@nicky2069 Acutally the National Economic Development Authority NEDA planned developmental centers in Davao Cebu and I think Negros so that the people would not be enticed to go to Manila. Urban sprawl was planned that is why we had these regional centers. The problem is as in any other cities in the world, people like to go to the exciting cities. manila long time ago was considered the paris of the east too but we dont need those titles because METRO MANILA as a whole is the 14th best skyline in the world be optimistic and at least we all want to gain back the glory to be now not just one of asia's best but one of the world's best by the use of GMA and for all of you to know marcos has the most projects a president did after GMA but he is the smartest of all and greatest!?
@joesel19 - great comment especailly the one"...considered to be the Paris of the East"
and also thanks for giving credit to Marcos, people still think N.Aquino did anything for Filipinos except derail our progress under the guidance of Marcos and the U.S. govt. before! We would acutally still be no.3 if not for s.korea surpassing us as the u.s. aided them more after marcos was ousted and the 2 u.s. miltiary bases were removed, we failed Marcos&the u.s. we shud have just listen to Marcos B4

Technically, it is the fault of the Japanese that Manila is the way it is today. By conquering the Philippines and refusing to relinquish it to Allied forces despite imminent defeat, the Japanese forced the Americans to pound it with bomber raids and artillery and fight house to house combat until every block was demolished. This left Manila the second most devastated city in WWII, Warsaw in Poland being the first. Then try rebuilding an entire city with almost no war reparations.
You are not serious. Anglo-Saxons are a destructive race. There was no need for them to drop bombs on Hamburg, Dresden, Berlin, Caen, Guam, Manila, Nagsaki, etc.
If by "no need" you mean to cripple the war production and industry of the Axis powers by eliminating the factories and/or military infrastructure that was purposely built near civilian centers to dissuade Allied bombing... then yes.
C'mon man, by calling the Anglo-Saxons an intrinsically destructive race you are no better than those who claim Filipino's are a lazy and unproductive people.
They were not bombing weapon factories but civilian houses, etc. In France the Germans destroyed next to nothing. The Allied Forces (UK and US) brought havoc to some cities. In the Philippines, the Japanese destroyed next to nothing. The US forces did, etc.
True, the Allies eventually succumbed to the temptation of "terror bombing" as the Germans had been doing for many years until the Luftwaffe was rendered impotent, but this was to break the spirit of the Axis war machine which was, let's face it, the civilians. Especially in Nazi Germany and Japan, generations had been so indoctrinated by their regimes that they were ready to defend their homelands till the last man, woman and child. Hitler had his scorched-earth policy and so did Imperial Japan
The destruction of host cities such as Manila was largely due to the Japanese entrenchment in the city among civilians. They had been essentially cut-off from the bulk of their forces and left to die in the Philippines, thus making their last stand one they were unwilling to surrender alive from. This prompted the Allies to bomb the fuck out of everything instead of jeopardizing troops on the ground. Was it a questionable call? Yes. Did it win the war with fewer lives lost? Yes.
the allied forces did not conduct terror tactics. Unlike the germans. they invented the V1's and V2 rockets that bombed england. Those weapons were used to terrorize england.
yes the germans did not destroy anything... i guess the holocaust is a myth right. and the rape of nanking is fabricated... its ok to pick sides, obviously you like the axis... Allied forces kicked their ass...
Wake up, Fuzz461, we are talking about the bombing of cities by Anglo-Saxons. Even if you are offended by this historical fact, you cannot deny it. Distorting what I said is not very honest, is it?
I am very much awake and I am not offended. You are entitled to your own beliefs and I am entitled to mine. As for the Japanese not destroying buildings, well... they destroyed Filipino lives during the war. Bombing cities cannot be avoided during war, specially in the old days. There were no smart weapons back then. And yes, lets not distort facts. Krauts and japs started the war. The Anglo-saxons (USA) finished it.

Stupid Music companies that poisoned Youtube. They must be glad because someone loves their work and decided to create a dramatic scene with this historical video
ABS-CBN, THE MOST CORRUPTED TV STATION IN D PHILIPPINES!!!!
Capitalism destroyed Manila, obvioulsy they had such a perfect infrastructure, city planning, and transportation, Manila had many one of the first in Asia, Universites, Stadium, colliseum, Rail system, museum, zoo etc. Manila was the Paris of Asia. Until everyone got all greedy. :(
Uso kasi satin is yung mga koneksyon... Nararnasan ko kasi to.. =/
after the war, US and Japan gave millions of dollars for manila's rehabilitation. the roxas administration forced US government to give Philippines independence on July 4, 1946. independence was not their real intention, but on how to benefit for the millions of dollars. once independent from US, the US can't do anything with the Filipinos corrupt government. Philippines should have been still a part of US like Puerto Rico and Hawaii
You're forgetting about the Parity Agreement , the forced Japan-Philippines Peace Treaty, and that even Pres. Truman had sent an investigation to figure out how much was the damage done to the Philippines. The damages done to the Philippines during the war was 6 to 8 billion dollars according to the US estimates. But in the end the Philippines only received rehabilitation 4 billion dollars and all of it was tied to American trading rights and keeping the currency artificially low.
Maganda talaga yung Manila noon, parang San Francisco.
And manila looked very decent then. It's like you're in the states. Manila looks very rich unlike now, where you see the face of poverty everywhere in manila. There had been a drastic change on how Manila is then and now.
Know what guys? I felt sad when I watched the video.. I hope i was born back at those times when the Philippines is the second richest nation in Asia.. There are a lot of corrupt politicians in the Phils.. I'm wondering when it will end..
The only reason the Japanese destroyed Manila/Philippines was because of AMERICANS. The Americans built military bases in the Philippines forcing the Japanese to attack it. Back in the days, Philippines was the second richest country in Asia second to the Japanese. Now it is one of the poorest. Thanks America, you bitch.
the japan should be blame because they destroy manila in ww2 but the biggest blame should be in our own politicians because they dont do anything to restore the old glory of manila they are so busy on stealing our people's money. the philippines can be great once again if we only stop this "corruption"!. but i am not losing hope that i will see the philippines great once again.
actually it was the americans who really destroyed manila. in order to flush out the japs they used the carpet bombing strategy with the addition of flame throwers held by foot soldiers, but i strongly agree with your second statement!
SMB was founded 1888 and during the pre-wwII era, it was already a force to be reckoned with! hehe most Filipinos may not know it, but SMB is one of the best tasting beer there is in the world!
Ang ganda ganda naman ng Manila noon! Sana ganyan pa rin ngayon...with the trams and all! Anu po title nung second song after the soundtrack ng "Fallout" game?
This is a wonderful visual record of the beauty of Manila prior to the war. Manila is still such a beautiful city even today with all its history. Too bad its city leaders don't give a rats.I miss being in Maynila, especially Intramuros.
comitern, this makes you want to cry. Actual it did. I dont mean to be sentimental or anything but its nice to know how beautiful is manila before and thinking what we could do to revive it today.

manila long time ago was considered the paris of the east too but we dont need those titles because METRO MANILA as a whole is the 14th best skyline in the world be optimistic and at least we all want to gain back the glory to be now not just one of asia's best but one of the world's best by the use of GMA and for all of you to know marcos has the most projects a president did after GMA but he is the smartest of all and greatest!?
joesel19 1 year ago
@joesel19 - great comment especailly the one"...considered to be the Paris of the East"
and also thanks for giving credit to Marcos, people still think N.Aquino did anything for Filipinos except derail our progress under the guidance of Marcos and the U.S. govt. before! We would acutally still be no.3 if not for s.korea surpassing us as the u.s. aided them more after marcos was ousted and the 2 u.s. miltiary bases were removed, we failed Marcos&the u.s. we shud have just listen to Marcos B4

The cars drive on the right. How come somebody told me the traffic used to be on the left in the Philippines?
Qcumber 2 years ago
Technically, it is the fault of the Japanese that Manila is the way it is today. By conquering the Philippines and refusing to relinquish it to Allied forces despite imminent defeat, the Japanese forced the Americans to pound it with bomber raids and artillery and fight house to house combat until every block was demolished. This left Manila the second most devastated city in WWII, Warsaw in Poland being the first. Then try rebuilding an entire city with almost no war reparations.
quicksmack 2 years ago
You are not serious. Anglo-Saxons are a destructive race. There was no need for them to drop bombs on Hamburg, Dresden, Berlin, Caen, Guam, Manila, Nagsaki, etc.
Qcumber 2 years ago
If by "no need" you mean to cripple the war production and industry of the Axis powers by eliminating the factories and/or military infrastructure that was purposely built near civilian centers to dissuade Allied bombing... then yes.
C'mon man, by calling the Anglo-Saxons an intrinsically destructive race you are no better than those who claim Filipino's are a lazy and unproductive people.
quicksmack 2 years ago
They were not bombing weapon factories but civilian houses, etc. In France the Germans destroyed next to nothing. The Allied Forces (UK and US) brought havoc to some cities. In the Philippines, the Japanese destroyed next to nothing. The US forces did, etc.
Qcumber 2 years ago
True, the Allies eventually succumbed to the temptation of "terror bombing" as the Germans had been doing for many years until the Luftwaffe was rendered impotent, but this was to break the spirit of the Axis war machine which was, let's face it, the civilians. Especially in Nazi Germany and Japan, generations had been so indoctrinated by their regimes that they were ready to defend their homelands till the last man, woman and child. Hitler had his scorched-earth policy and so did Imperial Japan
quicksmack 2 years ago
The destruction of host cities such as Manila was largely due to the Japanese entrenchment in the city among civilians. They had been essentially cut-off from the bulk of their forces and left to die in the Philippines, thus making their last stand one they were unwilling to surrender alive from. This prompted the Allies to bomb the fuck out of everything instead of jeopardizing troops on the ground. Was it a questionable call? Yes. Did it win the war with fewer lives lost? Yes.
quicksmack 2 years ago
the allied forces did not conduct terror tactics. Unlike the germans. they invented the V1's and V2 rockets that bombed england. Those weapons were used to terrorize england.
fuzz461 2 years ago
yes the germans did not destroy anything... i guess the holocaust is a myth right. and the rape of nanking is fabricated... its ok to pick sides, obviously you like the axis... Allied forces kicked their ass...
fuzz461 2 years ago
Wake up, Fuzz461, we are talking about the bombing of cities by Anglo-Saxons. Even if you are offended by this historical fact, you cannot deny it. Distorting what I said is not very honest, is it?
Qcumber 2 years ago
I am very much awake and I am not offended. You are entitled to your own beliefs and I am entitled to mine. As for the Japanese not destroying buildings, well... they destroyed Filipino lives during the war. Bombing cities cannot be avoided during war, specially in the old days. There were no smart weapons back then. And yes, lets not distort facts. Krauts and japs started the war. The Anglo-saxons (USA) finished it.
fuzz461 2 years ago
As regards Europe, isn't it France and Great-Britain that declared war to Germany on the 3rd of September 1939?

I dont know who declared war first. I maybe wrong but I think WW2 started when the germans invaded poland.

God bless R.P.!

after the war, US and Japan gave millions of dollars for manila's rehabilitation. the roxas administration forced US government to give Philippines independence on July 4, 1946. independence was not their real intention, but on how to benefit for the millions of dollars. once independent from US, the US can't do anything with the Filipinos corrupt government. Philippines should have been still a part of US like Puerto Rico and Hawaii
cosmoduffgordon 3 years ago
You're forgetting about the Parity Agreement , the forced Japan-Philippines Peace Treaty, and that even Pres. Truman had sent an investigation to figure out how much was the damage done to the Philippines. The damages done to the Philippines during the war was 6 to 8 billion dollars according to the US estimates. But in the end the Philippines only received rehabilitation 4 billion dollars and all of it was tied to American trading rights and keeping the currency artificially low.

Maganda talaga yung Manila noon, parang San Francisco.
