Interesting version performance with the emphasis of Intrada powerful ending, but my favourite are Karel Ančerl´s with Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and also Sir Charles Mackerras. Janáček is inimmitable, really original Slavic music with earthiness and passion. The most original composer not only in Czechia.
One of my all-time favorite pieces of music—although I have yet to experience it live. The Davis performance is one of the best I've heard. How come the BBC doesn't release more Proms broadcasts like this commercially--DVD or streaming? All I've ever seen on the market have been a couple of Last Night DVDs. I remember looking for a disc of the Mahler 8th that Rattle did with the English National Youth Orchestra, but no luck.
The final two movements of this Mass are just so wild that you wouldn't think this was a sacred work when it, in fact, is but with a 20th century approach. This is a great perfomance and there were some really awesome camera angles in the final seconds.
I totally agree. I purchased this score and I'm literally addicted to this piece, especially Janacek. Being the same nationality as him (and some Russian) I absolutely love this work. It's heavenly, barbaric, and in your face! Janacek definitely knew what he was doing. If you want a copy of the score I'd be glad to send you one at no cost.
@b286guy But Boulez was crap. He can't conduct Janacek to save his worthless life. I went to his Proms performance at the ROH - it was *so* bad that Deutsche Gramofon (who were recording it) kept the orchestra and chorus afterwards to do it all again!! His recording of HOUSE OF THE DEAD is a fiasco.
But DG are trying to get some money out of their investment in Little Pierre now that his composing career has entirely fizzled-out.
@MsModernComposer Agreed! And Sir Charles Mackerras is the master in conducting Janacek. So fortunate that he recorded so much before losing his battle with cancer. What a gift he left us :))
great mass by czech composer Janacek , being the purpose of the author the communion of all slaves nations, let us remember that Janacek was an atheist, still he wrote a great christian mass
There is not a mistake in the first measure. The sound error you hear was down (plainly and squarely!) to the RAH organ needing a much needed restoration, which is why the organ was "down" for Proms 2002 and Proms 2003 in which seasons an electronic replacement was used.

What I love about Janacek is that there's no other composer like him! Totally original, earthy, and in your face!

@MsModernComposer Did you like? I saw it tonight! Amazing piece, and thrilling performance of it by the CSO, Chorus, soloists, and Pierre Boulez.

Why is Andrew Davis trying to look like Henry Wood?
He should go on a diet now and shave off that silly growth on his face.
Good peformance by the way.
