  • omg soooo miss this place i went every year with my family and got the best childhood memories from here!! cnt beleive itsgone now i would of loved to have taken my kids there!!

  • I went to barry in 1993 it was one of my favourite holidays of my life , beautiful blue skies the whole fortnight , so sad to see it has been demolished

  • I worked in Barry Island Butlins in 1981. My duties included working during the shows in the theatre, moving stage sets and operating the follow spots, and showing the feature films a few times a week. I also showed the filmed horse racing in the ballroom twice a week. In the Pig & Whistle show bar on late night shows, I was lucky enough to meet stars like Bob Monkhouse, Mike Read, and many others. I enjoyed the whole season, and I'm glad I did it. The money was crap, but the fun was priceless.

  • so so sad, childhood memories, memories of working there when i it was majestics, made me cry, THANK YOU SO MUCH XX

  • I worked at Barry Island Butlins in 1967 as a Redcoat on the swimming pools. I have some very fond memories of the place. I would dearly love to hear from some of people who I worked with. Laurie, Larry Knight (deceased), Bruce, Dennis ( I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE YOU AGAIN ), Tiger, Oscar Ashley-Davis, ect. I can be found at 078511273698 and my name is Don. Thank you very much for the posting, it bought back a lot of great memories.

  • This is facinating. I love the way you have filmed the old images and then how it looked just before domilition. Its kind of sad and haunting but it also evokes some of the happiest times of my life. Im sad to see it go. It also captures a much different Britain and a much different society than the one we have now. thanks.

  • Wow!!! Now this brings back memories. I was an assistant supervisor in the Lounge bar through the summer of 1978. I met some wonderful people and I had a wonderful time.

  • i went there as a child this brings back many magic memories of my dad

  • Thank you everyone for your pleasant comments and sharing your memories of Butlins Barry Island, It's great to see the video has touched so many of you and to see it has bought back some fond memories, this is exactly why I put this video together. I truely believe with some money spent and a slight make-over the camp would still be thriving today. Shame on the Vale of Glamorgan council. Matt.

  • Barry island, was always a good holiday for my family. It wasnt all about money. as BILLY BUTLIN said , a weeks holiday for a weeks pay ,not now . thanks for the memorys.

  • Great post, I worked as a sound / lighting technician in the Theatre and Pig & Whistle show bar in the 1981 season. Great memories, wouldn't have missed it for the world.

  • Cant believe it closed i loved it i was very young when we went but got some amazing memoriesbrought tears to my eyes seeing it like that. Cant believe it got replaced by houses

  • Thanks so much for posting this. My Dad was musical director at the camp in the 70's and 80's. I spent many happy summer days at the camp, so many of the images in your film brought back distant happy memories...The pool, the arcade, the cablecars, the pig and whistle, the ballroom....magical. It is particularly sad to see the silent rusted and rotting ruins of a place which once was so alive with laughter, warmth and happiness. Happy Days.

  • Perfect Music

  • my dad said when he work there in 1976 the pool inside had a Glass bottom

people used to be able to stand in a bar and watch the girls bathers fall down :))

  • This may have been a dive but being born in 1981 I went here every summer as a child & I have so many fond memories, from paying 10p to play in the arcade while Yazz & 'The Only Way is Up' played over the speakers to getting up early to go to the bakers to get an iced finger! It may not live up to many standards today but it WAS a part of my childhood & i'm sorry it's no longer around.. being a kid at these places is magical & really is what you make it, a wonderful holiday with your family!

  • It was a total shit hole, ant infested, cockroach ridden hole.

  • sad video

love the way the well meet again play over the top of the end

  • what a waste to make way for new homes.i hate new builds homes there crap i should know ive built them.

To hear dave Brady's voice again was a tribute to a great man. RIP. Dave.

  • absolutely gutted that its not the way it was why couldnt they have made it better than worse i mean they've wasted something that was basicly the heart of the island, well ive lived in barry all my life and used to go there as a child, ill always have my personal memory's........very dissapointed with barry towns council taking away a great place n not to mention the cold knap what a great place that WAS in the summer.

  • i am 41 now and still remember twice a year holidays at Barry with my Mum and Dad.We must have visited over 30 times.I have now travelled all over the world and still reguard my memories of my butlins holidays as the best in my life.I would so love to wind the clock back to these days when everyone was smiling and little things meant a lot.unlike how this country is now.closing this Holiday camp finnished Barry, maybe some snobs in the coucil thought they were better than it,how wrong they were.

  • Thank you for posting this...very sad. But nice to know what happend. It's such a shame.

  • I went to Barry Island in 1988! I was 15 years old and i won the snooker tournament that they had. Met a great bunch of lads from coventry and we had a right laugh. Had a few holiday romances too! well i was 15Q

! lol... i even used to get caught sneaking into Co Co's nightclub a few times by my parents! It was a great place. It is so so sad to see this video with its "then and now" footage. Either way, thankyou barry island xxx

  • my mum and dad used to bring us every year in the 80's.before my dad drived we used to get the train,i remember the porters waitin at the station who would wheel all your luggage up the hill.the thing i rember the most though were the cable cars, shame you didnt get video footage of them.great vid though and brought back loads of great memories from the 80's!! cheers!!!

  • I worked there in 86 and again in 91 had some of the best years of my life in the entertainment buisiness. They can take the camp but they can never take the memories.

  • Thanks for this video.. i had some wonderful holidays at Barry Iland Butlines... I love them all. Every year we used to go adn the same time adn meet friends that also used to go every year at the same time.. It was great... Love to see you all again xxx

  • My wife was a Redcoat here for 5 yrs. Best yrs of her life!!! She appears on the final night video. Would love to see a clearer copy? Thanks for the memories

  • Such an important part of my childhood. A disgrace how it was left to rot. Vale of Glamorgan council hang your head in shame.

  • the locals didnt help either saying they don't need butlins etc shop owners were happy, shows how many idiots in barry didn't even know what was running there own town barry is just a empty shell now there is actually no point in going there anymore for me... its sad to see the old swimming pool finally gone now it was there last time i went with family in 2005 rotting away but still memories i dont think they have any excuse for getting rid of the swimming pool nothing has been built on it

  • i live in barry and my mum and dad use 2 go there all the time in the 80s and i can remember swiming in the outdoor pool on the last day it was open i was only about 3. it wasnt us who said we didnt need it it was the council like everything in barry the corroupt council is behind it just the like swimming pool in the cold nap.

  • I live in Barry and my 1st job, in 1983, was as a porter at the arrivals lounge at Butlins barry Island. Prevcious to that, my grandfather worked as security on the main gate during the 1970s, and as a child of 9 or so I used to be allowed in for free. great memories....Dont know why the vale of Glamorgan council decided to let this little gem go.....Oh, yes I do...to build houses and claim 250 or so annual council tax. Silly me!

  • exactlly

  • i spent the first 15 years of my life annually at Barry ,fantastic times gone but never forgotten thanks for posting T.J
