000 and it's very finicky with water level. The 3rd section of the aqueon will fluctuate too much for me even with auto top off
