i was at Neiman Marcus and got a chance to try Arabie by Lutens. Does AS smell anything like arabie? cuz if so i would run away. having arabie on me is like having gone to my fav thai-indian restaurant, knowing my clumsy self i accidently pour a whole pot of curry onto my arms but with my fuck -it attitude i'll continue the meal. and that's what it smells like.

You should start a punk band and call it The Mummified Man Berries!! Too freakin' funny!! I smelled Ambre Sultan for the first time this weekend at the Sniffapalooza Fall Ball at Bergdorf's NYC. I loved it!! It got better and prettier as the day wore on. I must have looked insane sniffing myself on the LIRR all the way home! By the time I got home I felt sad taking a shower.. This will be my Christmas present to myself this year!!! :)

I think Amouage Epic Man is very sexy. And I love so many of the Amouages, especially Lyric Woman, Jubiliation XXV and Jubilation 25, and Homage Attar.

Love most of the By Kilians, too. Enjoying TDC Bois d'Iris, Sel de Vetiver and Jasmin de Nuit.

Oh, you should try SL's Daim Blond - more subtle than Ambre Sultan, but great! And I love By Kilian, The Different Company, Parfumerie Generale and Amouage.

The folks who work there are SO knowledgeable - I've learned so much from them, and you will too!

I much prefer, MPG, Ambre Precieux, over Ambre Sultan. AS is nice, but a little to boring for me. Arabie is wonderful, it is like AS, but on steroids.

Because on skin I can only wear 1 perfume and my nose get used to it very very fast, I get used to spray my perfume in plastic tumbler : you focuse on the sillage and the perfume's identity, your nose never get tired, you spare perfume, and you can smell 20 perfumes at the same times

I beg a Habit rouge sample recently : it's stunningly strong, yet only EDT, and masculine !

The plastic tumbler technique is a good idea - a mini-version of Frederic Malle's "smelling columns". Do you have a bunch of cups lined up, or do you wash it out after every spritz?

I'm curious about trying different concentrations of Habit Rouge. I've been loving the EDT - it's very satisfying and complex.

At first I used tiny glass cups, but it took to much time to wash them (boring), so now I buy picnic plastic tumbler that I throw away after (very practical).

But there is no best way to smell perfume : skin, glass cup, plactic tumbler give different view.

Each brand seems to create gizmo : smelling columns at Malle, "verre monclin" at Patou.

Professional noses must have other tips to smell.

Beware before buying ambre perfume : ambre is a crowd pleaser. But personnaly, I get bored with them very fast (I've bought "ambre extreme" (artisan parfumeur) and never use it)

I don't know if this advice applies with "ambre sultan", it's an oddball, and bold. It deffinitely worth trying, on the wrist, but blind buying it : nah!

I pretty much never meet an amber I don't like, but I know what you mean, M69, a lot of them are singing the same tune over and over again. But hey, it's a song I like!

I wore my bottle of Tom Ford Amber Absolute down to the very last drop. And I love my Tann Rokka Aki - peppery powder amber similar to L'Artisan's Ambre Extreme.

And you've just reminded me that I want to re-explore Parfumerie Generale L'Ombre Fauve - thanks!

Yes, classic ambers are an easy catched songs. I don't like them on my skin (exception made maybe for "ambre sultan"), maybe because it reminds me bad souvenirs : when my perfume is gone and what remains is the drydown of amber or vanilla.

Did you noticed most of classic Guerlains ended being mostly amber : Shalimar extrait (loud amber), Chamade extrait (a soft vanilla I can almost more taste than smell), Habit rouge EDT... I think it's the way I like amber.

Ambre Sultan in the summer?! Now, that is a bold move.

IMO, this perfume should be the benchmark for all other amber fragrances. Ambre Sultan is a combination of spices, resins and vanilla like no other. However, because it is as rich and ceremonious as copal I found this scent to be unwerable for me. I guess I will have to wait for the hot summer to give it another try.

I need to get another sample of this one. When I first tried it, I thought of it as a very smoldering amber. While we're kind of in the oriental area, I think Musc Ravageur is quite nice if a light application is used.
