The word assalamu alaikum = peace be upon you is a general greeting used by every Arabs whether they are moslem or not. Please be rational and dont feel oversensitive. because you see " Assalam alykm " means " peace to you " or " peace " and when we say " wa alaikm " its like saying " you too" ! but in arabic it's better to say wa alaikm asslam " peace to you too " . We use it more :)

slam or salam means peace that's what islam came from <3
