I watched back yard jets about 2 years back, great video, just decided to watch it again and found this video. Very sad, a great guy by the looks of it, why do we always loose the good ones?
I watched the tin can turbine and Derwent jet videos years ago and they have always stuck in my mind as fine examples of the exploits that a couple of excellent blokes would dare do in suburbia! The concrete lifting incident is one of my favorite stories that I tell people about 8-)
I am deeply dismayed by Karl's passing and I am just one more person who wishes he had known him as a friend.
Respond to this video... Finding out that Karl had passed was such a kick in the guts. I had just stumbled across the jet video and was thinking up a way of getting him to fire the engine up again with new HD cameras etc. Very nice tribute and all the very best.
I have seen a couple of videos over the last year or so with Karl, had no idea he had passed away. Although I never met him, his cheerful antics are something I will sorely miss watching, but I feel privileged to have had the chance to view him in action with a few of his toys / inventions. What a bloke, Australia needs more people like Karl. Great video.
Leo, I watched some of the backyard jet engine videos a while back and recently again and learned of Karl's passing. This memorial video is special, and touches my heart, I have friends who fill the place in my life that Karl did in yours. Thank you for sharing this with us.
well done, a fitting tribute - I can hear him laughin - imagine the toys he gets to make in heaven!!!! I wonder if there is less grubby grease there, and fiats that never break down??? Maybe he got to meet tony after all!!!
glad I found this video of karl. his tinkering seemed endless. The lil boy with a chemistry set, the lil science guy. jealious of his job at the fireworks display in Sydney. this is a good human life story of a friend who liked life. Great dedication video!!!
Youtube needs a better way to filter videos, I mostly come across videos of rants or nothing but rants in the comment area. I randomly came across this video and glad I did, these are the kind of videos that should be viewed all over youtube
@somuchdirt74 yes thats a good point, it almost needs a memorial section, the random nature of the tube is sometimes disturbing but thats the way many like it.
Its very unfortunate. I discovered your videos today and I watched many of them..got excited to continue watching but then I see this. I'm sorry for your loss.
I was just wondering if you knew whether Karl's illness was related to his work with engines or not? Just curious. It's unfortunate when we lose good people so early in life. Having said that, it's better for someone to have lived a short life and had some great personal accomplishments, than live a long life wthout any.
For your self described lack of polish?? lol, your video has in fact conveyed your friend superbly to those of us unlucky to have not crossed his path. In doing this I hope that others will take inspiration to actually "do" and not just "think maybe".
Your friend lives on through your memory and that is a added bonus to his zest for life. Do not feel sorrow, feel empowered for having known such a person. Kia Kaha bro.
You are a good friend. I wish more people had friends like you.
Carl had a good friend in you.
After watching you video, I would have liked Carl too, had we ever actually met that is. Carl sounds a lot like me. God knows he was into the same kind of stuff I'm into. And just recently I've been looking at building a jet engine from a turbo much like Carl had done. He sounds like a person I wish I could have met someday.
@DrGoodwrench64 thank you, good luck with your turbo jet engine i can't express the fun you get playing with jets
the thing which has hit home for me is so many stories related to me are known through Karl, his passing has made me realize his side of remembering the many thing we did has also vanished. The only other witness to many of these events was my video camera, sort of brings home the importance of recording even the most everyday thing.
Touching video to a sad passing. What an amazing zest for life! I have followed you two and your looney escapades for years. I am sorry for your loss...
Do you still have his truck mounted Derwent? That thing was awesome!
@moreleftpedal I don't know where the Derwent is now, lots of people have enquired on that believe me. I think that engine purchase was a perfect example of Karl's ability to turn something said into something done. There are lots of people who are gonna do lots of stuff, Karl just did it.
He was always good at hunting down the most obscure thing, he bought for me some jetex motors from the 1960's, and again once he had a seed of desire he always followed through.
Its been a while since I looked in you guys and I am shocked to hear the sad news, I too feel that I had got to know you both by watching your amazing experiences.
Your tribute has moved me more than I am able to convey with words, I hope that when it is my time to check out that I have a friend as good as you to speak a few kind words.
@SlamDuncDrummer I have heaps of footage of some very dangerous activity, issue is if I put this on the tube the goody two shoe troll agents will flag the material, it seems this environment is not s free speech as they claim
I am very sorry about your friend. You guys sure had a blast and what a great friend and bond you guys both shared. For anyone to have such a great friend in life is blessed. Thank you for sharing your videos.
@201MF not sure, it's from a old audio program I have which has a bunch of copyright free tracks, used to be bundled with adobe premiere many years ago.
It almost felt like I got to know you guys from watching the videos on backyard jet engines, rockets and all your other crazy projects. I recently logged onto your channel to look at the back yard jet engine again and saw this video. I was stunned to learn of Karl's passing, but your video was very touching and a better tribute to such a bloke you'd struggle to find.
Its always so sad when someone is taken from us, your video is a loving tribute to a beautiful person, i am sure Karl would of been very proud of your efforts.
Woow .... you really lost a good friend there mate, and a fellow maker of all things crazy, may he live on in the internet to inspire the young of today to make insane creations an not just sit pressing keys
i don't know one of you. But i simply see, that it was a very special connection you had. It is just great too watch his "tryouts" ..he could be a pioneer in the early 20th century. He tried out everything he could...and had fun in his life...that's one amazing person...and he shows how life can be, if you have fun...undescribeable...May he Rest in Peace
Am so sad to here that Karl has past away, i enjoyed the videos of the progression of his jet engines and now watching this i realize it was only a small part of the works of a supremely intelligent, resourceful and active man who had an equal drive to develop new projects as he had to help those around him. I'm sure he was an absolute scream of a guy and someone who i would have loved to drank a beer with and talked some bench engineering with. RIP
Looked like a great bloke and you had some good times over the years. Sorry for your loss, but your video was a fine reminder of how much fun boys can have with their toys. Have simular memories myself and wouldn't loss them for the world.
a long time ago i looked at Karl's videos with turbo's and that jet engine with the odd starting sequence sad to see this video today by mistake and find out that he is no longer with us..

stumbled across this vid, searching for home made jet footage.
Having lost my best friend not even a year ago at the age of 23, I know how gutting it can be. What you said about the gifts being so much more important now is absolutely spot on mate. I've got things that my friend gave me when we were 6 years old. I am so happy I always kept them.
@johnbozi Just for you sir, the ads are turned off related to this video..as a partner I have no control over the ad which appears next to the video, the invideo ad is not there as the ad's are off!..
I make popular content so my video are featured. I have no control what gets featured, possibly you could tell me how it works.
Before you decide to have a go get your facts correct, lets hope you think about your comment a little more now.
I hope it is feature for months to come, just for you.
@johnbozi This is really not the video to point out some sad facts about advertising on youtube, to be quite honest I remember a tube when there was no ad's.
The savage way the advertising is applied to youtube even surprises me. Is the tube better for it, no.
Sir I am a youtuber who does not play my own videos on my channel, I do my best to support others to become partners. I also do not flood the tube with daily vlogs which make it really hard for many good producers to ever get noticed.
@leokimvideo give up replying - 1. I felt this was a great video 2. ads were not appropriate 3. I don't need people giving me shit because pointed it out. Deleting all comments.
@johnbozi Hopefully you have learned a lesson here, sometimes it is best not to comment on stuff you don't understand.
Very poor show having a go at me on this video. By you removing your comments really sums up your attack, maybe next time use the PM.
If you have any further complaints why this video is featured or about youtube advertising related to partners I suggest you contact youtube Australia please.
@cessnaclub thanks for support here, I sorted this tuber out so much he removed his comments, lets hope he engages his brain before making grand statements about my settings related to this video and youtube.
Hi Leo - I would like to express by deepest sympathy for the loss of your fantastic friend Karl. Having gotten to know you via YouTube, I watched and listened closely to you & Karl narrating the history of your early rocket experiments with interest. The fun and excitement of these videos has inspired me to take on building my own amateur rocket. With your permission and in memory of Karl I would like to name a rocket after him "K.McManess 2010" launching it over the Auckland Harbour in Nov?
You truly captured the real Karl in this video, I know he would have taken the piss out of you but loved it. I fmet Karl in 1986 when we studied mechanical engineering together. He was one of a kind, a natural born curious engineer, a brilliant thinker and the most down to earth genuine guy I ever met.. We lost touch in the mid 90s, something I regret. I didnt know Karl when he fell ill, but can imagine his frustration. Karl will always be remembered, my kids know all about him. Glenn.
@glenntan1000 Sorry for the delayed reply. Karl had a large network of friends I never met, yes I remember the time he studied just after we left school.
All you say about Karl is correct, he sure was curious! thanks for your thoughts here.
Many people would see Karl in the jet videos and wonder where he went, quite often I would receive a mail asking where is Karl. I tended to respect the private aspect he always had and would not detail his situation.
How did this end up on the featured videos on YouTube? No insensitivity intended but it doesn't seem like the kind of thing to appear there. Well anyways there is a lot of awesome footage in the video and yeah, it is actutally good i'm sure Karl would have loved it despite me not knowing him personally.
hhmm thats sad had some interesting and fun hobbies ,what real man doesn't like tinkering with at least one of these things, dont worry there will be more like Karl to come thats for sure!
@Addyio wow. he made this video so people can go to it anytime type in Karl's name and remember him. i dont know the guy at all and it was a really nice video, sure you have the right to your own opinion, but you crossed the line by trying to put someone down. Go do something productive with your life.
@Addyio dude, its a tribute video to a guy who had died. If you don't like it, don't have to and have a winge about a video of someone who died recently!
@Addyio hmm, i think its faggots like you that make sentimental, gentle people, like me, want to get up, build a rocket(like karl could:D) load it with warheads, bomb you and all your absolutely thoughtless friends, and then piss on your ashes, but karl would not want that, so here's a polite fuck you, and have a nice day p.s. sorry you mum died
Wow, that man packed a lifetime of living in a short space. Kinda humbling. It shines through that he was a genuine bloke, and you were lucky to have known each other. Regards from kiwiland.
bye carl. AUSTRALIA! Give Stephen Conroy your last preference for the Senate on Saturday to tell the ALP not to mess with our Interwebs!: watch?v=BJ-JgqKhE6M
The jet engine on the concrete says it all. Carl must have been a lot of fun to be around. You really gave us a character in this tribute Leo. Sorry for your loss. Your friend would be chuffed. Now you've given him to the world.
Sorry for Karl's loss. I have seen a few of his videos too over the years and sounds like he was one great and special friend. Someone who loved to share his passion with those interested and took the time in doing so.
I never met him, and I won't pretend to, but I will say this; you clearly lost a good friend, and for your sake and the sake of all those who knew him, may he rest in peace and be remembered for all the things you have shared with us, and those that were special between him and those who were close to him.
Rest in Peace Karl, and may you never be forgotten by those who you loved and who loved you back.
Just wanted to let you know that this video moved me, you are really a great friend of Karl's, as they say great people attracted great friends, well done for honoring your friend , he was taken far too early in life. Thank you
Everytime i drive my car your spirit will drive with me mate... i will never forget what you did for me between machining that obscure place in my engine block for the oil squirters, lightening my steel flywheel in your "man's garage" or just a swift kick in the ass to hurry up and finish my restoration.
I stumbled across this video, I've never met either of you but being of a similar age and growing up in those same times, One I had reached the end of the video I felt like I'd been at school and grown up with both of you. I never knew anyone quite that talented but if you combined 2 or 3 guys I knew you had one Karl :)
So I'd say you've outdone yourself making this :). Also have a friend who's birthday I never forget no matter how many years pass (she shares her birthday with my grandmother)
I watched back yard jets about 2 years back, great video, just decided to watch it again and found this video. Very sad, a great guy by the looks of it, why do we always loose the good ones?

@leokimvideo give up replying - 1. I felt this was a great video 2. ads were not appropriate 3. I don't need people giving me shit because pointed it out. Deleting all comments.
johnbozi 1 year ago
@johnbozi Hopefully you have learned a lesson here, sometimes it is best not to comment on stuff you don't understand.
Very poor show having a go at me on this video. By you removing your comments really sums up your attack, maybe next time use the PM.
If you have any further complaints why this video is featured or about youtube advertising related to partners I suggest you contact youtube Australia please.

Gday Leo
You truly captured the real Karl in this video, I know he would have taken the piss out of you but loved it. I fmet Karl in 1986 when we studied mechanical engineering together. He was one of a kind, a natural born curious engineer, a brilliant thinker and the most down to earth genuine guy I ever met.. We lost touch in the mid 90s, something I regret. I didnt know Karl when he fell ill, but can imagine his frustration. Karl will always be remembered, my kids know all about him. Glenn.
glenntan1000 1 year ago

@Addyio wow. he made this video so people can go to it anytime type in Karl's name and remember him. i dont know the guy at all and it was a really nice video, sure you have the right to your own opinion, but you crossed the line by trying to put someone down. Go do something productive with your life.
sideshow45 1 year ago
@Addyio dude, its a tribute video to a guy who had died. If you don't like it, don't have to and have a winge about a video of someone who died recently!
Quesic 1 year ago
@Addyio hmm, i think its faggots like you that make sentimental, gentle people, like me, want to get up, build a rocket(like karl could:D) load it with warheads, bomb you and all your absolutely thoughtless friends, and then piss on your ashes, but karl would not want that, so here's a polite fuck you, and have a nice day p.s. sorry you mum died

@Addyio That is a horrible thing to say... even if you may be joking you should NEVER joke about the death of someone close to another person.
