I lived in Lake Charles 1986-1990 so this brought some stuff back for me. I lived near I210 and traveled it often. Lake Charles has a bunch of casinos now and I caught a glimpse of them in the video. Thanks for the video.
For people interested in Lake Charles, the view from the freeway doesn't really show all that there is... They have a great downtown, some nice casinos, lots of shopping, great restaurants, etc. I think Lake Charles is a very overlooked place.
That's my city!!! @sourlemon83 POPEYE'S FRIED CHICKEN??? PLEASE!!! There are SO MANY BETTER PLACES than Popeye's!!! Gah, go somewhere LOCAL and get some GOOD CAJUN HOMEMADE FOOD!!! Yes, it's still "restaurant," but it has homemade qualities - Cotten's Famous Hamburgers, Dairy Barn, Jo's Creole Creations, Big L's Soul Food . . .
For all the people that aren't from the south, any areas that seem flooded or recently flooded is marsh or swamp, very common here in Louisiana, and if you're visiting, make sure to get some Popeyes fried chicken! Mmmmm!
Really enjoy your videos, Jim. Just recently discovered them. Seeing that you filmed Lake Charles, I sure wish you would've done Beaumont and Waco on your swing through Texas.
@254reno Thanks, I drove through both Waco & Beaumont but did not see road through them as interesting enough to film. Lake Charles had two large bridges I could get within one video, I generally don't films roads or places for the sake of it, there has to be something of interest for me to film it.
Nice, looks humid btw. Does the speed drop much on the bridge? It looks like you slowed down a fair bit. Just as reference, I notice much of the NE U.S, especially in the older areas have similar bridges that have been incorporated to later freeway structures except with the snow, ice and salt their condition seems far worse than any of the bridges in the SE I have been on.
@vaughanweather The speed drops from 60 to 50 for the bridge I believe. I've noticed the same thing with several bridges in the northeast as well. Only two in NYC (The Verrazano and Throgs Neck) were built as part of the Interstate system.
Just wanted to add that off I-210 there are lots of things, like McNeese State University, Prien Lake Mall, Laberge du Lac Casino Resort, and so much more (actually that is where the city is). Entering Lake Charles just off I-10 there is the Isle of Capri Casino & Hotel and the Civic Center & Boardwalk (downtown).
@Freewayjim One thing I feel you missed out on is the sections of freeway on US 90 between Lafayette in New Orleans. The one from Morgan City to Raceland in particular would have made a great video. Also, I-49 has no engineering highlights, but great scenery. I'm from Shreveport, where you might have enjoyed the I-220 bridge over Cross Lake. My late grandparents' house was demolished to build that bridge back in the 70s.
Always nice to see the old route I took to drive from Houston to Birmingham. Hated the bridges in Lake Charles and Baton Rouge as both were old then . Thank you for another great video.
Charming smaller metro freeway system. The wasteful suburban planner in me suggests that the southern segments of I-210 could be developed with antiquated frontage roads and regional shopping centers.
Nice! I get to drive down there every so often, most of the time to gamble ;), so I'm pretty familiar with this loop. (I'm from Beaumont, btw.) Nice to see one of my favorite road warriors so close to home.
Welcome to my state Jim, Lake Charles' bridges are something behold. The tall median wall on I-210 is a surprise to me despite having traveled that route several times. As a child riding across the I-10 bridge actually spooked me mostly due to how narrow it is....thinking back on that makes me chuckle now.
Great song! Considering that I've driven I-10 thru Lake Charles, I-210 was pretty much what I had expected, except for that very neat bridge. That tall median wall barrier, right before the right...yikes.
For some odd reason, I don't remember the I-10 Bridge at all, even though I recognize everything else along I-10 in the city. Strange how the memory works (or doesn't work), sometimes.
@FreewayBrent -Thanks, I'll be honest, I was expecting a little more from I-210 but at least the bridge is pretty neat, at least my curiosity is cured and the road is clinched.
Before you go on the Lake Charles bridge on I-10, there is "Isle Of Capri" casino on your right. Get off on Westlake Dr. (Exit 27) I play at the arcades while my dad gambles.

I've always wondered what the Lake Charles area looked like. Nice antiquated freeways -- gotta love 'em (or hate 'em). :-)
Nice vid, Jim.

Nice tour. The bridges are interesting, quite narrow. Lake Charles is probably one of the smallest cities with a loop like that.
