  • Thank you for this great review mate. It looks like a great laptop capable of great power for an affordable price. Looks like this might be mine in the near future! :)

  • Dont buy this computer with i5 processor, the graphic card is running up to 100 C*, its a Glitch, verry hard to fix. Big mistake i brought this.

  • @Thesickrager

I suggest you do a little bit of searching mate, a fix for that issue has been around since June 2010. You just have to download and update to the latest Vbios, from the MSI website to fix the issue, not hard to fix at all:P. When I bought my laptop last year it came with the latest Vbios already installed so no issue. Great laptop no problems with it!

  • @lionheartx10 I ordered this laptop and it's coming thursday, is there an easy way to check if it has the updated vbios? Or should I just monitor temps for a bit?

  • @zombie112

there is a way to check it, but I can't seem to remember it atm. Easiest thing to do is just monitor the temps, I use HWMonitor, if you need a link to this PM me. If its got the latest vbios it'll idle the graphics card at temps around 40-50C. if its 60C or higher then its the older vbios.

  • @lionheartx10 The laptop will be in my hands within about 3 hours, whenever the UPS guy decides to arrive. The one on MSI's site, released 5/16/11, would be the one to use, right? Thanks for the help!

  • @lionheartx10 It's idling between 50-60C. Should I do the vbios just to be safe? I haven't gotten into a game yet, still doing updates

  • @zombie112

update everything including graphic's drivers then check again. If it's still high-ish then update the vbios. If after that its still 50-60 its not a problem, just run a few demanding games and check the temps while running them. Any issues please do not hesitate to contact me via PM here on Youtube, I'll be more than happy to help!

  • @lionheartx10 Thanks for the help! I'm installing Crysis Warhead and BC2 to see how they go. , I ran the Cryengine3 SDK test map "Forest" and it got pretty warm and crashed, I don't know if it was due to heat or what, but the last monitored temp during that was in the upper 80's. I've then updated the vbios after that and ran it again and it got up to about 82.

  • @zombie112

hmm well 82C is fine, even up to 90 while gaming is ok, as long as the temps come down nicely. That crash may have been nothing. Try out some games and let me know preferably via PM.

  • Is the GeForce 250 you have (I think HAD as of now? lol) good enough for medium/high of Shogun 2?

  • @LoganLaromarr

haha yeah I'm on a GTX570 now :P The GTS 250 should be able to run medium/high on shogun 2 on dx9 mode.

  • @LoganLaromarr Okay, wicked, thanks!

Love the videos, keep 'em coming! :)

  • could you try the rift free trial? i would love to know how it handles rift...... if you still have the laptop that is

  • @terran698

Of course I have the laptop, hasn't even been a year yet of ownership :P I will add Rift to my list of games to benchmark.

  • 199 Pounds? How is that possible??? O_O

  • @grujcyk

?What part in the video do I say that?

  • Thanks for the review man. i am gonna buy this soon just because of its hardware and price range.

  • Hopefully might be getting one of these this years, i don't know when, but i'll definetly get it on or before christmas. Was looking at an Alienware but this fucking beats it!!!

  • was expecting G-SEX

  • Have you played shogun 2 on your GX740 yet? If so how well does it run?

  • @Clownfish1138

yes I have, runs very nicely - high ultra mix :)

  • I wanted to know how the keyboard is in typing and gaming, love its design however people have said keyboard is negative side of laptop because it stated that it feels soft and spongy as well as the idea of the heating does it get hot near the left and right mouse pad, just to compare the sound how loud am i looking at.

  • @SouljaBleach1

Typing wise I've done 5 essays so far with this laptop, I feel the keys are fine, you get used the to way they feel when you type, I woundn't say its a soft feel but its a bit spongy but as I've said you get used to the feel very quickly. People constantly conplain about the FN and CTRL keys being in the position they are however you do get used to that as well tbh. I've never felt any heat on the keyboard or near the trackpad. Sound wise I'm very impressed with the sound.

  • @SouljaBleach1

continuing with the sound, I'm listening to this video at a perfectly audible level at 50% volume, I've watched many a DVD off this laptop and had it at 100% and everyone's commented on how well they can clearly hear a dvd etc.

  • @lionheartx10

No Impressed with the sound, what i meant was the fan sound and internal sound of system like would it sound like jet engine when planning games or is it silent.

  • @SouljaBleach1

its not silent but its not noticeable when gaming :)

  • @SouljaBleach1

Also to that is there a keyboard that i can compare the feel to such as logitech new touch 200 or Microsoft curve 2000, as these felt in some way soft and i previously have owned however i was fine with them. What would you say about msi warranty in your experience many say its bad, and warranty is important factor to me, however i just owned a hp laptop and it took them 1 month to repair my screen which relay frustrated me (which made me never buy hp again :)

    Thanks

  • Ive got this laptop but very wary to flash my bios and video bios, which way did you do it? let me know.

  • @Arch3r1978

I didn't have to as it came with the lastest vbios and bios already installed.

  • Got this .. Was kinda happy with it .. Though theres a lot of stuff thats a minus .. Like the function button and the speaker quality .. also extremely noisy

  • @tore1992

I find some of that odd, my speaker quality is great, have you got the latest drivers, because the sound on the gx740 is often highly rated by most reviewers, i can agree with them the speakers should be very good, check that you've set it in the realtek sound management to 5.1, just remove the centre speaker if its selected. My plays back superb quality. in terms of noise check you have the latest Vbios it should fix it quite a bit, mine is never 'extremely noisy' always bearable .

  • @lionheartx10 Not always noisy, but when gaming the turbine is noisy compared to similar laptop cooler designs .. Speaker quality is that what I expected it to be, maybe perhabs I had a pair of harman/kardon in my old .. - VERY NICE :) ... The FN button is annoying on this laptop also.. IMO that is .. :) ..

  • Does the blue lights on panel interfere in the night?

  • @dipdip8 you dont notice them at all, they dont glare etc. not a problem at all

  • can you turn off the blue lights on the Panel?

  • @dipdip8

well you can just turn off the mode / setting thats enabled, but you can have the mode on without the lights.

  • The new GX740 is much better, i have to say. It has an i7720QM Proc. and 8GB Memory... Even it has the best graphics card, which is temporarily available for laptops (without double fired) . But even this GX740 is cool :P ... i bought the new one about 5 weeks ago, for 1200€ .. i didn't knew if it would be good, but MAN .. it'S GREAT ^^

  • where did you buy it from?

  • @alih15

novatech - do a google and it'll be the top result. They no longer sell this model however they do now sell a 15.6 inch remodeled GX660R which has an i5 processor and a ATi 5870 graohics card - They call it the Novatech iPro (intel core i5)

  • At first glance, it's a beast of a machine. One concern I have is about the screen viewing angles. I mean, the GX660-060US, wich is 15,6" and 1080p is amazingly powerful, but got mediocre viewing angles. Other issue I've heard on this one is about cooling (after some serious game playing, of course). Can you tell me something on these matters?

    Thanks.

  • @Baquebogogo

No cooling issues with the latest Vbios. My GPU temps idle at 50C-54C, maxes out around 84C most games only get it to mid 70'sC which is fine. Viewing angles can't say there's much of an issue, perhaps if you were gaming on battery and had the lowest brightness settings but overall its a nice bright screen with decent viewing angles.

  • what is with the alien ware comments, trust me there overated and this thing cost's nothing

  • what is with the alien ware comments, trust me there overated and this thing cost's nothing

  • great vid mate, best review on utube and ur one of the few guys that know what you are talking about :D

  • you have said that its a gaming laptop in the video so low battery life but i've been told it its 1 hour 15 mins max even on power saver, can you test this on the most powersaving mode while watching a film (dvd or video file) and if at all possible can you underclock (yes under) and undervolt to get max battery life.

  • @gothen1234

The laptop automatically underclocks both the CPU and the GPU to very low frequencies when you put it into Turbo Power saver, so no need to take it any lower as it gets clocked to as low as possible anyway.. I will do a test on a film etc on this setting in about a week when I'm home from university.

  • ...is there anyway to get that bag and mouse?...or are there any other Laptops that come with those items?

  • really nice review mate, im stuck between this and the MSI gx660r as they are similar price. The 660 has full HD and an extra 2 gigs of ram, but this has the 17' screen which is better for gaming than the 660's 15'.

  • i have the same as yours i mean, the specs are the same as well.. i almost play all the game in higher settings.however when i play metro 2033 and it sucks.

What if i change the processor i5 to i7 ? is there anything gonna be changed ?Also which i7 series can we exchange bcoz it has hm55 chipset..

  • One of the better youtube reviews I've seen. Added you on reviewroot . com (search for MSI)

  • @tobiaskierk

    Thanks mate !

  • Good review mate!! Like all your videos, im getting my MSI GX740 but with the i5 460M 2,53Ghz, and turbo boost up to 2.8Ghz. all other hardware are exactly like yours! Good to see that im able to play these games you have shown. Thanks alot!

  • feel sorry for peopke who don't have alien ware

  • @craphead224

haha I don't :P why pay quite a bit more just for a heavier more custom machine when this will do exactly the same performance-wise ?! Sure your paying for a name with Alienware and a certain amount of security with build quality, and heck I'd be tempted by one but not at their current prices as they are quite unreasonable !

  • hey where did u order the laptop from ?

  • @grahamw280

    links in the description.

  • Bought it at novatech, Can you tell me what came with it. i'm going to get one in JAnuary 2011.

  • @gazzy14

I show all the extras like the bag and mouse in the video. Do you mean any software?

  • @lionheartx10 That's the word, i couldn't think of it for a while.

  • @gazzy14

I don't think there was any special software with it, just the standard stuff that comes on it, like webcam software, but I bought mine with a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit preinstalled.

  • @chrisma1127

its not a problem at all lol You'd have to hold your mouse in a really far back position to get anywhere near the vent. Don't know how you arrange your mouse but it sits happily on the right side of the laptop no where near the vent. Plus the cooling on this laptop is quite good and its never been too hot. But either way you won't have your hand anywhere near the rear side vent to 'melt' it lol.

  • hey man, that was a very comprehensive and thorough video, thx a lot. cud you tell me how much u bought it for?

  • @guzzlinsoda

    £899 with Windows 7 64bit Home Premium pre-installed.

  • in the video you said that the laptop has "two vents for the vga". (on right side and on the back) does it have a vent for the cpu? bye !!!

  • @chochanga

There may be one underneath the laptop for the CPU, or I think most of the CPU heat is dealt with internal heat pipes, I can't check right now as I don't have my laptop with me for a few days, but I'll check when this weekend for you !

  • Can you please do a video or include it in an upcoming video about the webcam? Like when using Skype or example.

  • @Sarugaki

I'll see what I can do on that tbh the mic is very quite on it from what I've used it for so far but it might be better with skype. If I get the chance I'll try it out.

  • Does it have 2 slots for HDD ?

  • @gomerfa

As far as I know its only got 1 HDD slot

  • Alright, so I'm looking at buyng a gaming labtop, and I've narrowed it down to between the Asus G73JH-A1 vs this one. I'm going off to college next year and I'm going to use it for school work and playing games like Napoleon Total War and BFBC2 maxed out. Also being able to play Shogun 2 on pretty high, if not the highest, although it looks like it will rape every PC out there now. Im in the US so if I could get some opinons, that would be great.

  • @b0ywithhat

Well if your buying in the US use Gentech PC to buy from they are very good and they know their stuff !!! I have heard of quite a few problems with the ASUS G73, but as the guys at Gentech as seeing as your in the US you can get an i7 version of this laptop(GX740) !

  • @lionheartx10

Alright, so after doing some more research, I've decided on Asus G73JH-A1. Since its for college its nice having the extra 500 gig harddrive and having it to use as a blueray player. Anyway its gonna take me awhile to save up so some of the problems should be getting fixed. Thanks for the advise though. Also, I like your commentary better the the Prince of Macedon.

  • i have this one for 'bout 3 month... in mine the GPU idle temp is ~64"C =X ... after 2min from the start .. and while playin it rises to at most.. i think i saw 94" ...but i think it was due to the room temperature, normally it get 'bout 86 which still is quite high =X and for the processor the temperatures are similar..~50 degrees ... the mic sux ..for real .. but well.. not everything can be perfect...

  • i think that till now the only game that i had to play on lower settings than ..maxed out.. were GTA4 and Metro2033 DX11. The 1st one ... the i5 just have no enough power...the i7 would be nice in there.. and as for the metro.. DX11 support mean that you CAN run it...but forget 'bout smooth game ;) (maybe i wrote a bit 2 much O.o...oh well.. still there's a lot to say 'bout this one :) )

  • @werterb

Yeah I know about how demqanding CPU those games can be. GTA 4 inparticular due to its poor coding as after all its a direct console port = fail. I'll still do a benchmark for GTA4 and I'll try the METRO 2033 demo, but I'm not interested in Metro anyway so thats no problem for m :P

  • @werterb

I think you probably need to update your Vbios. I didn't have to as it already came with the latest one. But if you bought yours a few months ago. It will drop your idle temps to the same as mine with the graphics card.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for your good review.

I don't know if you've seen GX660 or not; it's said that its cooling system does much better that GX740. Have you had any heat problem with yours?

  • @Nusq7

NO, no heat issues here, my GX740 came with the latest Vbios already instealled for the 5870 mobility which underclockes it when its not in games to 1 extend battery life but 2 to also reduce idel temps to 45-52C. If you read wertb above post about his temps his idles at 64C, he needs to updated his Vbios and he will get some great cooling there. Also it only takes like a minute / 2 tops to go from high 80C to idle 50C again.

  • How about s/pdif? I do want this computer, but its useless for me if i cant plug it into my tv and surround sound system :/

Also, have you noticed any difficulties using the left hand side ctrl-button, seeing that its located to the right of the function-key, instead of the far more common location at the far left of the keyboard?

Thumbs up for a good review! // henchie

  • yea! google chrome high five!

  • Im jealous all i have is a shitty

    2.4ghz duel core

    2gb ram

    256 graphic card

That can barely run the empire total war on very low :(

Getting a new one though for b-day

    quad core 2.4 ghz

    4gb of ram

    556 graphic card

    im so excited!

  • @Jamesminson its better than mine mate. I duno exactly what mine has but it always loses video input with games like Rome Total War.

  • @kwlkid38

my cores are sufficient enough to run most games but then my graphics card lets me down big time

  • Lol my GTX 260 that's only air cooled idles at 37 degrees C

  • @PkerWhomerang

I only have like 1 decent fan in my case, plus its ageing a bit now. When I first got it it was idle at low 20's : )

  • @lionheartx10 sweet! Your peninsular campaign videos are coming along at what seems like 1 every few hours, keep up the good work!

  • Basically all i wanna know is how well it handles the Total War series, as i can play cod and stuff on my xbox :L

  • Glossy is nice :)

  • you should definetely try starcraft2 also is the i7 better than the i5

  • @boredboy1993

The i7 will do better in say video rendering and photo editing. genrally the i5 should be slightly better in general games over the i7. If I could have got an i7 I would have, but they aren't availiable with them in the UK unless you get it customised.

  • When you played the video, you should of put it in Video Mode as well.

  • @iProRyan

lol no need to it had the power connected , eco mode is for when your just on the battery as it dims your screen to the mode you choose. If I'd chosen it with the power in it would have dimmed the screen. No need to when the powers plugged in :P

  • Laptop mics tend to try and pick up everything in the room, which is fine. Just run the audio through Audacity when you're done recording (use the noise removal effect) and everything's fine. Something realtime though, like Skype, might be annoying for the listener.

  • Your screen resolution covers 720p which is fine. There's plenty of real-estate to work with on your screen.

Even with an i5 this laptop is an amazing deal. Once again I'll say good call.

  • Are you still benchmarking ArmAII?

  • @FluffyThe1337Panda

is there a demo of it? if so yes I will benchmark it.

  • @lionheartx10 yup theres a demo on steam.

  • @FluffyThe1337Panda

Great I'll get it downloading while I'm at work today : )

  • Ah, you got the dual core i5 for that much? I'd have paid the extra 50 pounds or so just to get the quad core i7...those extra 2 processors make more of a difference than most people would like to think, especially considering multi-threaded programs are becoming more mainstream by the day. Great video Lionheart, looking forward to the benchmarks.

  • @PrecociousPanda

The extra cores would help if you do insane video processing or some serious graphic design, but for gaming their effect is null (aka not worth the 50 pounds if you aren't going to use it)

  • @PrecociousPanda

as I said in the video, you cannot get one with an i7 here in the Uk, the US version ships with an i7, the european ships with an i5.

  • First! ^_^

I was just about to sign out when I noticed this video hahah Congratulations! It's a beast of a card, really is. I look forward to watching the Crysis benchmark.
