everybody who experienced extrem brutality knows that theres nothing shiny or cool about it. its just suffering of others or of yourself, and if you are not already a psycho, your soul/brain get severe damaged of this experience. of the visual experience, the smell, the screams etc. to show that an audience, who probably expected to get feeded again with all this weird and wrong clichee-violence, hollywood normaly spit out, is a merit of this movie in itself.
In this movie (the original version) the perpetrators do some bad things, but these things are nothing in comparison to what *YOU* wish the family would do to them.
All the worst parts are the parts that didn't happen, the parts you wished would happen, the parts you expected to happen.
The movie exposes the viewers own mind to themselves. It can be unsettling to discover you want to kill someone.
US movies also tend to focus in on the clues a lot, "*look* there are scissors on the table, see them, yes scissors, they are important later, got it, ok hold the shot another 10secs" It's super dumbed down.
This movie uses that device to overload you with meaningless clues and false plot-lines. From your mental library of silly films you extrapolate each of these clues to where they would "usually go" and then that idea is used against you a scene or 3 later.
OK so the intentions of the film were obvious once the Zorn began playing during the "family drive to the lake house" scene. Audiences were faced to come to grips with their (perverse?) desire to see a gore flick...some get this and some don't. The timing of the film was impeccable, being that the gore flick genre has been churning out bloodgushing garbage for the past five years or so (Saw 1-Infinity, Hostel(s), House of Wax, etc.).
The remote control scene was just the director explicitly mocking the audience. The two blonde headed villeins are bound to win from the outset, because one of them, the smarter one, is aware that he is in a movie. The director is trying trying to make you ask why you are watching, when you already know the outcome.
the film wants to get you down thinking...it wants u to hope...and the remote controle destroys ur hope...so it gets u down...and the open end maks u think...it illustrates a scene we hear all day on the raidio thinking:"one more"...the film shows us how sick we are...it shows us our "normal world"...i like the end...somehow...i dont know why...this film is one of the very little group of films which realy touched my feelings...not in a good way...but i like this film...somehow...
I think the rewind is to defy conventional narrative, so show that there is no escape and that the film will not have a happy ending, so all you have ahead of you is violence that you are complicit in. The whole film is about the complicity of viewers watching violent material.
I was thinking this movie is showing us an alternate universe where's these two young men have been killing the same dwellers for an infinite amount of time. The rewinding may have been going on the entire time and were just allowed to see it at that particular moment. These two young men have some how taken over this universe, the power both excites and bores them. Toying with the humans is merely a game.
chemicalnovafilms, while i do agree with what you're saying, and that the rewind scene can be used to enrage the viewer, perhaps it is also used as a tool to establish whom the viewer is routing for in their twisted games. in connection with what you said, in our craving for violence, is it not possible that we wanted the murder to be undone, thereby exposing some madness within us? also, solvent, i completely agree, the camera work was incredible, particularly in the "hot/cold game" scene.
You're telling me, man. I was watching this all alone the other night and this shit came on and I had my TV on pretty high, and it made me about fucking piss myself. lol
No, the scene where she untied herself and turned off the television was to build a sense of relief that she was escaping, as well as to build on the horror of the body of Georgie and his death, so you realise the gravity of his death..
Best film I've seen in ages, the first film in years to scare me with it's camera work alone.. Master work in tension
i completely agree on the camera work. it was amazing. and the scene where paul is in the kitchen and you just hear the gunshot was so intense. it's such an incredible movie.
wasn't scary... and i didnt get it... likes pointless and hopeless i dont understand why those dumbasses would go through an entire 12 hour period of playing their ridiculous games rather then the wife and kid just get up and run out of the house.. and why is the child so fucking stupid to go to the neighbors house where paul and tubby were already at, obviously they are dead.
The part where he rewinds it is a sort of punishment by the director for our vicarious voyeurism into the torture happening in the film. We all want a happy ending in violent movies like this but he takes it away from us. Genius. Delivers his message with no doubt to what he wants us to see and feel.
No, the point of the rewinding bit was to piss you off cause you were happy and relieved that she killed him and everything was going to be ok, but with the rewinding bit was to, I gues to make you think what was I thinking? Thats the whole point that that the drector is trying to get at, this movie is asking @Why do we watch movies with with such violence and sadism in it? Because we enjoy it, right? But if it happened in real life, we would be digusted and horrified wouldn't we? Have a think
This movie, along with this son froze my heart. I've never felt so intimated in my life. Haneke couldnt have chosen a better song. I broke from inside my head for one minute and craped my pants.
THE BEST FUCKIN THRILLING CREEPY MOVIE IVE EVER SEEN OUT OF TEN I GIVE IT 300 AN OVER RIGHT NOW ITS MY FAVOURITE MOVIE ALONG WITH CLOCKWORK ORANGE AND AMERICAN GANGSTER
yea but the original works much better when Paul breaks the fourth wall, and the fact Naomi Watts isn't in it makes it better too, she just doesn't suit the role. Check out the 1997 version
The movie could have been so fucking good but damn the producer was such an anti-conformist-conformist-dont-wanna-be-a-wannabe-and-i-wanna-try something-different-just-to-be-different-at-the-cost-of-wasting-my-movie
It is the same soundtrack from the original film. I think Michael Haneke made a wise decision. The song is a statement in itself. Choosing to do a remake was risky but at least he kept an independent feel despite box office actors. Which opens the door to greater audiences. It is not about being loud and angry it's about capturing material in it's raw form, even if it is to be portrayed through torture and murder in this film.
that song was the one thing I didn't like about this movie. I get that they wanted to use a loud angry song, but they could have picked something else.
Great film, but don't let it settle into your mind as Haneke's full potential. This film is unlike his other films, all of which are great.

Hollywood uses this a lot the other way around. They'll have a character everyone hates, an old bossy lady or something.
Then when they get brutally killed halfway through the audience of mums, dads and good natured people cheer with delight.
