For non-space shuttle applications, I have found that an old friction belt drive is pretty simple and light,too---lever action, more tension, more speed. In any case, rigs like these are often underwieghted and tip in turns. No matter what, with a peppy engine, you will be flying compared to that method of locomotion.
45mph? With 4 passengers? Well, it appeared to go about 4.5 mph with 2 passengers. You do know that a simple chain-drive with a meager 15 hp B&S will do about that with your rig. Plus, that fan can't be good for you head.
Awesome. And when the zombie army attacks, just put it into reverse and do a Bruce Campbell! :-) But seriously - cool idea. And to all those safety freaks... c'mon folks... live dangerously already. We'll never make it back to the moon if we keep worrying about seatbelts and fan covers... :-)
that is really cool! I love it!.....however... I have this vision of your dad going to close to something and hitting the tip of the prop on a hard object, breaking one blade. Ever see a propeller separation happen to an airplane...ouch!

You need a parachute for it to fly. Actually they already have flying paraplane buggies.

Very dangerous with no propeller guard by your head!

no guard on that propeller! that won't get you an MOT surely.
Mind you, for hard rock videos this thing would be indispensable, great for clearing leaves off lawns...

One giant propeller, and one tiny mistake, makes one messy mess

The high ride height is a good part of the design
Add one of those speed bike carbon fibre bubbles for air stream efficiency

You're kidding me right? At least put a headrest up so you don't pitch back into it when you hit a speed bump.

though with wheel drive you need a transmission, which adds weight. This setup is very light.

All fun and games until someone doesn't see the propeler and GETS THEIR HEAD CHOPPED OFF!

Yea, I'd suggest a ring of some kind encompassing the propeller; similar to an airboat. ; )

Oh yeah, that looks completely safe...
Tell your dad to wear some goggles and a long scarf to better look the part of a pilot lol
