Zingers just doesn't come in as many varieties as they used to. I remember in the early 2000's they still made butterscotch flavored ones, but now they don't. And I've walked into the bakery downtown to try to buy some!
In its early days, Channel 42's transmitter was not strong enough to reach all parts of the Birmingham Metro Area. So, for a time a reflector tower was erecte in Irondale, east of the city. It transmitted on Channel 78.
The quirky network audio during the Charlie Brown show was a by-product of the coax-microwave system used to distribute CBS, ABC and NBC programming across the nation from 1951 to the beginning of 1978. That was when satellite signal distribution, with natural quality audio, was fully put into place.
I got a question and it's concerning the game show "Concentration".
Now, I understand that this video was recorded back on Monday, October 24, 1977 (I didn't come into the world until April 1978, LOL).
At 9 seconds into the video, the "Concentration" credits stop & the year reads MCMLXXVI (meaning 1976).
Was that a rerun? And if it was, could there be a possibility that CBS affiliate WBMG-TV 42 Birmingham (Now WIAT-TV 42) might have any copies of the Jack Narz syndicated episodes?
these shows was taped month in advanced of airing. and back in the day, most markets only aired the show weekly. and some markets might have been aired this show 6 months after the show was first aired in Atlanta, New York, Chicago, and Detroit. (this was all before satellites).
Another possibility regarding the differences between the recording date and air date of this particular "Concentration" is that maybe it was one of the last "Concentration" episodes to be taped in 1976. Yet another possibility is that the production co. just "sat on" this particular episode of "Concentration" before they released it.
Another possibility is that many syndicated shows back in the day were "bicycled", that is, transferred from one market to the other; as a result, it would mean that a station from one market airs the latest episode, while a station from another market airs an episode produced the previous year.
I think that's how they found the CBS episodes of "The Joker's Wild." It was thought that those were wiped or destroyed until they were found in 2000 at WCBS-TV (New York City).
I also heard that "Gambit" (CBS, 1972-76) was also bicycled, shown on WPIX (New York City) and KHJ (Now KCAL, Los Angeles) back in the fall of 1977. In other words, they might be misplaced (it was rumored that the episodes were erased).
I wonder what other shows were bicycled? Makes me wonder now.
In areas were Dolly Madison is not sold (mostly the Mid Atlantic East Coast including the New York City area) the sponsor of the Peanuts specials instead of Dolly Madison is Peter Paul Candy Bars.
I used to love when they would show the title card and then the sponsers for it. Shame they don't do that anymore. I'm just waiting for someone to upload the Norelco Santa one, the one from the 70's. There is one on here but it's in black and white. Hopefully somewhere, someone has it.
I actually don't remember them airing the Ronald McDonald commercials during any of the Charlie Brown specials, they were usually the 'We Do It All For You' ones.
"When you follow our stylist, you're never in doubt"
And the lady is laughing her *ss off at the guy's selection.
God, I remember that Special Presentation intro: As a kid, it always meant Peanuts was starting. I remember one time it came on and Peanuts didn't, I was so angry.
Thanks a ton to whoever taped this and didn't erase it! This was one of my holy grails- ironically the only thing I remembered about that KooKoos ad was "Remember the name, forget the name!"
Less than 5 minutes of commercials, and the only intrusion on the show was a voiceover on the end credits- I always HATED when they did that and can't watch TV at all the way it is now!
There's even commercials for Miller Beer, The Birmingham News newspaper, and a Logan's Run (which took over the time slot for the short lived "Young Dan'l Boone" after a few weeks) will not be seen tonight promo.
I remember this. I always liked the 'A CBS Special Presentation' clip that preceded Charlie Brown, Bugs Bunny, Garfield, the Grinch, etc. Notice the McDonald's logo is crooked on the screen. You gotta love TV back in the '70's. Who was the announcer on CBS back then? Sounded like Bern Bennett, the announcer on Y & R.
OH. I'm going to cry! I used to love that colorful spinning "CBS Special" That meant I was allowed to stay up late, drink soda, eat popcorn, and dream about eating Dolly Madison cakes and McDonald's cheeseburgers.

Who was the V/O announcer for WBMG-TV's ID from 1977? I recall the same announcer did one back in the early 1980s.

So, does anyone else find it a bit odd that they would air "It's Your First Kiss" on this particular night, rather than "It's the Great Pumpkin"?
mdumas43073 3 years ago
Sort of... Considering the time period, it's a possibility they aired "It's the Great Pumpkin..." later in the week closer to Halloween.

The Dolly Madison "Koo Koos" commercial really bugs me. What is the joke supposed to be? Is Koo Koo an ethnic slur?
BadIdeaSociety 3 years ago
Uh, I think the people believe they're being called 'koo koo' instead of the name of the snack.

I watched this on Channel 42 the very night it aired so I saw all this live. I watched Charlie Brown religiously as a kid. Thanks for posting this.

I'd vote "rerun." I'd almost be certain that 42 has not a trace of the Narz "Concentration" anywhere to their name.
(Wish some of this version existed in full myself)

This was a great find. Thanks for recording and sharing this!
I was hoping to hear the top of the hour "bong" that CBS TV used to use until the mid-80s.

Good video does anyone have any clips of a Jack Narz Concentration, in addition to the end I just saw?.

Did most Peanuts specials sponsored by McDonald's show McDonald's commercials aimed at teenagers rather than the Ronald McDonald McDonaldland ones?

I was six years old in 1977, and LIVED for Peanuts specials. McDonald's and Dolly Madison ads always made them extra special. Thanks for sharing! :)
