  • Love this. First saw Los Lobos when they opened a Dead show sometime in the 80s. Been seeing ever since. Just about the best live show around.

  • hey txlastrebel get your racist head out of your ass and stick with listening to that new wave fake ass country music that I know you listen to. How does Keith Urbans cock taste by the way??

  • actually 1saintsfan this was the time when jerry was clean and out there playin and enjoying life. Get your facts straight before you try to make a bad joke. And to anyone who doesnt think that loslobos is a legitamite band need a bash in the skull with david hildagos guitar.PEACE

  • these wetbacks suck

  • Jerry Garcia and Los Lobos covering CCR. Wow!! Now I've seen it all.

And I thought Marilyn Manson covering The Eurythmics was weird.....lol.

  • Treasure.

Back in the day I used to think that Los Lobos was a Cover Band....

    I discovered my mistake.

Los Lobos is NOT a Cover Band...they are just so good that they can do anybody's music and make it sound better than the original.

What they really are is a mega-talented bunch of guys who who ain't afraid to get on stage with the best.

  • JB dies in 82 =(

  • sweeet !!!

  • I believe this was during Garcia's Heroin/Freebase Coke years...Is that John Belushi and Richard Pyror I see off stage???

  • How many bands ever had two singers as good as Cesar Rosas and David Hiddalgo?

  • David with a beard ??

  • This is the most animated Jerry had been in years....Even for a brief moment, that weight was off his shoulder.

  • This was a precursor to summer tour when Los Lobos opened for them. Iko Giants stadium rain show!

  • God I love this,

  • Los Lobos is the most spiritual band out there. When they play mother mary must be listening.

  • shit man Jerry lays it down dirty and nasty in this one folks.. f*** the haters.. I would take Jerry any way I could get him these days.. RIP Jerry.

  • Hey gangster......You got it man !

    Peace

    a Musician

  • no.... nobody ....ever saw Jerry Garcia play live...

  • that's a pretty good improv

  • You can see Jerry not used to The Les Paul at all..

  • I always wanted to see Jerry go back to a Les Paul or a Strat. It does look strange. I never liked the custom guitars he played from the mid 70's on.

  • @jab3785 Garcia never used a les paul and as far as the strat goes he never used them either and those custom guitars you speak of are Doug Irwin"s the tiger and rosebud set jerry back a cool $40,000 each after jerry passed "the wolf" and "the tiger' were auctioned off and brought in almost a million bucks each and they both had amazing sounds come out of them up until bob bralove put that horrific midi computer sounds. I cannot listen to a single tape with that noise coming out .

  • @coyote023 What are you talking about? With the exception of the first album, everything from Anthym to Europe "72 were recorded with a Paul, a Strat, or an SG(he did also use the Guild on a few cuts on Working). He had 4 or 5 different Les Pauls, and at least 4 different Strats through the years. And the best sounding guitars were the Bean's(and that's not just my opinion; he even said that the single coil pickups on his Bean had the best sound of any pickup- GP 10/78).

  • @mkthddhd I should have said he did not use strat"s or les pauls exclusively the way he used his doug irwin guitars. The travis bean pretty much was his 1976 guitar .The sound he got out of it was cool but the irwin"s i thought gave a much better sound, it was a deeper, and a more full sound...I now know i need to check my post" for mistakes. I stand corrected be cool bro.

  • @coyote023 I liked the Wolf guitar too, after he had the duel sound Dimarzio's put in, it had a great tone; but I never liked the Red ones. I don't know what it was, they just, to my ear, sounded dull. I know it's totally subjective. Maybe it's because I thought he was playing the best, from 76,77 when he had the Bean's through 78, 79 when he went back to the wolf Irwin, I think he lost something after that, both in his playing and his tone. Regardless, I really miss him, he was amazing.

  • @coyote023 Your info is way off. Jerry did use pauls as late as 1971. The Irwin's didn't cost him 40,000 each. try more like 10,000. He also used strats into the start of 1973. and in 88-89 he had a black strat with that Midi you hate so much for when they played space.

  • @setboy1 If you read my post a little slower i said he did not use them EXCLUSIVELY the way he used his doug irwin"s . That black strat with those horrendous midi sounds was not used in "88 but he did use it after the drums for maybe 10 minutes and even that was way to long. Wherever you got the info about his irwins costing $10,000 that was a little off the mark. Do you know how long it took D.I. to make them? One of jerry"s strat"s was given to him by Graham Nash and he used that one for awhil

  • @coyote023 Not a matter of reading slower. it's matter of not reading your other post taking what you had said back. Here is what you said "Garcia never used a les paul and as far as the strat goes he never used them either" What are people supposed to think when you say this other than that you are saying he never used them? If you read Blair Jackson's book it say that tiger cost Garcia $5,800. and rosebud cost $11,000. Those are no where close to $40,000

  • Jerry with a Goldtop. This made my day!!

  • I regret never seeing Jerry Garcia play live. Did he have an awesome stage presence? Anyone out there ever see him play live?

  • @Webdragon22

His stage presence was amazing - a psychedelic sorcerer, a shamanic hipster who entranced his audience. And the fascinating thing was that this contrasted with his demeanor, which was always very humble, not like other rock stars who jump around stage, breaking guitars etc. Honestly, when I first saw him in the seventies, i very clearly remember thinking:this guy is like a sorcerer. I had seen many acts before, but the Dead with Jerry was and always will be unparalleled.

  • Holy shit this video is old! God they sound amazing!

  • Nice (odd?) to see Jerry playin' the Les Paul.

  • Los Lobos rawk. Jerry rawks too. Thanx for posting this. It is totally real and totally great.

  • this is a lot of fun for the shear novelty of seeing Garcia in a small club in '89. Yea, his tone is off a bit and there is a bit of unintended feedback going on here and there but so what. the solo starts out a bit rough then gains a bit of steam then he starts fighting the tone a bit. i have always enjoyed watching him play even if there is an occasional slip or stumble. the guy just rocked...

  • @amdarkstar .....He use to play THE SWEETWATER in San Rafael and THE INN of the BEGINNING in Cotati, Ca...

  • the first time I saw Jerry , he was playing a Les Paul . Closing of the Fillmore West . THis playing with LL is the one and only time I have ever heard him play that I swear if someone had played this for me and asked me who was playing the leaD , I would not have been able to tell you . Jerry sounded very different and I think it was because of the equipment he was using .

  • For all the idiots who love to post, the only problem with the sound I can promise you is the recording or maybe the mix (doubtful). People saying "it sucks" because it's out of tune???Do you any idea how amazing Los lobos are and how many years they have been playing live? They don't play more than a note or two out of tune before fixing it...quickly. This is what Jerry loved best, a break from the Dead stadium shows, and to jam with other great players.

  • Jerry on a gold top Gibson?

  • Sweet.

  • Jerry playing a gold top Les Paul! I miss JG.

  • JERRY & LOS LOBOS PLAYS THE GREAT !

  • ha ha i can almost HEAR suzie Q anyone as old as me

  • someone's outta tune...or in the wrong key....or too high....this sucks

  • Mescal and Mr. Natural acid....

  • How many times do ya get to hear garcia play a les paul? I just got into the bay area the day of this show on an extra long flight and got a little sleep and went over and it was well worth it.The strange thing was when we were leaving garcia was just getting to his car and we commented on his les paul sound and he could not stop laughing and told him we would catch him the next day in oakland.

  • All the shows I've been to, and I missed this one. It had to have been something. Was Jerry unbilled?

  • no that is louie perez playin' drums. the day after this both los lobos and the dead played in oakland and garcia, weir and clarence clemons sat in with john fogerty and his band which blew the deads 2 sets out of the water.

  • is that a corpse playing the drums?

  • @Ronymexico......I thought it was your mom actually

  • actually, deadfreak, my mom is deceased, thanks for remembering, though, ya fuckin asshole

  • @ronymexico ....sorry man.

  • can't say how refreshing it is to finally hear later Garcia on a straight guitar, like in the early days - how can one not miss those sounds?

  • @secoro60 ??? huh

  • you gotta be kidding with this shit? fuck these humps

  • @RonyMexico go back to cubicle

  • where is that?

  • I wonder why he chose to play the les paul guitar instead of one of his signatures.

  • Maybe he didn't bring his guitar with him

  • maybe he hocked it for a dozen enchiladas and a bottle of tequila

  • Just met Conrad a few weeks ago. What a wonderful person. Did any of you hear the rumers in '96 that DH was going to join the Dead at one point?

  • He's just jammin.. great tone, great restraint , he aint gonna go out there and 'compete' with DH & CR. he's just jammin..

try not to analyze and just enjoy the moment, as they were..

  • those pickups are running a muck but garcia pulls the high voltage back into an even running machine..

  • What a special set you have up here! Wish I could have been there for this!

  • Sounds good to me. You try to jump on stage with Los Lobos, unrehearsed. Garcia rocks, so does the Wolf. That's why they like each other and hung, ya know?

How will the wolf survive? Off endangered species list, huh?

  • I'm a major Los Lobos fan and I like Garcia, but these are not his tune. Garcia's playing is a trainwreck.

  • According to David they (at least he) got a little tipsy at this gig. Probably why it sounds a bit off.

Man, I wish they would bring New George's back. It's been sitting there in various "states" for years now.

My studio is just across the street. I walk past it pretty much every day.

  • @JimRichter ......I'm willing to bet that if you were there that night, and had a couple ales in you you would have given Jerry a standing ovation of sorts. I'd be willing to bet you'd be yelling...."Jerry, Jerry !" Typical hypocrite...

  • rock-n-roll will never die....

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • I wonder if Jerry was remembering the Les Paul he played on stage with the Dead in the late 60's? His heavy-on-the-tremolo solo here reminds me of his playing from that period.

  • Very cool to see Jerry working in the moment to explore the Gibson's sound. No, the video sound is not good quality, but to me the energy seems to just crackle and pop.

  • Also this was Mr Garcia's first public playing during his recovery from the diabetic coma that almost killed him. He prett much had to learn to play all over again.

  • Actually, his diabetic coma was in 1986, and he did jam with Los Lobos for his first public appearance after that. However, this performance was three years later. Choice of songs most likely influenced by the AIDS benefit the GD and Fogerty played a couple of days later at the Oakland Coliseum, at which Garcia and Weir backed Forgerty.

  • JG has obviously hit the shooms a bit early this night... Fail!

  • You don't know what the hell you are talking about.

  • wow... that started as one of the least impressive jg solos i've ever heard, but as usual, he saves it! jerry's the man!

  • NO COMPRENDO?? DONNA ES rici QUE LA CANTANO,??

  • A mi me parece una muy buena actuación de Los Lobos un grupo de gran experiencia en el ramo musical mexico americano.

  • There are a lot of dumb people who have access to computers, and just want to blow smoke somewhere. This was Los Lobos and Jerry Garcia jamming on a cover, having some fun. Whatever weakness there is in the sound is due to the quality of the recording. It has a lot of life, which is what music is for. If you have seen John Fogerty lately with his new band, he pretty much phones it in. I wonder how many people who call musicians crappy actually know how to play an instrument, or can read a note.

  • You've said it, eloquently. This is a unique combination of musicians and song.

  • @truegangsteroflove excellent observation,cant put it better!

  • @truegangsteroflove Your comment will be on top always !! I would have paid top dollar to see these music icons perform this live!! What a treat to the to the many fans of Mr. Garcia & the wonderful band Los Lobos...ear candy at its best !!

  • I'd like to hear Fogerty try and play the Grateful Dead. Then maybe we can say Sorry but the GD can't be topped by this pussy version.

This just shows Garcias versatility as guitarist.

  • Thats not Jerry's guitar he borrowed it from Los HA lol.

  • impresentable,horrible.

  • fuck gibson

  • Sorry. Not a fav. Kinda a snoozer. But check out the Foo Fighters cover. (Except they botched the lyrics.)

  • foo fighters blow, how dare they try and do a ccr cover

  • Sorry FOgerty can NOT be topped by this pussy version!

  • it really does not get any cooler, and if for some reason you do not think so,there is not much chance of you ever being cool.

  • whatever you say, oh mighty arbiter of cool. not a great song for Garcia to be jamming on, but what are you going to do.

  • jerry used to play a les paul in the 60s...

  • Where is this? High Sierra Music fest?

  • wow this is great,,,,but chad...ck-out the biker band covering ccrs oh suzie Q....on youtubes ...(eddiecooper369) they really rock the song!!!!!!!

  • Yes you're right about Eddie Cooper's great cover.

  • Dashing to get Rosebud!Delaroan

  • jerry on a les paul? 89'? Killer!

  • @irtimed I know huh? i just noticed your comment was made 2 years ago,but i just found this video now and i thought the same thing! thats a gold top isn't it? i wonder where Jerry's guitar was the custom made SG's?

  • @irtimed

Yea, I caught that too.. he seems none too pleased with his tone by all the the fiddling he's doing with the tone knobs and toggle switch. Jerry would sound like Jerry even if he was playing a kazoo.

  • @Spongybugman Yeah ... it's crazy ... if someone played this and I had no idea what it was, instantly ... INSTANTLY ... two notes into the solo I'd say: "Jerry!"

  • Jerry Garcia is playing a Gibson Les Paul, never seen him playing one before.

  • David Hildago has a beard here, never seen that before.

  • is good

  • nobody can sing this song like a young john fogerty, nobody.

  • I'd much rather see a band like Los Lobos with a great like Garcia cover this; rather than hear Fogerty scream like a maniac into the microphone.

  • I sooooooo agree with you on that one.

  • thank you so much for posting this! Jerry has a HUGE smile the first 30 seconds or so.

  • Comment removed

  • i think you may be mistaken

  • How cool to see JG playing a Les Paul!!

  • Vintage....Jerry's riff is classic as is his dash of the stage at the end...Love the video...Thx...

  • good good, but, not as good as the oringinal credence..

  • nice jerry nice........

  • thank you so much for this great post! love it! (only wish Q was longer!) hey! can't really complain tho ; ) 5 stars & faved! Thanks jabfela!

  • hey!..cass:))hope you're fine.... never get enough vids from you....

  • Thanks so much for posting!! Long time deadhead who fell in love with Los Lobos in the early 90's. Never knew of this collaboration! WOW - Thanks again!
