Thanks for everything guys! The shipping and the installation process went smoothly. Listening to Wilco again with both headphones working was totally worth the $25.
Not incredibly easy because of the size of everything (the video makes it look much bigger) but it works! Just make sure you have an eyeglass size phillips head and a steady hand and some patience!
I have successfully- well, I hope successfully installed my new headphone jack and want to say thank you for posting this amazing video! Unfortunately, my ipod classic is still not registering an output sound. I went to diagnostic mode and reset the device. I also checked the IO section on the menu and there was no tab for AUDIO. Are you able to help this poor soul?
@Persephone26 when you enter Diagnostic mode, select Manual, then IO, then Headphone Detect. It will then ask you to toggle the hold switch. Press the menu key to advance, once the test is completed. The next screen will ask you to insert and remove a set of headphones. It will test if the iPod recognizes that headphones had been inserted. Now this tests only the headphone jack itself, if these tests pass and you have no output; the issue would be with the main electronics board itself.
@DigiExpress I tried to follow your steps but it didn't seem to work. (My lcd screen is "bleeding" so I can't read the steps.) Everything else works on my ipod but it won't detect the headphones. I can still hear the default wheel click when selecting a song. All i can make out is HP at the end of the sentance under Manual ---> IO --> HeadphoneDetect, and it wont let me exit. I triplem checked everything and its all inserted correctly. Please Help!
@panoramicskater Yes, we have the parts as well as an Installation Service available. More information is on our website, to which there is a link on our YouTube channel page.
Im having a problem with My ipod is the same one Ipod video as in the video a 30 G, I bought it used online, when I received the the IPOD only one side would hear but if I take out the input jack a lil out Both sides sound good,3-4 months later I was watching a video but no music, When I insert the input the static connection sound Normal ,But no music, everything seems to play, including videos But no sound,1 day I tried and it work for 3 sec, Anybody knows what may be the problem??? thank you
@teveneyes the headphone jack itself would need to be replaced with a new unit. There is a chance that the logic board was damaged, but given your description it seems as though it is just the headphone jack. There is new real quick-fix for this kind of issue, which is a common issue. The headphone jacks are the most used part of the iPod (next to the click-wheel). With headphones being plugged in and removed hundreds of times, it is only a matter of time before it fails and needs replaced.
@zuma5278255424 The headphone jack audio quality is the same as the original Apple unit, there is no better headphone jack. You are correct in that the audio is controlled by a microprocessor on the logic board, it has only one setting for quality, beit through the heapdhone jack or through the dock connector at the bottom. However, when using the dock connector for audio output; you tend to get a better signal. Most of that improvement comes from what ever device the iPod is plugged into.
@zuma5278255424 for certain devices you will have a set of electronics on the jacks themselves (internally obviously) and these will aid in clearing up noise or things like that. Most of the output is through a standard TRS connector (which is Tip, Ring, Sleeve connector). If you hit wikipedia and look at TRS connector you will find a host of information on this topic.
WARNING TO THOSE ATTEMPTING TO REPAIR YOURSELF! Do not attempt to open your Ipod unless you have ALL of the right tools (and the patience of a watch repairman). Thinking this would be an easy repair, I ordered a replacement headphone jack because the jack in my 5th Gen Ipod Classic had come loose and was now only playing to one side. After an hour of prying the clips holding the top from bottom case I managed to completely destroy my Ipod. I really wish I that I had sent it in.
@0m3n0fd3a1h We are actually a storefront that sells these parts to walk-in customers daily along with providing walk-in repair. If you are not local to our area then you can phone us and we will sell you the parts as would any other mail-order service. To find a retail type store that sells repair parts like this may occur only in California, Texas or Florida; simply because they are the most populated states and thus the demand for such a retail location would be justified.
I followed this process step by step with the Digitech headphone jack replacement part, and I ipod won't cut on anymore. I tried checking the battery and the harddrive ribbons to make sure that they where in good. they where in good, but the ipod wont cut on. what should i do??
@AcousticallySoulFul1 I would check for the connection on the logic board where you plug in the battery. the soldering on that small piece can be very weak and the connection can be broken at the solder joints. If you look at the connection and find any leads that are not attached to the board, then you would need a new logic board. The hold switch on the headphone jack may be stuck in the hold position also. Check the hold switch, you may need a magnifying glass, for any damage as well.
@BALEnaVICO You may need to have the headphone jack replaced. First use a different set of headphones to see if the problem persists. If you still have the problem then you may need to replace the headphone jack itself. We carry the part for the iPod Video or Classic model on our website if you would want to repair it yourself, or we have a Diagnosis / Repair service that can either Diagnose a problematic device or act as the labor in repairing the device.
I think this is the problem I have with my ipod, will you be able to tell me if this is it? A few weeks ago when I plugged my headphones in the screen started going crazy, but I put it on my icraig and it was fine. It has been doing this for a few weeks now but the music still played. Now when I try to plug the headphones in they will not go in all the way. When I try to force them in farther as they should be the screen messes up again. so is the headphone jack the problem with my ipod?
@laurasautographs That is a unique situation, though I believe that what has happened is the bottom of your headphone jack (the internal part on the iPod) has broken through and is allowing your headphone plug to move past the backend of the headphone jack. This would cause the jack to "hit" the LCD screen and cause damage. I cannot be 100% certain but I would start by replacing the headphone jack as it is less expensive than the LCD. You could also send it to us for Diagnosis / Repair service
@stoutevan The ribbon cable that connects the hard drive to the logic board is very delicate and you should try to avoid bending or stressing the connection when possible. So if you remove the hard drive it is just playing it safe.
This is unbelievable. Last week i got this link ipad2reward (dot) info from my friend. Normally i don't believe any of this shit. Thank you so much for this video!! My headphone jack was broken and I was so sad without my music and had no money for a new one!! I followed your video step by step, ordered a new headphone jack and it's fixed!!! Thank you!!! :)
This vid is great, I replaced the battery with your parts last year, the headphone jack went out recently. I got the part and replaced everything and it worked great until I put it together, any suggestions on what I should check to correct it, I would really appreciate it. Help..
@Shapbase I have seen situations in which the device will function properly while it is still disassembled then upon reassembly the functions are no longer proper. It this is the case then you may have a problem with the logic board (main electronics board). Though when you are reassembling the device make certain that all the parts are nested or seated properly before you completely close the iPod.
What about putting the battery back in? I'm gonna be doing this when I get my parts through, but I'm just a bit confused about putting the battery back in place since you took of the adhesive :S Please respond!
@ShErDdEr100 The replacement batteries that we sell have adhesive strips on them. You peel off the cover on the back of the replacement battery and the adhesive is there. You should seat the battery first to make sure you know where it will fit then remove the backing from the adhesive tape.
Is this company really trustworthy? I have an iPod Classic (160 GB version) with a broken headphone jack. How long would it take to repair that if i sent the iPod in?
@samp127 We can ship to international addresses. The time in transit may be longer than normal but we have assisted many customers from around the globe in repairing there devices. You can find shipping information on our website. When there you can put together an order for the parts and / or service you need to find the exact cost of various shipping options.
I fixed mine without replacing the headphone jack. The plastic on the bottom of the jack that stick up shouldnt be that way. In my opinion it breaks the copper contact overtime and creates this problem. I fixed mine using a heatgun for 2 to 3 seconds and flattened that plastic and another 2 seconds when it's soft and flat to the back of the ipod .This will do the trick without having to remove those tiny screws..Good luck
Please don't worry, we are running a little behind. However, we are working on February's orders, so if it has been a month, we may be waiting for a response from you about your order. You should contact customer service or log in to your account to see if there has been any updated information on your order.
@Jedijoe942 The first generation iPod Touch is very difficult to replace the Headphone Jack. It requires a very small soldering point (six of them) and you are working directly on the logic board, which makes it very easy to damage. We have a breakdown because the common DIY'er should not attempt the installation.
@Jedijoe942 For the iPod Touch 1st generation we have the replacement headphone jack at $19.99 and our installation service is only $25.00. Shipping would be additional if you are not local to New Kensington, PA.
Very helpful vid-- I combined this one with your battery replacement one to make upgrades to both ^_^. All went well thanks to your guidance and it's effectively as good as new, if not better :D.
@das9582 In some cases you may need to replace your mainboard, but without having a proper diagnosis completed it is unreliable to diagnose issues via the internet. We do offer a Diagnosis service for $25.00, which includes the labor associated with installing parts and testing the device after the repair. Visit our website for more information.
Hi i have iphone 3g but when i call no sound of ringing but press speaker its ringing also put on the headphone its ringing without that nothing no sound can u help me what should i do ?
It sounds like you need a new earpiece speaker, but without seeing it, I can't be sure. For just $25 plus the cost of the part, our techs will diagnose & repair it. Give us a call or visit our website for more information.
Followed all the directions exactly and made careful not to break anything and now my ipod has a Red X and wont work. I tried to put it in idisk mode and that does not work either. This is the second ipod i have had that has fallen victim to the poor audio jack construction.
@rattfink188 If you are looking for a fix for the "Red X" problem that is you hard drive and we sell that part on our website and can also install it for you. Check out our website for more information.
Hey do you think i could take a headphone jack from a ipod nano and switch it with my 120 gb and do you guys repair ipod at your location and can i send it to you?
@gh0sted1 The headphone jacks for the nano and the classic are different. You would need to purchase a new headphone jack for the classic in order to get it to function properly. We sell them on our website and can install them for you. Check out the website for more information.
hey i have a 30gb classic video ipod...i can hear the click wheel but not the music..it syncs, restores and downloads music perfectly..do i just need a new headphone jack or what?
@thresenuff Changing the headphone jack would help one of your problems. Send it to us and we can give you a complete diagnosis for $25. Check out our website for more information
question to ask you people.. iv got a problem with my headphone jack it either plays out of one or none ear-piece's, there obviously is a fault in the headphone jack and needs to be replaced. one thing i am curious about is if i will lose all my data which is on my ipod... so if someone can give me an answer it would be appreciated.....
@kingStardust Replacing the headphone jack will not delete your music. Your music is stored on the hard drive. We sell the headphone jacks on our website and we have a $25 installation. Check out our website for more information.
i got a question,i have an ipod nano with a camera, and i let my brother borrow it one night, and he dropped his books on it while at school,so,now i cant hear anything when i plug my headphones in but i can still play music from the built in speaker, what can it possibly be??
@bazie91 That sounds like a headphone jack. The iPod you have is the nano 5th generation. We sell the headphone jacks on our website. Check out our website for more information.
@bazie91 We can install the part for you. The price for the headphone jack is $19.99 and we have a $25 installation service. Check out our website for ordering information.
@kingStardust You should not have your data erased but the best solution to this problem is to get a wall charger so that you do not have to worry about if it will be lost. Also you would be able to charge the iPod from anywhere. We sell them on on website.
at first it didnt seem my ipod took to th enew headphone jack, it errored and a red circle and x came up saying contact support, i opened it up again and re fitted the wires and it seems to be working now.
Thanks for the great easy guide! I was able to take apart two iPods, one with a bad harddrive, and another with a bad headphone jack. I was able to replace the defective headphone jack with this guide. The only thing I had to do on my own was open the iPods, but i did that with a simple butter knife. Made my day! Thanks!
I followed the instructions in the video and my Ipod is back to normal...bought the headphone jack for 20 bucs.. thanks for posting the video. now here is a tip, do not remove the hard drive its not necessary; plus you can damage the hard drive cable or erase any files needed to operate your Ipod.. good luck
what serves as a good ground to discharge myself before opening up the ipod. Also i am planning on doing it infront of my desktop so i can watch this video, is that a smart idea?
i need to fix my 30 gig fifth gen ipod so does it matter what headphone jack i put in it because some say their for 60-80 gig but i dont know, could you help me?????
@DigiExpress what serves as a good ground to discharge myself before opening up the ipod. Also i am planning on doing it infront of my desktop so i can watch this video, is that a smart idea?
Thanks a lot, this saved me a lot of money. Though it was frustrating and I was pretty sure I would end up with a broken iPod, I did not. @xendersshadowx I also had a permanently locked iPod the first time, I had to open it back up and make sure that the hold switch mechanism actually toggled the switch it is attached to. After that, no problems.
I followed these instructions step by step but now my ipod is permanently locked. Tried all the easy hold down the two buttons blah blah advice (buttons & wheel have no response) and my ipod is not being recognized when i open itunes or my computer even though i hear it ding that i new device had been plugged in. any advice? I already ganked the video screen pretty good just trying to open it so i'm feeling like this isn't going to work...
@xendersshadowx It sounds like your hold switch is locked in the "hold" position. In addition, you may not have attached the hard drive ribbon cable correctly, which would cause your computer not to recognize it. Go back through the installation and make sure that both the hard drive ribbon and the hold switch ribbon are connected correctly.
How do you fix a sansa clip m3 players headphone socket though? Help would be GREATLY appreciated...please let me know if it's anything like an ipod. thanks
Will a 30GB Classic headphone Jack fit in a 80GB iPod (I think 6th Generation) fully functionally? The 80GB iPod became dysfunctional and I have a spare 30GB to use as a replacement. Any ideas?
Yes, however sometimes the problem is caused by the headphone jack connector on the main board, not the headphone jack itself. It is worth a try, that is not really a difficult installation.
Well. This took me about 30 tedious minutes. All of those tiny plastic clips seemed incredibly fragile and the screws are cumbersome at times. I'm not going to lie; all in all it's kind of a pain in the ass. Is it a better, more economical option than spending hundreds of bucks for Apple to fix it? You're damn right!
did this because i only had sound in left headphone. Now I have sound on both sides, but the mix is all screwy and I've lost the vocal track. Any theories?
Works great, but be careful opening case, I screwed up my LCD screen and now have to replace that. I have audio on both channels though, so I got that going for me.
Nice video! I changed the part without problem. However, I do only have sound in one side of my headphones. Does anyone know if I did something wrong or it is the replacement part that is not working?
Thanks this video really helped me out but when i tried to open it again i messed up the ipod battery connector so now my ipod doesn't work...any suggestions and or help!
after almost 3 months i finally fixed my jack. If your planning on buying a replacement buy one from a seller who gives a money back guarantee/ buy a jack that has the hold switch already attached, it may cost 3-4 dollars more but it SAVES a lot of trouble.
I have an 80GB iPod Video, the headphone jack moves around (with iPod closed), and when you wiggle it around, you might get the right headphone to work, otherwise, only the left one works, if you take it out halfway, both work, but it's very frustrating when it keeps popping out in my pocket, could this be a loose screw or somethin of the sort, because the whole assembly wiggles when you move the jack.
i just wanted to fix my ipod jack not break my ipod :/

This might seem like a silly question, but are some jacks better than others?
I.e can the line-out jack be better quality than that of my iPod, or does it only have to do with the sound card, or amp?

You should make a video for the Replacement of the 1st gen itouch headphone jack
Jedijoe942 11 months ago
@Jedijoe942 The first generation iPod Touch is very difficult to replace the Headphone Jack. It requires a very small soldering point (six of them) and you are working directly on the logic board, which makes it very easy to damage. We have a breakdown because the common DIY'er should not attempt the installation.
DigiExpress 11 months ago
@DigiExpress so much for saving myself some money on that. In that case is it even worth it to send it to you guys to replace?
Jedijoe942 11 months ago
@Jedijoe942 For the iPod Touch 1st generation we have the replacement headphone jack at $19.99 and our installation service is only $25.00. Shipping would be additional if you are not local to New Kensington, PA.

I just completed this and i still can only hear out of my left headphone? Help!
das9582 1 year ago
@das9582 In some cases you may need to replace your mainboard, but without having a proper diagnosis completed it is unreliable to diagnose issues via the internet. We do offer a Diagnosis service for $25.00, which includes the labor associated with installing parts and testing the device after the repair. Visit our website for more information.

Followed all the directions exactly and made careful not to break anything and now my ipod has a Red X and wont work. I tried to put it in idisk mode and that does not work either. This is the second ipod i have had that has fallen victim to the poor audio jack construction.

both are fifth gen
Beastandthebartender 1 year ago
@Beastandthebartender
They are the same headphone jack, however the 30GB plastic tip is contoured to fit the 30GB back plate, where the 60GB is not.
If you put the 30GB hpj in the 60GB iPod it will work fine, but it will not fit flush with the opening in the case.
DigiExpress 1 year ago
@DigiExpress so what can i do about that?

question to ask you people.. iv got a problem with my headphone jack it either plays out of one or none ear-piece's, there obviously is a fault in the headphone jack and needs to be replaced. one thing i am curious about is if i will lose all my data which is on my ipod... so if someone can give me an answer it would be appreciated.....

question 4u buddy
when changing/ having it changed by someone will you lose all your data which is on the hard drive??
kingStardust 1 year ago
@kingStardust You should not have your data erased but the best solution to this problem is to get a wall charger so that you do not have to worry about if it will be lost. Also you would be able to charge the iPod from anywhere. We sell them on on website.

Tried all the easy hold down the two buttons blah blah advice (buttons & wheel have no response) and my ipod is not being recognized when i open itunes or my computer even though i hear it ding that i new device had been plugged in. any advice? I already ganked the video screen pretty good just trying to open it so i'm feeling like this isn't going to work...
xendersshadowx 1 year ago
@xendersshadowx It sounds like your hold switch is locked in the "hold" position. In addition, you may not have attached the hard drive ribbon cable correctly, which would cause your computer not to recognize it. Go back through the installation and make sure that both the hard drive ribbon and the hold switch ribbon are connected correctly.

Are the iPod Earphone Jacks the same?
More specific, could I change a 80 G iPod Earphone Jack with A 30 G earphone Jack?
321NaMlaTeM 1 year ago
@321NaMlaTeM
An 80GB Classic headphone jack will fit in a 30GB Video, however an 80GB Video headphone jack will not fit in the 30GB iPod.
DigiExpress 1 year ago
@DigiExpress
Will a 30GB Classic headphone Jack fit in a 80GB iPod (I think 6th Generation) fully functionally? The 80GB iPod became dysfunctional and I have a spare 30GB to use as a replacement. Any ideas?
321NaMlaTeM 1 year ago
@321NaMlaTeM
Yes, however sometimes the problem is caused by the headphone jack connector on the main board, not the headphone jack itself. It is worth a try, that is not really a difficult installation.
DigiExpress 1 year ago
You're damn right!

after almost 3 months i finally fixed my jack. If your planning on buying a replacement buy one from a seller who gives a money back guarantee/ buy a jack that has the hold switch already attached, it may cost 3-4 dollars more but it SAVES a lot of trouble.
hippopcrazy 2 years ago
I have an 80GB iPod Video, the headphone jack moves around (with iPod closed), and when you wiggle it around, you might get the right headphone to work, otherwise, only the left one works, if you take it out halfway, both work, but it's very frustrating when it keeps popping out in my pocket, could this be a loose screw or somethin of the sort, because the whole assembly wiggles when you move the jack.
