I believe these kids! I was in a production of this show in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1984, and some of the other men rolled up hankies into a circle under their hats and then nestled the bottle into the indentation on top. I DID NOT, as I wanted to feel the suspense and pure joy when I made it through the "drag on your knees" part without dropping my bottle!!! What a feeling - all these years later, I STILL get goosebumps watching it. Thanks guys!! Tom Gallagher, Toronto, Ontario
we just did this in jr high and everyone said it was better than a high school performance... XD but we had the bottles duct taped to the hats...lol cuz we didnt have enough time to practice. and even so one of the guys bottles fell off XD
My school just did Fiddler, and the bottle dance was amazing. No velcro or any tricks to keep the bottles on except some water in them. They added Perchik, played by my boyfriend into it and I know that he practiced a lot to be able to keep it balanced. The last dress rehersal before opening night one, first night that judges were there someones bottle fell off, proof of no velcro. This was really well done.

Wow . . . . I'm doing this dance in my High School's production of Fiddler on the Roof and the version of the dance we're doing is A LOT less complicated. We're using velcro, too. We're doing the Jr. version of the production but I don't think that affects the choreography. Plus, we're a very small school with a very small drama department and this is the first time ever that we'll be doing a musical, so . . . yeah. This totally trumps us. :D
Sacred Heart did Fiddler in 2008. It was amasing to see in grade seven. I'm now a producer and actress at the Heart. When I saw Sacred Heart's bottle dance I couldn't believe my eyes!!! No offence, but I think SHHS, was a little better. Nothing to hold the bottles on their heads; the hats were not dented either. Thus we are 'the finest professionals in amateur theatre.' But I really love the set, and I would call this second place!
It kind of makes me upset that it was obvious the people playing instruments onstage weren't really playing...
But the dance was pretty good. We did this at my high school a couple years ago. They actually put dents into the hats to make it easier to do the dance.
While it is clear that they didn't use any "tricks", they obviously didn't use their range of movement to their full potential. You actually have quite a lot of leeway for leaning if you have about two inches of water (note this varies with the dimensions of the bottle). They also weren't very dramatic with their movements at 2:20, which is the dramatic part. There also was mostly up/downward movements, along with spinning, which is easiest, but they had a small stage.
Sweet. My school is doing Fiddler on the Roof right now and i am in the chorus and that is one of my most favorite scenes...it never gets old....to me anyways
I did that musical in like 7th grade and I was a bottle dancer with no strings attacted. that takes a heck of a lot of practice, lol. It was so cool though
Wow, we did this same musical, and after the bottle dance is done, you guys had a way cooler dance. But our bottle dance was much harder. We had the floor slides and moved way quicker. But you guys had cool looking bottles too.

this is an awesome show with amazing music...i just have one concern....WHAT ON EARTH is the lead clarinet player doing...whoever they are they are not tounging anything. I know for a FACT that they are not playing the music right. We just performed that at the theatre in town and we played the official music and i had the lead part and the music was marked as stacatto not legato. that ruins the whole effect of the dance and i couldn't stand to finish it simply becuase of the messed up music.
When I did this dance, it was shorter, but the tempo was a lot faster. Me, I didn't have velcro or tape or even a hollowed-out hat. All I had was my bottle and a flat top-hat. Did the whole thing with pure balance and concentration.
oooh mannn we totally just did this at my high school, with no tricks (wouldnt do it any other way, they were balancing the bottles). i was in percussion for pit, it's hella good music, i can just hear the timpani's at 1:59......

i acually did the bottel dance for my school and the glasses werent weighed they had velcrow at the bottem of them and the hats were hollowed out so you can just stick them inside
that was very good. if no velcro was used, more power to you. also, i have to say that's one of the best looking high school productions I've seen on Youtube. The choreography was spot on, the costumes and sets were great, and the orchestra really sounded good.
No, it's possible to do without velcro. Our guys did it at Slippery Rock University in 1981, and at the very end of the dance one night, one guy dropped his. It smashed all over the apron of the stage. I was playing Golde, so as mother of the bride, I went ahead and cleaned up the mess so no one would trip on glass. Most people don't do it with velcro; and you can tell when it's there, because the bottles tip so tackily.
Cool, I was Mordcha in our local play. today was the last performance. :( I had to balance so many platters with drinks and they were making tapping noises cause i was so nervous i didnt want to drop them..
I have done three productions of "Fiddler," two of them in dinner theatre. I wasn't one of the bottle dancers (I was Mordcha in two productions, Lazar Wolf in the third). In those shows (about 100 performances among them) the bottle dancers always used Velcro because they didn't want to risk dropping one. I applaud your dancers for doing without. That took some guts!
@Largo64 my high school is putting this on right now and they did not use velcro for the bottles. The hats just have a large dip in them so it's a little easier. But, it's still hard.
@Largo64 I have danced that part in an other production of the Fiddler of the Roof, and we didn't use velcro. If the bottle is heavy enough, it's not falling down.
that was...awesome...i'm in that production at my high school right now, but we couldn't afford to practice with real bottles, so we just got hats with velcro and velcroed the bottles to the hats...and we only have three bottle dancers, but we are actually a pretty small cast...which is sad...
not the hardest thing to do, they really simplified their version, I've done it before, and I'm doing it again in another production, ours is more like the theatrical version
Wonderful Joy and Blessings to ALL!
