one time i battled a baltoy in sapphire. it used selfdestruct but he missed and he blew himself up without even harming my sandslash. i just laughed.

indeed yes. When an encounter is triggered, you have roughly 1/1892 chance of generating a "shiny". Ironically, this is how I got 1(sapphire) 1(leafgreen) 2(platinum) shines( 2 additional more in a chain). Believe it or not, this is my truth. If the concept is still too confusing consider this: with an encounter, a complex number sequence is generated, similar to ID, but much, MUCH longer. In theory, if the sequence generates a certain number, than a shiny will appear. Hope this helps.

is there a different catch rate for shinies or not? Coz Marriland says that baltoy's Catch rate is 255, and you got it on pokeball 3 after putting it to sleep...

Since it was at full health, the catch value would have been 1/3 * 2 * 255, for the health modifier, ball, and catch rate respectively. This number being less than 255, there were odds that he would miss.

You should just faint your abra and leave it in first... you won't have to switch to it that way and it will still have the sync effect.
