Oh, boy! It's based on Asian stuff! That automatically makes it great and awesome! Never mind that it sounds like the cat got on the piano again, it's so free-spirited and stuff!
john cage did not MAKE this with the "freaking i-ching", he was just influenced by his studys of zen-buddhism and eastern philosophy to take up aleatory composition techniques as the one applied for composing this piece: he tossed a coin, by that allowing this piece to be created by a chain of coincidences, without any subjectivity.
the actual product of that technique in't even what's most important, this is all about initiating processes of creation, or concentrating creative forces.
"The score... consists of one to eight layers, with the layers spread over two systems in five-line notion. Each sound event draws its qualities from three of these charts or lists: a pitch, an interval, or sound aggregate, a duration, and a volume, each of which is determined on the basis of the 64 hexagrams from the I-Ching."
Haha...I hate Cage, I like his quote, though, "A 'mistake' is beside the point, for once anything happens it authentically is."...hmm, I know I'm taking it out of context, but that sounds like we could set Cage's music to a collage of the political campaign going on...
i still think this song is incredibly BAD for being so incredibly complicated. seriously. the guy make it with the freaking i ching of all things, and then comes out with THIS. this is what it sounds like when i play the piano (with my only experience being the week i had piano lessons when i was ten).
when you were a kid you had an open mind and didn't give a shit about what people were saying. You were doing what you felt know you are doing what is proper.
It made me dizzy...

He used the 64 volume hexagrams of the I-Ching.
