as someone who has worked in MANY MANY professional recording studios i can tell you exactly how autotune works. you tell the computer or the hardware device what key the song is in, and it processes whatever you give it to stay in that key. if you listen closely to this video you can hear kanye running out of breathe and dropping key only to have the antares autotune rackmount unit save him just in time. this is exactly what t-pain uses and its on damn near every popular rap song now.
