okay so i just started starting strength today but when i did the deadlift i felt it more in my legs than my back...well to be honest i didnt even feel anything in my back..is this normal or am i doing it wrong ??
@ilnn408 This is generally only a problem with people who have very short arms. I am one of those T-Rex armed folks who is affected by this, and it sucks; the bar has a tendency to pow me right in the nuts, not because they hang obscenely low, but because my arms are so short that's just where the bar ends up. There isn't a real good fix to this, if arm length is the issue. Wear a cup while pulling, maybe. I just try and grin and bear it, generally it doesn't hit tooo hard.
I think that you start with it in your mid-foot. when you begin the lift your knee creases and your shin moves towards the bars and so you end up with the bar on the shin.
should I be in pain if it was done wrong cause im not, I did the squat right but the whole lifting up your shins are u suppose 2 do that even with a lot of weight cause if im right ive seen videos of people were its about 2 inches away?
244 pounds is very light when it comes to the deadlift, so you have nothing to worry about, but you should do it as is in the video before you start pulling big weight
If you want a max deadlift you should not have the bar toutching your legs at any point in the pull besides your lockout. This is the opposite to what ripptoe coaches. Did Andy Bolton scrape his shins when he nailed 1008 lbs? No he didn't.
This requires a more upright posture and taxes your back more which means it will be harder to keep your lower back from rounding. This moves more weight but wont be safe unless you have a really strong back.
@Midgert89 You are right, but Rippetoe is a coach for beginner/intermediate lifters. If you are deadlifting over 650 lbs, you are in a different league, and technique may/should be altered accordingly.
Theres an article of Andy Bolton talking about the deadlift. And I quote..
"Once the bar's moving, keep it close to your body. All good deadlifters have marks of pride on their shins. If the bar drifts out in front of you, it will put a lot of stress on the lower back. "
He says over the ball of the foot, but visibly, isn't it more like over the arch? In the other vid he says it's at the centre of the foot, to me the centre seems to be the arch, the ball seems to be more forward of that. The ball is only more centre when the heels are raised off the ground I think, rather than when they're on the ground like in most weightlifting movements.
after he puts it over the balls of her feet, gets her set up, he has her THEN rooollllll the bar back to her shins. at this point, it will be over the center of the foot.
very informative. Thanks!!!!!!

@TTorance1 Is this Mark Rippetoe?

Why does he say position halfway on your whole foot, then later tell her to roll it into her shins? Dosn't that change the bar position.
00JakeR00 2 years ago
because your knees are bent, the bar will meet your shins if the bar is halfway over the foot
shadowscion 2 years ago 7
The bar rolled forward a little at 1:30

right after he tells her to roll it back a bit to correct it

@ThePurple0range I have a mark of pride on my left shin. Everyone is always like
"Heeey, what happened to your leg?"
and I'm like,
"Deadlifting :)"
and then they go,
"What's a deadlift? :S"
