This reminds me of Sunset Bowl on 9th St. No. St. Petersburg, Fl in springtime 1965 a local band in the area did a great rendition of this in the lounge.
During the 1960's Lloyd Thaxton had an "American Bandstand style" show on Los Angeles TV and I remember seeing the Uniques do this song on Lloyd's show during 1965. I did not realize Joe Stampley was the lead singer and could not remember last time I heard this song.
I always wondered who sang this song. It turned out to be the Uniques, whose lead singer was future country star Joe Stampley. He was pretty good in country but this song and the Uniques material beats his country songs to pieces. This should have been a bigger hit in the US. However, Joe would find success in country music both as a solo artist and with Moe Bandy.
On clwar nights back in the early 60's you could pick up both XERB, Mexico and KOMA OKlahoma for sometimes 30 minutes before they would fade out, Cheers for the Memories
I used to listen to KOMA when I lived in wichata Falls, tx., I was 12. You could only get it at night, but it was really a good station. They played the greatest songs. I remember "patches". Too sad for my tastes.
i remember distinctly hearing this song while on summer vacation visitng relatives in Levittown PA outside philly ..we'd get in the car and my cousin Mary would yell TURN ON WHIBBIGE {W I B G ] and WABC out of NYC... we had our own Djs up in Syracuse ,,, but Jumpin Joe Niagara and Murray the K were top shelf.
I was a junior at SHS in Springhill, LA in 1966 and the Teen Town Council frequently had dances at the rec center featuring the Uniques. Such a lucky girl my parents let me go. I remember when this record was released and still love it and Joe and the Uniques. Later, in college at LSU, I married their road manager. I remember the "All These Things" arrangement before it had strings...danced many times to the live band and it's still very special to me. Thank you Joe and Bobby and the band!
@TheSteviegurl maybe you can answer a question for me. didn't Joe record with another singer a song called The Dress. was one of the funniest songs iever heard
I played in a band with Don Zimmerman, Ricky Herrington, Mike Smith and Raymond Spence back in the late '60's and early '70's. Eddie Harris played with us some too under the title of Still Water. We had the privilage of playing breaks with the Uniques a couple of times and Joe and the rest of the Guys were really great. Thanks for the memories. I still play my Uniques albums sometimes.
Joe Stampley was from Springhill, LA not too far from my hometown of Rayville, LA (home of Tim McGraw). Joe was recording with the Uniques prior to getting into country music but he has always been a great singer in my opinion. Go Joe!
WOW Once again, another song listening to my Uncle Pete play the guitar here with Joe. I always knew you played with Joe but I have never listened to the music. I love it. Maybe I have found my new genre'
I actually have an aircheck from 93-KHJ, Los Angeles where this was a current hit. Great hit and brings back memories of the birth of Boss Radio (KHJ, KYNO, KFRC).
Seeing Joe Stampley and The Uniques then, and still lovig to hear their music just really wish I could go back in time. I want all their music but I have a hard time finding it.
I was surprised about Merle Kilgore in this song.He was a DJ also when he got involved with The uniques. Even tho he's gone now learning about this song being cowritten by him makes me remember him more. I love Joe Stampley and the Uniques music.I saw them 3 times in Ms.
Here in Oklahoma City during the sixties, we had two radio stations which programmed rock and roll, WKY930AM and KOMA1520AM. Occasionally, one record would make a survey of one station but not the other. This particular record by the UNIQUES made KOMA'S survey but not WKY's.

"Not Too Long Ago" was cowritten by Joe Stampley with country legend Merle Kilgore. Joe redid the song later in the 70's when he became a major country performer.
The Uniques disc was the first 45 that launched Stan Lewis's Paula label. The red label pictured here is the earliest design. Eventually they switched to a salmon-color with a cameo profile of Mr. Lewis's wife, whose first name happened to be Paula.

Never heard of this song and the fact that this wasn't a top charter but the country stuff was more successful. I blame the squares.

@oldermusiclover I'm not familiar with that song; if it was funny, it may have been recorded in his country and western days without the Uniques.

Only one radio station in the city of Hartford, CT
played this song. It never made it really big
in this area, but still a great song.
