my fiance and i didn't realize that we prepare our meals in a fancy way...until our friends told us so. we thought it was normal, but to other people they thought it was special. one thing my fiance and i do..is we always prepare meals together, it's fun that way. sometimes, we'll make sushi and use the real sushi plates and chopsticks and go with the entire theme based on what type of food we're eating. or sometimes, we'll make a picnic on the living room floor. different things all the time.
... Continued ... Just to add, even with their occasional usefulness, eating with disposable material not only draws down many natural resources, it also produces a lot of junk too. Most of it does not get to be recycled. Back in time, Silver utensils were used as means of antiseptics!
Loved this one. When a great food is presented in a nice plate, it is just a better experience, and that is metaphorical and literal. It does not take too much to put that little extra effort. Some of that casualness is culturally peered, and some are even beneficial given different contexts, but why not always try for something special if/when possible. The extra effort is really about how we choose to live our life. BTW, this form and function balance is greatly studied and applied in design.

This is an awesome post! It always makes me feel better to put a little extra effort into my appearance- why not look nice? Plus the compliments my sweet friends and boyfriend give don't hurt either!
One Christmas morning, I decided to get up early and curl my hair, and wear a beautiful dress. My 4 year old cousin told me, "you look fancy". It made my day :)
I remember when I was a kid mom & dad used to get dressed up real nice to go out for dinner or get-togethers with folks. It was always really nice to see them look their best, even as a little kid I enjoyed seeing them do that. Sometimes Dad would splash a little of his aftershave on my face to make me feel handsome. Then Mom would come around and give me a kiss and pretend to get all googly when she smelled the aftershave on me. :) It pays off to get fancy once in a while.
I agree. Doing things that are saved for special occasions on the spur of the moment can really be fun. I enjoy going to Denny's on Monday mornings with my best friend. Mon and tues are his days off and that is a great start to his weekend. I think I am a little young to appreciate china but I can totally see eating pizza on china as a way to be spontaneous and fun lol. And wearing fancy clothes and dolling yourself up is showing yourself you are worth the extra effort.
