After nearly 12 years in captivity, he broke through the glass panes of the tank's viewing windows. The tank lost almost all water and Hugo's nose was chopped off. The park's veterinarian sewed it back on... but it was too late. Hugo had suffered extreme brain damage. Just weeks later, in March of 1980, he and Lolita were squeaking, when she leaped onto the platform and suddenly starting attacking trainers. Meanwhile, Hugo bashed his head against the concrete wall and killed himself.

They know what they are doing! If they knew something was wrong with the whale they would do whatever they could do to help it. Lolita has been in that tank since she was 6, and now she is 41. She is very healty. So obviously its not bothering her. So stop making videos that arent gonna do anything.

she may look very healthy, but you cant help but feel sorry for her, shes spend over 30 years in a place where she can only float around. how boring! and not even a friend to accompany her...imagine living on a fullsized bed ALONE for over 30 years...

so if someone stuffs you in a 5 foot room with no other humans to talk to, and just came and fed you and made you do tricks every day ( remember Lolita does not get 'time off'. no weekends for her). Then if you were still alive in 30 years you think it wouldnt be 'bothering you'. This is an intelligent animal, she can learn to play with a ball so she can re-learn to hunt fish. Its all about money, she makes Mr Hertz a lot of money.Poor lolita must be soooo bored.

ever heard of war....you are so sure it couldnt happen to you. That is because we are humans , we think we own the earth, we think we can do what we like to other beings. It does not make it right. Where on earth do you live that you can be that sure that someone bigger and stronger will not just take it all away.Talk to people in places that have war, they know how quickly our freedom can be taken.And if they want to stuff you in a room , they will. You have your freedom, Lolita doesn't.

I am not in any place that there is war. So i dont think anyones gonna be stuffin be in a room... She is a whale, she is fine in that tank. I am not saying that she shouldnt have a bigger tank, i am just saying that they shouldnt let her free because once a whale in captivity you cant just let it go. They will expect someone to feed them and no ones there. They will die out there one their own. And i never said i think i own the earth.

I am glad that you at least thought about war. You don't have it now...you are very lucky.We have taken Lolita from her natural environment, from her family,we could do that because we are stronger , back in the 60's it was ok to do this, like keeping lions in cages at circuses. It is now our responsibility to return these animals to a better life. It is our fault and we need to fix it. There are many celebrities saying they will help if Lolita is placed in a sea pen. Surely we owe her that!

I am not saying that she dosent deserve a bigger tank. I just don't think that she should not be set into the wild! She will have to learn everything all over again, and by the time she learns it she won't have long of a life left to live.

I bet half the people saying "this is sick" have pets, they have CAPTIVE dogs, cats, birds, or whatever. and I bet those pets know tricks or have been trained to do things or act a certain way, and i bet they also love their owners very much. I think that if animals are treated with the respect and caring they deserve then they are happy to do things with and for people they love and trust. just like any one would, human or animal.

Lolita is more intelligent than a family pet.Domestic pets are born into their life and know nothing different,in fact I doubt they have been taught any survival skills from their parents. Lolita was born in the sea, she had years with her mother teaching her how to survive and catch fish. She learns new 'behaviours'at MSQ so she could re-learn how to hunt fish.Orcas also live in family units so the lack of Orca company is cruel.She earns MSQ a lot of money, thats what Mr Hertz loves..not Lolita

How do you know he dosent love lolita? That's like me saying that you don't love your pet! We don't have all the dogs in captivity. There are wild dogs out there that need to know how to hunt. She is told old to learn how to hunt again. Once she gets it, she will be to old. Maybe Lolita dosent love Mr. Hertz, but i am sure she would do anything to save her trainer. They have special bonds, and she will be so sad without her. So just LEAVE HER ALONE!!!

Yes she would be sad without her trainer,they have bonds but not like she would have with a Boy-Orca in the sea. If she was given a choice...a sea pen with Orcas to talk to, a chance at having a mate and a baby.....or swimming in a concrete pool with humans that don't speak Orca and the night hours alone?? There are many celebrities working this year to get a seapen for Lolita and to help her re-learn to catch fish. Mr Hertz could still make money off her if people came to see her in the sea ...

How do you know that if she was given a choice she would go back to the sea? She might love it with her trainer. She might not even want to re-learn how to fish! She might like that fact that she dosent have to hunt. I never said that she dosnt deserve a bigger tank. She should, but she shouldnt be released into the sea.

Um, do you keep your dog in a small kennel and never let it out?? The tank is too small period. And if the orca had a chance to stay with a trainer or go with other orcas, it would go with other orcas. Killer whales are not "man's best friend", nor are they supposed to be domesticated. They are WAY to big of a creature. They wouldn't keep an elephant in that small of an enclosure. Its disgusting. I was going to go there to visit until I read about the horrors. Now it just sickens me.

I live down here in Miami and I've been there a few times and let me tell you, it's pretty out of date.

It's unfortunate because I don't think Lolita could survive in the wild anymore, they need to build her a much bigger tank.
