@exath1, it is...with force. The undercurrent energy of water movement was really a challenge in this one. I'm going to be curious once again what the impact the thermal layer at the equator is on the energy of the current as it crosses that boundary. Seems to be a lot of these things in recent years.
Whattt? Sorry, but I don't smoke. This guy definitely does though. Pressing from both "ends" of the earth causing earthquakes? Whodawhatyousaying? Density? Ice melting? Earth retracting? My only question is what he's smoking? I'll make sure everyone I know avoids it. Keep wondering Dude and some of it will make sense to YOU tomorrow. (NOT) If anyone remembers this tomorrow you are doomed. He actually said, "You heard it here first." I guess tomorrow's topic will be flying turtles.
What does smoking have to do with any of this? As for the effects of the ice. It had enough of an impact to push northern continents into the earth's crust. Yes, they carry a lot of weight...just not as much as before. The earth is not shaped like a ball as you probably think. It's shaped oblong due to spin and the weight of ice on both sides "possibly" has a role as gravity is strongest on both ends where the spin of the earth is not as fast as it is around the equator.
You just want a copy of that drawing of the monkey behind me. And I have seen a turtle fly before when I was a kid, because a neighbor girl ran out of rocks to throw at me.
Ernestomiguel, hope things are well. I'll check out the video. I think the U.S. is already mobilizing to get help there. We have a lot of medical professionals whose only problem is attaching to an organization so that they may get there in a timely manner. I wish you wellness and safety.
I thought it was exactly what you explained that would cause the tsunami not to happen.
The displaced volume of water travels toward a land mass, which is above the water surface due to an increase in the elevation of the earth, as the water moves upward over the land surface the speed of the energy wave is so fast that the water rides up over the surface of the land. The more energy and increase in elevation the higher the wave.
i hope you don't mind me answering your questions lol, its energy transference the creates a tsunami as the world shake the displacements comes from forces that transferred to land through water, now tsunamis are created when there is more than one energy resisting the other that creates the wave, as long as the force is not being spread widely the more likely tsunamis show, if hawaii is closer to chile, it would have been deadly, but likely the forces spread as more distance were covered
If the ice caps are melting because of climate change as you stated, would that not add to the volume of flowing water in the oceans causing an increase in depth?
You speak of thermal expansion of water as to the reason the ocean depth has increased causing the loss of earth land surface, (the islands in the Pacific), and that this heating of the ocean is not do to climate change.
So I have a couple questions...
1. What in your opinion is causing the heating of the oceans?
2. You stated that possibly the loss of the ice caps could be creating enough stress on the planet to cause earthquakes. What do you think is causing the loss of ice?
there are many factors that affects the thermal condition of the planet, first is outer influence such as the the sun and atmosphere and second is internal activities, if its not from a climate change, it is most likely beneath the surface thats causing the thermal conditions,we humans are just used to the earth being "stable", which it never is, in fact what's going on is kind of like as we have seasons, our planet is changing its current state to a different one
@cutefappy What you are explaining is climate change. All the factors you list, among others, are the reason we have climate change. The climate of earth is ever changing. It is not new.
The spin of the Earth is NOT 24,000 Miles per hour. It's 1 evolution per day. So... at the Equator, it's approximately 25,000 miles per day, or, 1041 miles per hour.
Yes, you are absolutely right. I was thinking of the circumference of the eath which is approx. 25,000 miles at the equator. This is so obvious but I sailed right over a simple fact. Thanks actually.
She will be vlogging in hologram probably. Actually, you've given me an idea for a video of me being overly serious training her to vlog like one of the pageant moms. lol
Depends on what is going on in the world at any particular moment and my awareness of it. If something crazy is happening, then I have to shift states of mind to keep up.
you totally have missed the reason of how and why tsunamis are formed.
it wont matter so much about the body of water it has traveled through...its the amount of water displaced at the epicenter vs the shore that that displacement ends up at vs the spread gained by that distance (path the displacement is forced to travel)..
well now its coming to hawaii again good luck....

I can agree with that, (as a theory ) anyhow.
Also waves lose momentum due to resistance along the way anyhow. I used to see it every day in front of my Cabin.
Ferries would go by, way off shore, but the wave at the cabin was definitely smaller.

@cutefappy Newtons Laws first and second both apply to a tsunami. Which is what you are saying so you are absolutely correct.

The circumference of the earth's orbit (C) using 2piR, where R is the mean radius. This gives us
C ~ 300pi million km
for the total distance traveled in one year. One can calculate the number of seconds in a year by
T = 365 days/year *24 hours/day*60 minutes/hour*60 seconds/minute
This is very close to 10pi million seconds (within 0.3%). The mean speed is then given by:
V = C/T ~ 29.783 kms = 18.506 mps = 66623 mph
