Didn't want Cousy, Claimed he'd never heard of Connie Hawkins during Hawkins' NBA Freeze out, Sold Chamberlain a lot of noise, then hid behind Russell when Wilt walked over to him, then LAUGHED about it during an interview years later. A REAL man huh? Chamberlain could've mangled BOTH of them if he'd wanted to. When Danny Ainge wanted to break away from Baseball & Play Basketball,Red spoke up for 'Ainge's Rights'. It was pointed out that it was only because he had a personal interest.
@Nickcat5--5 ft 9 Red should have fought Wilt all 7 foot + of him.At 1 time there was talk of Wilt fighting Cassius Clay(Muhammad Ali). During the Depression Red played basketball at PS 122 in NY where he was named "2nd Team All-Brooklyn" by the World-Telegram in his senior year.Red received an athletic scholarship to the basketball program of Bill Reinhart at GWU in Washington,D.C.Red was a standout player and graduated with a M.A. Hawkins 1 championship in the ABA in the NBA ZERO!
@geocgeo What kind of player or coach he was isn't at issue here. You really don't read well do you?? And since this is YOUR idea of what accomplishments are ,How many championships do you have?? Not as many as Connie Hawkins.Right? You are right,Wilt was asked to fight Ali & Russell wasn't.( Drew Bundini Brown even thought Wilt had a chance). Any fight I pick or if I sound off at someone ,I take care of it,I wouldn't hide behind someone then laugh about it later.
@Nickcat5 1978 Red is leaving. That's the rumor. He's tired of butting heads with asshole John Y. Brown the Kentuckian who doesn't understand what Red means to Boston. Brown trades 3 No. 1 picks for Bob McAdoo without consulting GM Red. It's the ultimate anti-Red trade. Red hated giving up first-round picks. Bob McAdoo? A Celtic? For 3 first-round picks? Red can't take. Now he's leaving to take the Knicks' job. It's the worst-kept secret in town.Only one problem: We won't let him leave.
@geocgeo Yea,I remember ALL THE SLEEP I lost over it. In fact ,I was so tired that I forgot to pay my rent & was kicked out of my apartment. I called Red (We were personal friends,I'll have you know) & asked him for a few bucks, from all the money he saved keeping the Celtics salaries down, & believe it or not,I never got an answer from him
@Nickcat5 Red was a great coach but the cheapest prick in the world although he would take his whole team out for chinese food(he loved it and was part owner of a chinese restaurant at 1 time) and pick up the entire tab...You asked him for a few bucks? If you told him you were willing to pay juice I bet he would have given to you...ROFL
Auerbach hosted weekly lunches at the China Doll in Washington(now closed) each Tuesday, and regaled his guests with stories from his younger days. Invitations were hard to come by. He was a legend, the best coach and front office executive to ever grace the game of basketball. ...........
