  • Thumbs up if you're from the Florence area!

  • I love the fact that these guys are still arguing over whose fault it was. It's been 30 years.

  • back when nascar was nascar without all of the bullshit

  • AH, the Warlords and Gladiators of the good old days..They took the biggest chances with their lives without the spacesuits that drivers wear today and these kings of racing had the REAL BALLS.

  • This is when NASCAR was really fun without all the corporate garbage and they raced with real cars. If this happend in today's NASCAR it would mean points deductions, fines, and maybe suspensions. Miss the old days of letting the drivers police themselves and settle things on the track like real men. Money changes everything.

  • seen the 1st crash on a vhs video

  • Oh man, what a heck of a race! You can´t compare the ole days from today. Today almost only young kids drive the Cot´s. I stopped watching nascar from week to week since 2003. The budget for a season skyrocket up 1996. From 3 Million $ to15-20 Million $ today. It´s a shame, for those cars with old engines and carburettors, solid rear axle and tube frame i can´t understand that cost so much money. Why 900 HP+? Today a crate engine would done this job. I love old nascar, but not the new generation

  • BOTH were excellent racers. We love you, guys.

  • ufff is amazing!!!!!

  • But, I have to say, at the end of the day, I still prefer Ken Squier's CBS call of that incident. Pure Storytelling Genius, that man. They sure don't make 'em like that anymore.

  • This is the first time EVER that I have heard the MRN call of the last lap of this race.....Thanks!

  • cale was more than a match for the 2 allisons...

  • In high school, my Dad took me to the 500 in 1979 as he did many years before. We broke down half way down and hitched the rest of the way. Their used to be a hotel across from the front stretch and we went in and got a hotel room that someone just cancelled. I was in turn 4 during the fight but what I remember most was Joe Frasson's car exploding during the Busch race. Friends who never talked about NASCAR to me before were all interested in it when I got back. Incredible memories!

  • hmm @ stokieaggro1863 and unpilot15 you guys both just sound foolish arguing and talkin trash over the internet do your selfs a favor and just stop really

  • @hemptrue we did. sorry bout that. sometimes I can get a bit carried away. I deleted my comments with him, though.

  • nascar is gay......

  • he must have played hockey.

  • Best part is look who won....

  • I saw an interview during the 50th Anniversary of Daytona 500 and the two were in a room together talking about this fight. You could see they still were angry about it. It cracked me up.

  • white trash

  • white trash

  • This WAS nascar. Havent watched a full race since about 94 or so. Cars are not STOCK cars anymore and when nascar got popular it got ruined. It is just painfull to try and watch it now. Restricter plates, cookie cutter body templates, team racing etc. It went Hollywood and never came back. Love to see a wing car or cyclone get turned lose on todays racing. Ha!

  • Now THATS "Boys Have At It!" REAL AND UP CLOSE! WooHoo!

  • his nose proceded to beat my fist

  • The Best Finish!

  • Quite easily, the greatest moment in NASCAR history. One Great Finish, one great fight, and one great moment.

  • the first race on the pavement that just got replaced at daytona

  • ahh yes the days when NASCAR fans didn't complain about every little thing. I miss those days! One thing still hasn't changed though, I still love NASCAR.

  • This was when NASCAR was real. Real cars, real driving, real men. Today's version looks like its run by Vince McMahon. Needless to say I haven't wayched NASCAR in years.

  • @gazellehunter1 I'd rather have "fake" cars, in your words than loosing drivers, compared to F1 or Indycar, NASCAR is as "Real" as it gets.

  • This is what happens when NASCAR drivers are too aggressive.

  • @MasterMaxx100 no it's called racing and rubbing is racing. That is why Nascar became so popular and why it is tanking now. No more putting the chrome horn to a fellow driver with the filtered down indy car like COT that Nascar has now.

  • This is what racing looks like

  • Donnie clearly ran Cale into the grass... I'll always remember this race, as others have mentioned this was the first Daytona 500 televised live. Ever after this I was huge Cale Yarbourough fan, and he's still a great guy!

  • @RedroomStudios That is correct, you can see Donnie cross the white lines as Cale tries to pass him, it is clearly his fault.

  • I remeber that fight well. Great race thanks for the upload.

  • No points deduced either!

  • This is pretty sweet. Richard Petty has his own Cameo Star and now you can send the King to your friends on Facebook!

  • Oh for the glory days of NASCAR! What they are doing these days is a poor excuse for racing!! This happened on the day I got married, 1st time that the Daytona 500 was talevised.

  • @Dgb12651 It was not the first Daytona "500" to be televised.

But it was the first one, as far as I know, to be televised live from start-to-finish.

Reportedly, there was a cold wave in much of the country that an urban legend claims contributed to the high viewership.

In reality, the big TV numbers were caused by the growth in fan interest auto racing received during the 1970's.

Also: Isn't the 2011 edition of the Daytona "500" going to be run under the lights in prime time?

  • @altfactor The cold wave was definitely real, I don't know about the urban legend but like I said that was the day that I got married and we had 2 ft. of snow that day here in NC. Biggest snowstorm i ever saw!!!!!!

  • This is pretty sweet. Richard Petty has her own Cameo Star and now you can send the King to your friends on Facebook!

  • This is pretty sweet. Richard Petty has his own Cameo Star and now you can send the King to your friends on Facebook!

  • haha he clearly shut the door too late, he had nowhere else to go but into his car

  • He ramed the back of his car. Bull

  • the great age of nascar

  • Right Donnie, Cale had you pinned right against the wall!!!!

  • Donnie Allison, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, AJ Foyt Jr., Bobby Allison.

    Those are some drivers

  • nascar sucks

  • NASCAR SUX NOW! THOSE WERE THE GOOD TIMES!

  • Comment removed

  • Those were the days when nascar WAS nascar.

  • What was the show that this recap came from? I hear Allen Bestwick talking and I feel like this was from some speed channel show in the late 90's/early 00's that I've watched before, but I can't remember the name.

  • @marimbaman89 This may not answer your question, but the radio commentary team (I believe Barney Hall and Eli Gold) is quite the mind trip.

  • cale looks like bill clinton !

  • I'm glad this video is still here. I'm reading a book called "He Crashed Me, So I Crashed Him Back", about the 1979 NASCAR season. The first third of the book is about the '79 Daytona 500.

  • Did all of this end in a handshake, did they get along after this?

  • @Dshed1967 no lol wish we could have fights like that now without having big fines lol

  • o.O

  • this was better than...the crap we have today.

  • Wish we had the NASCAR at Germany.....

  • yea i love nascar ^^

  • Wild World of Sports was a recap show on ABC... I remember seeing it there also. Dumbass.

  • @jimschrute914 So a recap show = seeing it live? Dumbass.

  • they actually drove real cars in nascar?

  • Djkdogg Chrysler isn't a foreign car company they are mopar the dodge Plymouth and Chrysler corporation

  • Why are there reenactment broadcasters/

  • dude in brown car is a fuck nut. asshole shouda let him pass. He had the drop on his selfish ass.

  • the moron with the cap shouldnt even be in the race car. not only does he hav a fucked up accent, he cut into the car on the inside and fucked both up...and he looks like a retard in the interview. strip him off his license and gve him a wheelchair...

  • @jwmm4eva Yeah, when he won the Indy 500, he was retarded. You're retarded, you fucking cunt.

  • hey stable when i want some compliments ill ask for it allright? but thx anyway. and the guy with the cap is a retard.

  • Good Vid. Please tell me how the hell you people manage to cause shit fights on every video.. Global economy? WTF has that got to do with Nascar!! Just enjoy the vid for what it is!

  • i hate how racist people dont realize how ignorant they sound

  • gunny I understand the sentiment but you are wrong. Japan does not "run" the global economy. Multinational Corporations do.

  • 2:18 "He ran the back of me first." Hmmm, I wonder why? Maybe it was because you were cutting him off and pushing him over towards the field... he didnt have a choice. Dumbass

  • Cale was right, Bobby caused that wreck...LOL

  • If you don't understand racing now you will never get it. Just like I don't understand licking leaves.

  • it still sounds like bobby and cale are STILL fighting over this wreck....

  • i wish there would be more fist fights... maybe the announcers should disagree on something and just start throwing hay-makers!!

  • this is back when the cars were actually "stock" not the heavily modified bodys of today.

  • not to mention american none of there damn jap cars today

  • really?????? ummmm when NASCAR started there were jaguars and other foreign made cars....Chrysler....German.....at least the Toyotas are assembled in America giving Americans jobs not like Chevy and Ford who employ Canadians and Mexicans....

  • well yeah i know that but there not japan now are they' you dont see germany ruining the global economy do you? how many japanease cars do you see on your street? alot right? ask someone whos been to japan how many american cars they seen on one street? probly a few 1/2 mabey that tell's you how much they buy from us not alot

  • Maybe it's me, but I really don't get the appeal of racing.

Watching cars going around and around and around over and over again.

    It's just boring

  • Understandable, if you've never felt the adrenaline rush of pushing a car to its limits before. I respect NASCAR drivers, they go through hell in those races, but I don't enjoy watching such a drawn out event. I'd rather watch something that requires fine technical skill like Autocross, rally, or a drift run.

  • This isn't racing, look up "Formula 1 Onboard" on Youtube. Or "WRC Onboard"

  • what? so we can watch follow the leader? I'd rather watch 3 wide racing at 190 mph with cars bumping for position and exciting finishes than that.

  • NASCAR has always been more of a spectator's sport than Formula or WRC, simply because it's both more exciting and easier to spectate.

Formula and Touring car racing (or any form of racing with both LH and RH turns) is a fine art; more of an enthusiast's sport. It's about the feeling and finesse of car control on the limit. You hardly have time to think about where other cars are, let alone follow them. And it's not about the battles, it's about getting around the track as fast as possible

  • And don'y get football why do they kick a ball back and forward over and over, listen racing is more dangerous the football in fact you should be thanking motorracing there crashes are what make our road cars safer

  • i feel the same way about golf. hit a ball with a crooked stick, then walk to the ball. then hit it again. then hit it again into a hole in the ground and pick the ball back up. it's ridiculous. why watch a pretentious "sport" like golf when you could watch racecars drive upwards of 190mph, where there's a greater likelihood of someone going to the hospital.

  • if it's boring, don't watch it. there. problem solved.

  • cale made more sense, if your moving at 160+ MPH the car will shot up either back ontop the race track or into the infield. I think that donnie should went high and sling shot by cale in turn 3, however it was an exiting crash and race

  • Cale hit him. He weren't gonna git shut out, and he hit Donnie. Like the preacher said, "They's some holes you just aren't gonna fit into".

  • He ran Cale off the track.

  • You DID run him into the infield?

  • Cale turned into him, clearly.

  • "Petty almost put him off in the grass!"

What race are you watching? lol.

You gotta love those added on after the fact announcers.

  • Ah yes. The good ole days of Nascar. Today's Nascar sucks.

  • this is real STOCK car racing

  • @brucekirk89 I think so, too

  • LOL I love the way the driver that does indeed squeeze him off states ' a lot of people think I ran him off the road but he hit the back me first!'

Yeah mate, he hit you because he wouldve had to take to the grass!

  • It's obvious he took all the track he could drive on, therefore he ran him off the track... what a load of shit

  • Donnie Allison is a liar, anyone with eyes can see that Cale was passing him and Donnie ran him ALL THE WAY down the track. Donnie knew he was beat and couldn't take it.

  • It was a racing incident. If the front of your car meets the driver's door then he should give you room. In this case Cale was going a lot faster than Donnie but Donnie did a poor job blocking him. Cale was already underneath him and had all 4 wheels on the track when Donnie hit him. I

  • no offense but there is no fuckin way this is infamous it is the best thing tht will ever happen cuz cale yaborough was involved in wat took place and he is jj idol the 3 time champ looks up 2 him and he is made a carrer cuz of it

  • infamous means famous for a bad reason, and thats what this is

  • Civic VTEC is from 1979?? Shut up

  • GOOD OLD NASCAR

    I love it!

  • @agusfran12 Who doesn't?

  • What's with the announcer for back then? His voice is oddly feminine.

  • i kno one is Barney Hall

  • i know! i had to mute my computer, it was getting on my nerves

  • THE KING ALL HAIL THE KING

  • Any true (complete) racing fan can appreciate the different skills and engineering involved in ALL forms of racing. NICE to see Jensen Button win Monaco yesterday.

  • Man I was just kidding. I'm not a racing fan, but I respect the drivers as skilled individuals.

  • i am a fan of KUBICA(Robert) BMW Sauber .... he won at monaco last season but this season is a bad season for him! ,,, already 3 engines died! That's just f***ed up! He might join a different team! and good to see an F1 fan!

  • Yes, and I still get chills thinking of the 200 mph crash he had in Canada. SCARY.

  • Yea .... thay was scary

  • he won at montreal last year, im sure you knew that just got the mons mixed up im guessing

  • Kubica won at Monaco ??

    It's at Montreal ;)

  • But you feel the need to put your 2 cents in? Go suck a dick....

  • yeah for real. i dont get why you haters watch nascar videos if you hate it so much. and ill admit to being a le mans fan also, but they cant take any kind of damage, a tap in the wall will break an axle. nascars get the shit beat out of them and can still finish a race.

  • Ok, you go out there and do it since it's so easy.

  • Cale is GOD...I know his Brother JD good people

  • nascar is what it is. cars driving in a circle for freaking ever but that was one of the all time greatest nascar moments ever. Thanks for posting!

  • jerk

  • i dont think u have any idea how demanding it is to drive that. its like being on a rollercoaster, thats how big the g forces are. imagine doing that for up to 4-5 hours and tell me if ur an athlete then

  • I race stock cars on dirt, which is obviously a lot slower than this but the corners are tighter. I was so surprised at the amount of g-forces I felt going into the corner. Now I got used to it and really don't feel it at all. People who race at all levels really put their life into it. It costs so much money to race even at the local dirt track.

  • lets see u do it. i'll bet your some 11 year old nerd that knows NOTHING about the SPORT of nascar. plus the fact that they go to road courses and hey dipshit their ovals. learn something u pos.

  • you don't turn your wheel to the right at 200 mph. Cale did it twice in that segment.

  • I have to disagree Fania54. I'm not sure about the rest of the race but to me Bobbie was driving a very straight line there, and Cale put himself in a poor position, then ran into Bobbie. Anyways, hell of a finish.

  • brandonsmail99 -- I was kidding, it''s what Cale supposedly said in the heat of the moment. I think it's hilarious. Bobby was nowhere near Donnie and Cale when the last lap deal happened. Anyway, I agree.....hell of a finish!

  • oh! Sorry about that lol! Have a good one man!

  • .............

  • Cale was right, the wreck was Bobby Allison's fault, "Bobby was blocking all day"

  • lol this+ Benny Hill theme= LMFAO

  • Back when nascar was nascar...

  • this was when NASCAR was at its prime. and hey dunlopdaytona, dont even start. formula 1 and nascar require the same amount of skill. all the drivers start out drivin' go karts and all that.

  • nascar drivers are the best racers in the world

  • fantastic..

  • club tril

  • Put NASCAR on the map. Lay off Logano he's only 18 years old. A kid for Christ's sake. I hope he make you eat cake.

  • Club Trillion

  • Ha haaa!! I'm not french, I live in France though. You're smarter than I thought, you can eat burgers AND look at my profile. I'm impressed.

  • I actually saw this on TV... Hard to believe it was 30 years ago!

  • Oh shut up. Skill? Formula 1 requires skill at every level. Advanced engineering, mechanics, physical trainers, computer fluid dynamics.

The drivers have to negotiate twisty chicanes in tenths of a second while fighting against 5 G's of decceleration.

And we can look past skin color (look at our world champion this year).

The only skill nascar requires is who can eat more burgers and who can drink beer quicker than the others.

  • nascar also requires a great deal patience do not getting bored while driving and coffee do not fall sleep behind wheel...

  • Formula One DOES require some skill... for instance, in Formula One the drivers have to turn right sometimes...

  • So do NASCAR drivers. Look at Watkins Glen and courses like that.

  • F1 is cool if you like to watch follow the leader for 2 hours.

  • I like watching the old races better then the new crap with nothing rules for every thing what happen to man car car and a few rules

  • Cale was right, the last lap crash was Bobby's fault... (hahahaha!)

  • If you don't evolve, YOU DISSOLVE!! If you rednecks don't like it, go kill yourselves!!

  • Lightweight Championship of the World............................Classic! Funny! This race officially put NASCAR on the map (nationwide), back in the day when stock car racing was PURELY stock car racing.

  • Ah, the good ole days. I miss those!

"The Alambama Gang" Haven't heard that in years.

    Thanks for the video!

  • Even though Donnie took up a lot of the track, Cale got into him first. I don't blame either one of them, though. I would have done the same thing if I were either one of them. It was Daytona, you do whatever it takes to win.

  • This was the first time since 1959 (and only the second time ever) the Daytona "500" aired live and in full on network TV (CBS).

Thanks to heavy promotion of the telecast----and the last laps' duel which boosted the numbers as people called their neighbors to say "Turn On CBS! There's an amazing finish coming up in Daytona!"---the ratings were the largest ever for a NASCAR race (and maybe any kind of auto race) up to that time.

Auto racing became a big-time TV sport thanks to this finish.
