I forgot until a friend of mine told me last night that I played this song with him in a band named Was in 1972! I even forgot the name of the band! Had to revisit the song and now it's coming back thanks to the You Tube library!
Haven't heard this since the '60s. Good to hear again! Way cool song w/ funky beat & hip lyrics about the politics of recognition & respect for "difference" - way before it was in vogue among (some) academics in '80s & '90s. The lyrics would not make much sense w/out the context of the ‘50s-‘60s U.S. civil rights movement - & the beat & hippie movements w/ their emphasis on authenticity as well as the American Indian, Latino, feminist, environmental, & similar progressive social movements.
What a Great band. Youlden voice and Simmons guitar. You have to give the hole band credit.I'm so grateful I got to see them in concert.I will never get tired listen to one of the best English bands ever!
thank you , i been trying to find these guys for fuckin forever. great to hear these guys again. thought we'd lost em . i am so glad there are people out here that care this much . thank you again you did a whole of us real good. hello savoy brown.
they played at a free concert in 69/70 held by wabx,i worked there and had a chance to interview either savoy brown,or terry reid,a chose terry, but it was never published, mabe i chose wrong,,lol
Ain't that a crying shame Savory Brown's not in the R&R HOF and the Sex Pistols are. What's wrong with this picture. Johnny if your reading this you and your band sucked
The guy pictured on the album cover wearing the black top hat is Chris Youlden. He was the lead singer of 'I'm Tired' and lead singer on most of the songs on their first 5 or 56 albums.
He put out a solo album called 'Nowhere Road'. Musically, the songs on 'Nowhere Road' are good, perhaps as good as the Savoy Brown stuff. But the lyrics are exceptional.
I feel like this is a song you listen to in the back of your van while cruisin around the neighborhood with your friends.I mean it is a 70's song and I'm not hatin it.
Great bluesy voice of Chris Youlden. Wonder if Savory Brown would have became as big as let say The Doors if Chris stayed on. Mick Walker was a wonderful replacement. I like him just as much. Thanks for posting this song
Man this music is so original that I get to hear this music from the game Driver Parallel Lines. Im really glad to hear all this classic song on youtube and on the game in order to know this song!
Much better than Lady Goo Goo. Ain't nothing like this today.Has undertones of Hendricks. And I ain't gonna toe the line I'm tired of trying to be something I know ain't me I'm tired of living up to what people expect me to be You know some people are different Now ain't that a crying shame Now wouldn't be a real drag if we were all the same And I'm not going to try to please Eyes that just don't see If I get myself together You'll have the blues not me
The rules baby, the rules.I started growing up in the 70's. this shit was true then, still is. Now wouldn't it be a real drag if we were all the same..............
@MsPokeyman I can relate to what you just said, they don't make music like they used to, now it's about the money and spotlight, back in the days it meant something, it had real instrments, wonder why im stuck in the past, 50's through the 80's is the best era for anything.
got see a show SB in a small bar, like being in your living room, as KIM said. got to talk to the band between sets. kim signed all my lps & cds, i tryed to buy the band members a drink, but they said buy a cd instead, so i bought two. one is live in central park in the 70s. the other was one put in '96. the show was late '96.
My first exposure to SB, on the radio at 5:00 AM while mopping the floor at the grocery then off to school, 1969. Youlden and Simmonds, together or apart, were huge talents and a great influence on me. "We stole this thing from him, and he from someone else".
I've always loved this song since first hearing it back in 1970. In fact, to this day, I still use the phrase "now wouldn't it be a real drag if we were all the same" quite routinely.
It's basically E7 to A7-if you play D on the B string and then open B whilst playing the E chord, then G to E likewise on the A chord-hope this helps!
Yeah I'm pretty sure Michaels is still alive. He is up there in the top 5 keyboardists of all time. WIth Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, and Richard Wright.
My band is really diggin the Savoy stuff. It's funny, I have to twist their arms to play them...but once they play it a couple times, it's clear everyone enjoys the refreshingly different brand of blues.....as long as I can sing it...HA!.
yes they did fuck up changing to foghat...but foghat is also really good.....not the mainstream shit you hear on the radio but b-sides....but yea savoybrown= fucking awesome
I agree rich soulful whiskey soaked...got to interview Simmonds in 1990 said Youlden was wastin' away drinkin' in obscure pubs & not singin' anymore what a shame
I think I may have finally found the right mix of players, in my recent band, to pull off the Raw Sienna stuff. Some of the best music I have ever heard. And probably will never hear anything like it again. To pay tribute is all I want.
But it's hard...everyone in the band seems to think doing Needle And Spoon wouldn't be a good idea. See, what I'm up against?
the whole era is all about addiction, retrospect, lessons in life, and the eternal youth of good soulful music..timeless!
@kevin I agree with your bandmates. Savoy Brown is great, but I doubt even Kim Simmonds would do that song today. Lots of other good songs by them to cover. If the lyrics were anti-heroin then maybe, but it semi-glorifies it. I've been in bands, & feel untrue just playing songs like Cocaine, after what I've seen addiction do. Drugs are shit, & unless a song is against them, I feel uncomfortable playing it. It sends out the wrong message. Who the hell wants to reminisce about mainlining heroin?
Well, I do get your point and agree with you up to the pointI
I think a song about drugs can be good even if it's not militantly anti-drug. That is, it can work, artistically and morally, if if acknowledges the appeal of drugs, the pleasures of them while being very clear about how it enslaves the user. I mean, a drug song can be three-dimensional without ignoring how awful drugs are.
@kevincanwait very cool, absolutly love the first few with Youlden, as for "Needle & Spoon" that's silly...there are many old blues songs that a great that are not PC.ABC or Alphabet Blues by Blind Willie McTell about writing his ABC's w/ a rusty straight razor on his cheatin GF begs to be redone !
@kevincanwait its funny that its the savoy brown blues band but with each album they get progressively more jazzy do needle and spoon as a public service announcement

As much as I like Simmonds playing, the best talent in all of the versions of this band was Chris Youldan. Incredible songwriter and one of the best blues voices I've ever heard.
They are still touring and I recently talked to the band in Rochester MN... Kim Stevens is a very down to earth cool guy. His music is STILL kick ass.
I saw this guys in concert in 1970 or was it 71? I'm tired of the time going so quickly. Great band!

Savoy Brown: great band name, great band! They were unlike any other band.
Very sophisticated, very smooth.

They are still touring and I recently talked to the band in Rochester MN... Kim Stevens is a very down to earth cool guy. His music is STILL kick ass.
