Aah the Bull Green area of my birth town. I know it well. Hasn't really changed much except all the pubs round there now...and the takeaway wrappers...and the chavs...and the broken glass on a Sunday morn...and the sick on a Sunday morn!! Other than that...hey...
Ah lovely,No scum, litter, track suits, fat women on mobiles pushing prams,no Aldi,Lidl,Tesco etc..Kebab shops,KFC,Mc donalds..To late to get the country back to splendor, just got these lovely movies to remind us of a great country this once was...Thank you for the post.
It was the 60's. The New Victoria was called Victoria Hall until 1960 when it was refurbished and renamed. It later became the Halifax Civic Theatre in 1973 and changed back to The Victoria Theatre in 1993.The cinema was the Regal purpose built in 1938, which later became ABC in 1961 and closed in 2002
You can date the film by the John Wayne movie "El Dorado" at the cinema. A friend of my father took some cine around the same time, he was called Pete Greenway.
I worked in halifax in the late eighties to early nineties as a joiner refurbishing the houses in pye nest and woodland mount,It was a long drive from where i live in st helens but i really enjoyed it ,Nice place and nice people,Nice fish and chips to.
Yep probably filmed about 1967, single deck bus in foreground early in clip is a Daimler with Pennine body fleet number 110 ish, also New Victoria was rename from Victoria Hall about this time.
sad to see the death of Gordon Tidswell(the owner of the Chemist you can see on the film(8/04/2009).The Pub in the middle is the Griffin-the best pub in Halifax.I should know..i lived there at the time....1963-1982.
how wierd is it looking at halifax so many years ago.. how nice and peacefull does it look we have not seen flowers in town center for years .....bring back the 50s lol....
Great memory jogger thanks for posting it but you've all missed the clues. El Dorado is the name of the film being shown at the ABC and the film was released in 1966. So this is 1966 footage. Behind the camera to the right was the old Ramsden Brewery that was demolished to create the giant hole from which the new Halifax BS arose. Immediately behind the camera is the Gaumont cinema that was being turned around into a Bingo Club around that time. Brought back the memories thanks.
Definitely 60's as the New Victoria was so named in 1961. The white Viva van (17 seconds) wasn't produced until 1963, but I think I also see a Rover P6 and Hillman Hunter, both of which went into production in 1966.
Yes you're quite right - I forgot about the Corsair (has a droopy boot like the later Hunter). Spotted the R4 (but they go back as far as '59) and also a Triumph Herald and Hillman Imp from '63 ish.
I'm a bit confused about the El Dorado - Isn't that the ABC cinema? According to one reliable source it was renamed the ABC (from the Regal) in 1961, and I certainly remember it as the ABC in the late 60's and later. So it should be the ABC in this film - or have I got the wrong building entirely?
More like the late 60s I think or early 70s. In the 50s the buses had a back, open platform. Your buses have front doors which didn't come in until the early 70s, I think.
Als, the cinema opposite the New Victoria was not called the ElDorado. It was either the ABC in the 60s or the Regal...can't remember which.
ABC was the cinema opposite Eldorado during the 70's, now a nightclub I think. It's interesting noone can absolutely pin down the date here, early 60's seems to be the best bet.
@Captainjjb The New Victoria was called Victoria Hall until 1960 when it was refurbished and renamed. It later became the Halifax Civic Theatre in 1973 and changed back to The Victoria Theatre in 1993.The cinema was the Regal purpose built in 1938, which later became ABC in 1961 and closed in 2002. So, with this timeline we can pinpoint it to 1960 after The New Vic to 1961 before ABC
Wow! I never realised how colourful the place used to be and theres a lot of places that have been converted in to pubs or clubs now-a-days as well. I was in Halifax on Saturday and it is a gorgeous place if you look at all the buildings such as the Piece Hall and all the churches. Halifax has quite a history as well. It was the place where the Guilotine was invented and first used and the town hall was designed my the same person who designed the Houses of Parliament in London.
It's great to see these old clips. It's amazing to see how clean everything is and the sense of civic pride that comes across in the fifties. No asbo kids or drugs or big brother on the telly. All that and the Beatles to look forward to a couple of years down the line. Wow.
halifax is alright, not horrible, looks nice in the video but maybe its all the classic cars. when the sun shines on anywhere it can look nice. hebden bridge on the other hand is a good example of why we call yorkshire 'gods county'
i live in halifax too ma names kelly n im 13 i liv in mixenden i luv dis vid coz it shows u wat halifax used to luk lyk bak den n shows u ow much it has changed kl any1 in mixenden or ovenden or owt lyk dat wb ta bye x x x
It's great to see old films like this. I think Halifax is a nice enough town and has preserved well a lot of its industrial heritage and architecture. It has also managed to produce one of the largest banks in the UK, which is no mean feat! (And no, I'm not from there.)
I have to admit, EVERY town these days has gone the dogs. But Halifax has kept well =D Everytime I visit my other half here, I always find something new. But I still love the Acca, and such a shame Fagins got shut down :(
A great town, spoilt by a handful of racist xenophobes, and some questionable town planning. It's still failry green, only last year there were deer living on a roundabout in the town centre.
i saw the deer it was on the roundabout by the flyover n dont class halifax as backwards just because ur probably a backwards inbred dumb f*@k yourself from winnie ov hx
Ha ha (not). These old tacky-pub-stand-up-comedy style "let's all make up jokes about ***** (insert any town you please" type of comments are booooring to say the least. Try going to any of the towns you choose to mock and see them for yourself. Halifax is a beautiful town. Period.
Halifax has 60 pubs and clubs within a mile radius. I could write a book about my times in Halifax and I wouldn't want to leave (Its better the devil you know than the devil you don't). Anyway who gives a s**t about flowers !! WHHOOOOAOOO Hali Hali, Hali Hali Hali Hali FAX !!
Its gone to the dogs like most other places, its people that made it the way it is now, I lived in Mixenden when it was first built, great youth club for a Newcastle lad. made great mates, went back camping at Jerusalem farm a couple of years ago. Sorry to say drugs were in the parks, the place stinks
C'mon everyone! Yes the footage is lovely and its great to see my home town looking so good but there is still a lot that Halifax has to offer. You just need to know where to look. Get yourselves down to Dean Clough and see what you've got right on your doorsteps.
so beautiful i grew up in halifax but in the 50s life seem so peaceful but now we live in a town where drugs n crime destoryed everything so sad ,thanks for posting the vid really great.
well i wouldnt be wrong saying that if you stand on bull green then your in walking distance within a 2 mins of about 20 pubs so yeah theres a hell of a lot of pubs if u know the area!
got to say that was brilliant footage because thats way before my time i need to just ask what the hell has hapenned here i was born in the wrong era!
I was stood back in Bull Green today and y'know it's not all that bad really, a lack of giant colourful roundabout yes, and jolly busier yes, but it does have alot more bars than when my Grandad was around!
aye looks nice there, used to be a big town with lots of companies like the carpet factory, all gone now. The only interesting thing in halifax now is the Gulitine thing. Most people if they want to go somewhere will just go to Bradford now.
Thanks. My surname is North and apparently my North ancestors left Halifax to emigrate to New Zealand. I would love to visit one day. Nice video.

No Hunter there (red car's a Corsair, later white one close to the camera is a Vauxhall)
Spotted NSU Prinz and Renault 4 too. Definitely mid 60s at the earliest.
Rover was out '64 btw.
