My wife's Dad was a great scientist and world-renowned animal expert. They too had rats, cats together as well as snakes and lizards even stink bugs, (he was an insect specialist). The secret was that all animals were introduced, (excepting the bugs) at a very young age.
It is extremely unlikely that the cat in THIS video will ever harm the rat - however anything CAN happen.
This is so funny to me because I had an agouti hooded doe named Chiquita, too! We put her to sleep last summer due to a tumor, as well. :( Rats are such great pals, it's so sad that they spend so little time here with us. I'm sure your Chiqui is thanking you for all the good times. :)

Their personalities and characters are so complex, it's like losing a real friend.

LOL We just had a tumor removed from Willie's neck last week and when the swelling went down, just a couple days ago, we see another huge lump. Wth? We go back Friday to have the stitches removed. I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had rats since I was a child. I haven't had any for awhile because they're so prone to tumors and respiratory infections. I have found that a little terramycin antibiotic (sold at Intermountain Farmers) have healed their respiratory infections, and is also whay pet stores use. Just a very small amount in fresh water each day. Still, it's hard to get another because they have a short life span.They're so affectionate and easy to love, so it's very hard.

@MrBackonchicken It's not...grooming is very relaxing to rats, they fall asleep quite easily when being groomed, even if by an animal that is usually a predator to their species. There's nothing wrong with her.

At first I kept them completely separate. Molly would get locked in another room while the rats would run around and they were always in their own cage while she was out. One night, however, Chiquita broke herself and the others out of their cage and she woke me up by climbing on my face. I was terrified that Molly had hurt the others, but when I got up, Molly was just patiently watching the rats run around. After that I let them interact, but only under close supervision. :)
cool! i don't think that would work out so well with my dog. when i first got my rats, the dog kept trying to jump up on the table and peek into their cage!
@fuzzysnail47 In that sort of situation, a cat wouldn't eat the rat. Being introduced to the rat by its owner, the cat would be curious, and, if the cat was immediately aggressive towards the rat, all it would do is hiss, swat it and/or try and bite it, much like they would do when attacking one of their toys. In that event, a rat could be seriously injured via scratching or being mauled to death. But not eaten. An ordinary well-fed, cared for house cat would not seek a meal of the rat. :)
i had a pet rat named mrs.whiskers, she died too. she had a tumor i belive something to do with her being overweight. whenever i said her name she would be happy to see me and jump up and hold onto the top inside of the tank. hard to explain through text. =]

Rats look like that when you groom them. They fall into sort of a trance. I thought mine died too when I first stroked her, but don't worry. It's just how they react to pleasure :)

She looks like mine <3. im crazy in love with her <3.
Sadly she has a tumor too. i will not let it be removed. she's 2.5 years old. too old for sugery. she doesnt seen to care about the tumor. so as long she's not having problems with it. im neighter.
