  • thank you ever so much. i was stressing out because i thought i was going to have to send my horn somewhere just to get the string replaced. but this saved me so much time and money. thank you.

  • Great video! I was on a residential course when my string broke, I didn't know how to restring it so I had to tape it back on.

  • sooooo useful ive wasted so much time trying to do this without any clue of how to do it!!

    THANK YOU!

  • if you put the string under itself again on the last screw, you will have less of a problem of the sting loosening up and becoming slack.

  • @bradn7

    GOOD POINT

  • thank u dood!!!

    you are a life saver....

my string broke a day before a march!!!!

  • wow! the popsicle stick idea is very good, my keys are not perfectly aligned but still it doesnt effect the sound but now if my strings ever do break again then I know what to do, but usually they havnt been breaking, since I have a double horn the valve that switches from Bflat to F breaks

  • ah! dang it! i need help with the trigger!!! good video though!

  • Thank you for the helpful video. We just started with this instrument and needed to learn to sting this our self to save time and money. There are not a lot of resources to learn about how to do this. Your video is Great!

  • Thanks. I'm happy you found it useful.

  • Thank You So Much!!!! My Band Teacher Doesnt Know How To String French Horn. My Strings Broke and i had to bring them to the repair shop. About 2 weeks later they broke again. Now i know how to string them my band teacher has asked me to string all the horn!

  • I'm glad it was helpful :-)

  • Lol - I was ready to buy two ice lollies, but forgot the cash!

I found that instead of two popsicle sticks, you can use two school rulers back to back.

I told my student to squash them hard over the spatulas while I was restringing. It worked at the second attempt and she got to play jingle bells to me in the remaining 5 minutes!

    Thanks again Craig!

  • Hi Craig. One of my students had a problem with her string last week (it had snapped) - I told her to get it sorted at the music shop before Monday night's performance.

Come Monday, she had bought the string - but I had just 20 minutes during the performance to somehow try to attach it. Without tools, I failed and she never got to perform in what would have been her first public performance.

So last night, I looked at your instructions and followed them today in stringing her valve.

    Thankyou!

  • Been there! That's why I posted this. Glad it could be of some help even if it was a little late.

  • You make it look so easy, lol.

Anything different for the thumb key?

  • Not really. Just reverse the direction you wrap the string. :-)

  • Thanks Craig. This is simple but only thanks to your clear instructions.

  • You're welcome. I hope it can be of some use.

  • This video was used in my teacher workshop today as an example of instructional videos on YouTube. I recognized the band room immediately!

  • Lol. That's too funny. Hope things are going well for you.

  • Hello there!

I am a teacher as well and I have found your presentation quite helpful and useful, not only for students but also for people (like me) who has never had a horn with a string valves action (and I had to do that once, quickly!)

    Cheers

  • Thanks. Glad it could be of help.

  • awesome dude=]

  • isn't that a rotor, not a valve?

  • Technically, yes. Most everyone I know refers to it in the general sense as a valve, however.

  • Thanks a lot for posting this video. A friend of mine recently broke one of strings, so I think I will be able to restring it for him now! :)

  • Your welcome. :^)
