Even if in your mind you'd think it'd be better if he weren't normal and had powers, I guess it would be that him being the only normal one in the brigade makes it comical. It wouldn't have been as good (in my opinion) if he were weird as it would just normalize the concept and would be less entertaining, as well as their journey being different.
