  • how tall are you? Just wanna get a good idea because ive heard this thing is huge

  • did that sword come false edged?

  • @britishfetishman101 i believe they come unsharpened from the maker, but I don't own this one and it was sharpened, though not well, when I saw it.

  • An-dur-il.

    Not An-drool.

    An-dur-il. Flame of the West.

Yes, I'm a LOTR Nazi. Blame my best friend for NOT allowing me to PASS when I wanted to step away from simply walking into Mordor.

  • his name is anduril not andruil

  • Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!Allah akbar!

  • Hey Tom, I'm thinking of picking up one of these, or the DSA Ranger sword. I recently posted a review of the DSA 14th century, but I still haven't gotten to try an Atrim or Albion. Someday, I guess.

  • @Jeeperrandy Randy, buddy you need to move away from these silly DSA crowbars and try out a real sword. in fact, why don't you email me (look for a PM) and we can talk about how we can maybe get a review going so you can try out a real sword.

  • that is not the real one it does not have the gold parts on it and you messed up the grip

  • @zacmon98 ummm the real one is a movie prop, so no this isn't it. I did not mess up the grip. do you have any idea what you are talking about?

  • @Ianflaer u obviously don't he means the real one as in the licensed one by united cutlery it has gold in the holes and goes for 300+ unlike urs one that prob went for 150+

  • @entts I had no idea what this sword sells for so I looked it up. 150+? try 150+305 and that is before some of the custom work this sword had down to it. United Cutlery may have the license to produce the official movie replica but they are not making a quality weapon. not even close. this sword, though I found it inadequate is a better sword that anything I have ever seen from UC. Just because they put gold paint in the holes doesn't mean the sword they made is worth $300 or more. YMMV

  • @Ianflaer It's actually 24k gold in the handguard (which is plated silver) also the sizing is wrong on this sword, it looks to me as if its about 34" whereas the real Anduril is 40.5" (also made from 420J2) however none of that matters because personally I'd rather have my handforged 1138 Damascus steel blade in my hand.

  • @fatboybozo Rule #1 of modern reproduction swords: if it is made from stainless steel it is a wall-hanger sword-like-object. UC may be making an item that more closely resembles the movie prop, but this item more closely resembles a sword. I like swords, not props. and if we want to really go there, the movies are a cheap imitation of the books and so far as I recall Tolkien never specified either the exact look or dimensions of this sword so I'm ok with makers making their own.

  • @fatboybozo however, thank you for politely inputting your information. I hope you don't take my response as an attack or even snarky, it was not intended that way. I certainly agree with your opinion about preferring a hand made pattern welded blade to a stainless steel prop. Christian Fletcher has produced some swords that are sort of an interpretation of this sword also and unless the sword is of that quality I'm not much interested. his were modded ATrims or Albions. I like that

  • @Ianflaer I think we can both come to the conclusion that they would be useless in an actual combat situation; which is why I would always opt for hand made (and I'll always go for the traditionally made ones (I'm not sure what it is about it, it feels like its holding tradition.) because I reckon that the techniques used when swords were actually the height of military tech are probably more reliable and trustworthy than modern techniques that are coined due to peoples hobbies)).

  • @fatboybozo I know people who study these things, and your gut instinct is pretty much spot-on correct if you think from a design perspective. Swords were tapered and sized and weighted very effectively to be deadly weapons. where most modern makers go wrong is by seeing the swords in only 2 dimensions. you don't have to use a hammer and anvil to make good quality medieval swords but you do need to follow medieval design principles. course there's something special about hand work

  • Not sure if large man, or small sword.

  • @Bertziethegreat yup, I'm a big boy. this sword is in no way small.

  • That guy laughs like a fucking goat lmao

  • is the performance of this weapon as great as a katana?

  • @MrMetalwolf08 now there's a loaded question! seriously there is such a large difference in performance between katana that I could say that any sword performs as well as a katana if I'm comparing them to a bad katana. there are band-width of performance with all things, especially swords no matter what type they are. Katana and European swords are different with different focuses but in general yes, most swords perform as well as a katana of similar quality. there in lies the rub however.

  • I think the handle and blade should be longer. At least in the movie, the blade looks a lot longer. I want a fully functional replica of that sword, but I dont know...im uneasy about buying a replica that isnt completely accurate.

  • @LotusDragon09 It's a 12 inch handle and 36 inch blade, trust me thats a big sword and I have one about that size and im 6 ft tall. This is the only full functional replica and made by a manufacturer known for there durability. Plus its got some serious cutting power because of its weight, the version seen here is not sharpened.

  • @madax132 Its still not exactly the same size as the "real" one though. Even watching the movie you can tell that it isnt the same size. It still looks like a nice sword, dont get me wrong. I just wish there was a functional replica that looked -exactly- like in the movie. You could probably even nitpick about the blade shape. But since this is the only functional replica for the sword, shorter blade or not, I suppose it still gets more points than those stainless steel ones.

  • @LotusDragon09 I'd say it definitely gets more points than the stainless steel, it's a REAL lord of the rings sword, I mean how much more epic can you feel slicing into to stuff with the sword of your favorite hero, besides the movie version isn't set in stone and this is a damned good one, have you ever owned a sword? I'm telling you a 36 inch blade is really, really long and the blade is hugely built not just in length. If your looking for a replica this is the best hands down.

  • @madax132 Yes, I do own swords. We just have different preferences it seems, especially considering im 7 inches shorter than you...which kind of makes it a bit funny. For a European style sword, 36 inches seems rather typical so calling it big suggests that a normal longsword was a lot smaller, though im not an expert on European swords. Now a historical zweihander, THATS a big sword. Ill admit it may seem bigger once I hold it (DSA Anduril). Btw, my favorite character was Gandalf ;).

  • @LotusDragon09 Madmax132 makes a good point that this sword is rather large. not only that but this sword is rather heavy too. the main problem with making functional swords out of movie props is that the people who design movie sword generally know nothing about how to make a functional sword. there's a lot more to it than it would seem. in order to make a movie sword functional usually compromises must be made. there's a lot more to a functional sword than carbon vs. stainless steel too.

  • @Ianflaer So youre saying that increasing the blade size may have negative impacts on its performance? There are plenty of really large sword out there, but im sure they are specifically made for that. Correct me if im wrong, but if the DSA Anduril were to be the same size as the movie sword, its blade shape (and a few other things I imagine) may be slightly different due to the necessary compromises, as you mentioned? I could understand that.

  • @LotusDragon09 yes, if it is not done very carefully. in order to make this sword bigger it would have to be completely redesigned. simply growing it longer and/or wider would be a bad thing. making a big sword is a lot harder than making a smaller one. it is way harder to get everything balanced out properly. I'm sure that a replica of Anduril COULD be made to size but it would be difficult and unreasonably expensive. it's all about compromise and finding balance.

  • @madax132 this sword was sharpened, though I understand that usually these are shipped blunt.

  • @Ianflaer I've seen a sharpened version cutting, so frankly i find that hard to believe. Also he said in the description that with a lot of edge work it would cut through better edge work meaning sharpening.

  • @madax132 by "he" you mean me. I wrote that, and that's me cutting. this sword was sharpened, but it was done poorly (I didn't sharpen it) the edges were very thick due to the geometry of the sword, meaning that it would take a LOT of work to improve the edge. I could sharpen a 90 degree angle to the point of being impressively sharp but you still couldn't cut well with it because of the wide angle trying to spread the target. this sword is poorly designed from a performance perspective.

  • @Ianflaer So you're saying a poorly sharpened sword cuts poorly? That should be a bit obvious, however I've cut with a friends and found it to be very impressive when sharpened properly as far as cutting goes and I don't have the best form so I'm pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the geometry. Hell even the castile signature series cut worse than this when it wasn't sharpened well and that's an angus trim designed blade.

  • @madax132 there's a lot more to a good sword than a good edge, but a bad edge certainly messes things up fast. admittedly, I'm pretty picky about sword performance. there's nothing wrong with liking DSA swords, I just don't find them to my tastes. Gus may have designed Castile but the forge didn't follow his design and they hosed it up pretty good if you ask me. I own several ATrims and have seen more than most people and I can tell you the Castile is nothing like a real ATrim. not even close.

  • @Ianflaer Sure but it is an angus trim designed blade so there was certainly nothing wrong with the blade geometry yet cut poorly when sharpened poorly, I mean there was nothing structurally wrong with it just not sharpened. Honestly if it can cut tatami this good poorly sharpened I don't see it as a bad cutting sword. Nice to have a back and forth on YT without having someone call me a ******* ***** *****. . . well you get the point.

  • @madax132 I'll just say that once I started using higher end swords like Albions and especially ATrims I lost any interest I had in lesser swords. there really is a huge world of difference and like I said, I'm picky so to each is own is fine here, I'm sure you'll love you DSA when it comes. and as far as not getting called names on Y'tube, yes it is very nice and thank you for that by the way, but I expected such good conduct from a fellow SBG member. the castile uses a great sword pommel. . .

  • @Ianflaer I'm sure there is a difference being the great gap in money but i can buy the improved versions for sub 300 off KOA with a decent scabbard which I don't care much about anyway. I actually was really happy with the DSA gothic which Paul seems to like in terms of handling and durability and the guardian will be here in a few days. At the point in my sword collecting now DSA is perfect because it provides decent handling good durability and cutting and to me amazing aesthetics.

  • @Ianflaer Also you have some good videos on here and triedandtrue armory and your friend really seems to like his kaze lol.

  • @madax132 thank you. I've been having fun with this. yeah we liked the kaze because I made it super sharp. The kaze has some serious issues in the tsuka construction and fit and finish but in handling it is really good and in edge retention it is better than average.

  • @Ianflaer Yeah, I'm a bit conflicted though lol the two places I trust most both give very conflicting opinions, KOA and SBG.

  • @madax132 I would trust the opinions on SBG over KOA. honestly the Kaze does not compete with the other swords in its price range anymore and I really cannot recommend it. I'll say this and only this in its favor: the two I had moved and had a feel to them that was better than any other sword in its weight range. it isn't a terrible sword and some of its features are very nice but its deficiencies outweigh its positive features.

  • i brought the witch king sword which is just over 54 inchs and im not that tall so its not the easiest thing to use

  • This is the unsharpened version?

  • It's not Andruil, it's Anduril.

  • @tippytop7 funny that my spell checker didn't catch that.

  • @Ianflaer Yet you still set Andruil in the video :p.

  • @tippytop7 its actually Andúril

  • I'm still surprised why people on you-tube continue to insulted people behind the safety of there PC.You watch something that somebody took the effort to make, and there thanks comes from trying to hurt the uploaders feelings.Simple thanks seems to much too ask nowadays. Anyway,I have a question about this sword;you said that this is not a sword you can recommend;are there any manufactures that do get your high level standards? Are there movie/anime/fantasy swords that are like the real thing?

  • @toydigger thanks man, it is one of those human mysteries as to why I guess. anyway when it comes to swords I CAN recommend there are many: Hanwei Tinker line swords (all of them) and Valiant Armoury Atrim and signature lines, and if you want to go up in price ATrim (from Triedandtruearmory web site), and Arms and Armor. but none of these makers make movie swords. there are very few movie/anime/fantasy swords that are even possible to make into decent swords because of inherent design flaws

  • @toydigger take a look at Fable Blades. They have some nice looking fantasy style swords, and a plus is that he uses high carbon steel, and not stainless. if you come across a sword that's stainless of any kind, it's only for show. a wallhanger.

  • @devildroid667 good point Brendan makes some fantastic swords. I have had the pleasure of sharpening a few of them and I was quite impressed by what I saw back then and his work is getting better with every project he does. however, he does not work cheap. cheap for custom work perhaps but not what a guy of my finances can call cheap.

  • @Ianflaer i ran across a vid here on youtube of someone doing a cutting test with one of the blades from dark sword. when i took a look at the website the cool factor went up. fantasy swords, and not some cheap replicas. i'm put off a little by the weights on some of them though.

  • @devildroid667

I agree with you that their weights are a problem, however, there are not a lot of good fantasy swords out there and probably none in this price range that are properly made swords.

if you want to have a fantasy sword that is much closer to being a properly made sword I would suggest fable blades or John Lundemo of Odin Blades, oh and Mad Dwarf Workshop (since they made the sword of Hiemedal -tippytop7 can check my spelling- for the movie Thor)

  • @Ianflaer i've already taken a look at Mad Dwarf, i like how they set up that wood splitter, or what seems to be one at least. Odin Blades is a new one to me. i'll have to take a look. i really like that dwarven miner knife on Mad Dwarfs site.

  • why is it always fat guys testing these things?

  • @knavia1234 does my being fat somehow invalidate anything I have done or do you just want to insult me for no good reason? I'm not up here demonstrating an incredible new health program and I'll bet that if we got together to spar and or cut you'd realize pretty fast that I know what I'm doing with a sword. belly or no belly I still have 20 years of experience with swordsmanship. trust me if it were easy to lose this belly I'd be skinny and trim. don't be an asshole.

  • @Ianflaer yeah people are assholes and don't know how we got to where we are.

I'm sure your story is sad enough so I won't tell mine, let's just say I went down another road than food addiction after it...

  • @knavia1234 cause skinny pussies cant handle a heavy sword

  • why the say andruil its anduril

  • I'm selling the helm of sauron, and the gauntlet of sauron united cutlery, both brand new, and in mint condition on ebay. My ebay id is dpope2011

  • nice i hope to get Anduril in the future just because its a very similar to the real one but sorry to get technical but Andúril is pronounced my alot of people like Ahn-dur-il.

    either way is fine though.

  • united cutlery LOTR swords are rat tail tang Sword like objects

  • @xxwes997xx true but this one is a DSA, and while I am not a big fan of DSA swords, they are certainly full tanged fully functional swords. some people love them and I can see why, even though this one is not really my cup of tea.

  • @Ianflaer i know, i was responding to someone who asked about the United Cutlery ones. DSA one is a beast.

  • @xxwes997xx yes it is. sorry I missed what you were referring to

  • @Ianflaer no prob. someone was just questioning the UC swords "quality" put simply. there is no "quality" tis a piece of shit over priced wall hanger :P anything over 50$ would be too much for one

  • @Ianflaer Yes, Also the United Cutlery ones are Stainless steel, and that is a no-no as well.

Just wondering, but why do you not care for DSA? Is it anything in Particular?

  • @TheFoundersWereRight well, it depends on what it is you want in a sword. for my tastes DSA are too heavy, over built, and generally not really sword-like in that they don't handle like the swords of history. for my tastes there is no sword better that ATrims. check out the triedandtruarmory webpage to see some ATrims. that's the only place on the web to get them. the guy who makes them really knows his stuff and has studied swords and swordsmanship for decades. DSA not so much.

  • @Ianflaer Yes. However, They are built extremely well, and as far as hand forged swords go, they do have some extremely accurate copies of historical swords taken from actual pieces in museums. I have looked at some of The Angus Trims, and I do prefer a bit beefier blade. Aside from that though, the DSA's are like that for a reason, mainly because when they got started the swords were meant for live steel reinactment, not just cutting. Thanks for the quick response.

  • @TheFoundersWereRight I think I'll just disagree with you on the DSA having extremely accurate copies of historical swords part but there's no need for us to argue over it. you are correct DSA started as a stage steel company. there are a lot of people who love DSA swords, I'm just not one of them.

  • @Ianflaer Thats fine. I have no Problem there, and I am aware that the blades are thicker and so forth and so on. Personally, I have looked at some of theirs and compared them to some I've seen in Museums. The biggest issue for me with DSA before was they did not Peen their pommels, That has been Rectified. In any case, Looking at their blades, except for the fantasy ones, the designs stick pretty close to historical ones, as referenced by Oakshott standards.

  • @TheFoundersWereRight no problems here either, if you like them then you're a lucky man because you have found the thing that works for you. they aren't right for me and that's ok too. thank you for being such a reasonable guy. I'm glad to have you here on my channel. I wish the rest of Youtubers could be so polite. I pretty much say the same thing in my response to your PM but I figure the public here could stand to see to fellas disagreeing politely. might be a good example for them.

  • @Ianflaer Not a Problem man. I do doubt that most people on Youtube that cause problems will receive a change of heart reading this, but one can only hope. I am also used to people on here who at the slightest hint of a differing opinion from someone else go into full personal attack mode. It really is a Shame. I have had some run ins on here that were not great, and in which I stood up to the person attacking me. That is life though, not just Youtube.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheJoe999Man no, not at all. that was tatami cutting. no bull feces were harmed in the making of this video. Jonis brought a camera to the party, Hiroshi brought one, and since I was hosting I had mine going. so that many cameras because they all just showed up.

  • I really like that sword. But, however, i want to practise witch it. Is it good for that, how does it feel in your hand, and is it good for cutting things(i mean when it's sharp). I would like you to sharpen it, and make a video of you cutting something. I would bye a unitet cutlry sword, so is it better then this one?! I mean in angles of the blade.

  • @AltecGS I have never touched a United Cutlery sword and I have no idea how good they are but I suspect they are not very good or I would have heard more of them, but you never know when there's something good lurking under the radar.

as for this sword, it feels very heavy in the hand. it is sluggish and hard to move properly. I do not know how it cuts when sharpened well because this sword does not belong to me (the guy with the funny laugh brought it). it is pretty but I don't like it.

  • @AltecGS if you get one and want me to sharpen it let me know and we'll work something out. I think if you are serious about studying anything like real swordsmanship this sword is not going to be a good selection. if you want a sword to wear around at the ren fair or to cosplay with at the convention this is a very good sword for that.

  • Lol replicas aren't sharpened I'm surprised you didn't just knock the thing over like you hit with a club.

  • @HaveSomeQuark well this wasn't your run of the mill stainless steel thing. it was supposed to be a real functional sword. I wasn't too impressed by it but it was certainly a real weapon. I actually know a thing or two about swords and their use. I have been practicing swordsmanship as a martial art for nearly 20 years. I would never cut with one of those cheapo replicas, those can be pretty scary frail

  • 0:35 the most retarded laugh EVER!!!

    Sounds like a goat.

  • I noticed that the sword cut as well pushed the target piece away. A sword sharpened to a perfect edge would have cut the target piece in two with the lower portion of the target remaining on the post. The edges of the sword may not be sharpened at the correct angles.

  • @DrysonBennington1 you have a real knack for finding these. lol. if this sword had an edge that had been sharpened to perfection it would be a very different sword. DSA, in my opinion, does not put correct edge geometry on their swords. this sword was the better of the two my friend brought . both DSA swords were very heavy, very thick, with very steep and dull secondary bevels. check out my more recent videos using ATrim swords if you want to see swords made right. theres a huge difference.

  • is this stainless steel?

  • @pilotbutterfly nope it is carbon steel and was made by Dark Sword Armory with some extra custom work to make it more pretty. A real beast of a sword to swing but looks great.

  • @Ianflaer That's hawt

  • it would be awesome if u sharpend it

  • well it would be better. I'm still not a fan of the weight and handling of this sword but she is a beast and that weight and forward balance suites some people better than others. this is not the kind of sword that I prefer but this in no way means it isn't good, just not for me.

  • Now THAT is a hand-and-a-half sword.

  • no, the hilt is WAAAY too long to be a hand and a half, this is a dedicated two handed longsword

  • Pardonne my terminology, good sir! How long is the hilt on that? Maybe 11 inches?

  • yup a hand and a half sword will only have room for, well, a hand and a half of the other hand. hand and a half swords tend to have grips of 4.5 to 5 inches or so. I didn't measure the length of the hilt on this but there was LOTS of room on it. the hand and a half/longsword confusion is a common one though and I still may have some facts wrong, but I'm trying to clear up the whole thing.

  • See, this is why I'm here- I was thinking hand-and-a-half was 5 - 7 inches. But with this new info, I'd consider that a Zweihander!

  • well now don't go overboard here!, zwei-hander might be an ok term but as I understand it, that is a very specific term for a specific german sword of really very large diminsions.

    this is a longsword.

D&D players (me since second grade) will be confused by the longsword term so we have to be especially vigilent in learning the right things. longswords have been misunderstood for a long time I think

  • Well, a longsword is 1d6, and a two-hander is 1d10 - that looks like a 1d10+1, or d12. ~_^

  • obviously it's the runes of power on it. CAN'T YOU SEE THE RUNES?!!

    runes!

  • I can see the runes, but I wanna cast magic missile on the darkness!!

  • lol

"ok, ok, you see an elf before you (that's me right) ok you can talk to each other now, if you like. "hello, I am Galstaff sorcerer of light." "Then how come you had to use magic missle?"

  • @Ianflaer the runeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeestooooooooone!

  • NIce Vid Ian ! For a huge blade.. it's very very sharp I see...and that's difficult to pull off for the swordsmith who crafted the blade. Good job to you and he ! 5 Stars !

  • Thanks for the Kind words Haz, but actually this sword is not very sharp and it has a definite secondary bevel which doesn't help. the sword is pretty. the sword is solid and heavy. it has a great heat treat.
