Sure. So could all the people you see in this video (including the 9-year-old boy) - most of the folks there have won LEGO sumo events all around the state of Indiana, and most of those people are currently consultants for LEGO in the MCP program.
The goal was to *have* to start with Tribot, and *have* to use that structure, being otherwise limited only to the parts in a 1.0 kit.
I started with a tribot-based structure, and using only parts in one kit, made a 4 wd sumo bot geared 5:1.(so its ridiculously slow) It uses the battery lid as a ramp and is shaped like a flat box. (for a low center of gravity)
I could, but I don't really like rubber band guns - Zamor spheres are much more effective (and much quicker to reload). If you look through my other videos, you might like the "Frangible LEGO" one... ;)
i love your videos lucky for you that have any friend that likes lego i have built lego for 13 years and i still dont know any friends that i can built machines with :( im so alone....
Well, to get together with my "local friends" I have to drive 2.5 hours one way, so you may have to expand your search horizons a little bit to find folks this dedicated (or crazy).
Even the tank couldn't have taken on the Bulldozers - those things are just too big! They do a good job of rolling right over the smaller opposition, and in this event... yes, even that tank (by John Brost) was a "small competitor" :)
What you are seeing is the combined collection of five individuals, as well as some sets donated by LEGO for the actual contest. But yes, that is... a lot of cash sitting in one room :).
The tank was very nicely done, and has been posted as a project on LEGO's NXTlog site (search for the user jbrost76). I have more video of this event, but this is really the interesting stuff... do you really want to watch 10 minutes of unedited home movies every time you visit YouTube :) ?
You're welcome! the Tank ("L-1 LEGO Battle Tank") is a creation of John Brost, and watching the bogie wheels adjust as it ran over an edge was wonderful. The forklift was great as well, created by Bryan Bonahoom.

is it a good design for a mini sumo competition?

What sensor does the robot with the flipper (at 0:45) use to detect that the robot is on the ramp?
Jeremyc56 2 years ago
That one was actually one of mine. The flipper was triggered when the USE sensor "saw" something closer than 10 cm (if memory serves).
brdavis5 2 years ago
ok, and so is the flipper just a beam connected to the tribot's 3rd motor?
Jeremyc56 2 years ago
Yep.

The tank is just beautiful.
The fork lift is better than I expected - and highly effective.
Thanks for posting this Brian - really enjoyed watching all the creations!

AidanHockey34 4 years ago
Agreed - Perhaps a Hailstorm-derivative can make it in the nExt event. It probably wouldn't do a lot, but it would be a blast to watch...
