  • Its not AP proof, if you are good... Sure your opponent can make less good choices and "cheat you" and in the process end second. Great fun game. but its NOT casual :p

  • To sweeten this game up just a tad, use the gold coins from Dominion Seaside !!

  • I've played this game, and Tom's review is spot on. One thing I would have emphasized is how there is no downtime. You are never waiting for your turn to come up. This makes the flow the game feel very fast. It's also good for players wanting a social game not requiring a large amount of concentration on the goings on of the game. I'd also note how accessible this game is for non-gamers (and all ages) Last, I think I'd prefer this game with 4-players.

  • Have you never heard of Munchkin? or Chez Geek? You've been living under a rock if you haven't played a good Steve Jackson game.

  • @Toddgpoole One can hardly call Munchkin a "good" game. It's a niche game that tickles the funnybone of D&D fans. Note: I'm not saying it's a bad game.

  • @ERK1138

That's like saying that Scrabble can't be called a good game because it's a niche game for people that know how to read and write.

  • @Toddgpoole - The difference is I'm not saying the reason Munchkin is not a good game "because" it's a niche game. I'm saying that it's simply not a good game and is overrated by the niche that it appeals to. A game can be niche and be great. Also, thankfully, people that know how to read and write would not qualify as a niche.

  • Excellent review! This game went from 'meh, not interested' to top of my want list. Looks like a lot of fun.

  • Blind bidding is like bidding for the Ninja in Samurai Swords.

  • At first, thanks for your video. I don't know very much about SJ-Boardgames - except Munchkin which I love - but in Roleplaying Steve Jackson is my absolutely No. 1. I'm a player since 1984 and I played dozens of Roleplaying Games. From the old D&D to AD&D, from the Basic Roleplaying (Runequest, Stormbringer, CoC) to French or German Games, from Fantasy to SF, Horror, Cyberpunk - but nothing was quite like GURPS. So, SJ is in my opinion one of the greatest Designer of (Roleplaying!!!-) Games.

  • The Steve Jacksons game I'm currently interested in is Zombie Burger :).

  • This game seems like it would be very Analysis Paralysis-prone. Since AP tends to be an issue in my group, I think I'll pass on this one. Nice review, though.

  • I'm the type who gets "analysis paralysis", but even I have very little with this game. In fact, I'm usually not the last to be ready in a round when I play this with others.

  • Actually, Revolution is pretty much analysis paralysis proof. All you're concerned with is what some other player is doing this turn, which is hidden - you *can't* analyse it.

I've seen AP-prone players - people who *cripple* other games - and they zip through Revolution turns in no time. I guess someone might dither over guessing what everyone else ought to do, but the others could then just play a couple of wacky-but-quite- effective turns and mess with their heads and their strategies.

  • Thnx, Tom, this, and Steve Jackson are back on my radar, since the masterpiece Ogre.

Illuminati was good, also, but Fluxx killed me. I'm SO HAPPY to see that he MAY be back...

Thnx Tom Vasel, but, more importantly: Steve Jackson!

  • Umm, Fluxx is nothing to do with Steve Jackson Games.

  • @CheroChess Ummm... I'm confused. Fluxx is a Looney Labs Game, not SJ.

  • Thank you SO much for this review.

As a great Munchkin fan (we had a discussion about that under your Munchkin Booty review), I'm following SJ games and knew about this game, but had no idea how you actually play it.

By the way, I don't know about the other SJ games, but Munchkin has a high quality. Great art work, funny jokes, good lay out of the cards. They might only be too expensive (especially the newest additions)...

The German Illuminati version also has good components.

  • I also passed over this at first because Steve Jackson hadn't put out a good game in years. I remain a Huge Illuminati and Ogre fan, and still like Classic Car Wars.

One play and I was hooked though. Wow, I thought SJ was just putting out Munchkin crap now.

  • Thanks for the timely review! I'm going to ConQuest NW next weekend, and Steve Jackson's "Men In Black" will be there demoing a LOT of his games, including this one. Being a former fan and current hater of SJ's work, I was just gonna pass on it until I saw this review; now I'll be sure to play lots of Revolution and consider bringing it home with me.

Here's to hoping Steve Jackson has learned a few things and gets back on his A-game!

  • my only gripe is that the characters don't have any art... it's just text.

  • We always say that "SJ Games" stands for S**tty Junk Games. Good to see this one breaks the trend!

  • @ptdnet Kind of ironic as GURPS is one of the highest quality RPS games out there.

  • perhaps the reason he made a game you finally like is BECAUSE of all of your critism... could be anyway... very possible that Tom Vassel is a partially responsible for this games quality.

also, loved the $20/gun to your head analogy. So true. I might very well pick this one up. I like the simplicity

  • Love it. Already some time ago was looking trough SJ web page for new games and found this. I fell in love with it immediately. Though I have not played blind bidding games that seems the most attractive and original feature of this game plus it also has SJ type of feel - revolution, conspiracy, world dominance, terror etc. (gold coins with Illuminati symbols on them) it all makes it very ''secrety'' and ''gloomy'' =)

thx for the awesome review, Tom!

  • I didnt like the "blind bidding" of Citadels, for it sounded fun, but in reality not really. This one sounds fun too. And the components are great :)) Would love to try it out.
