most unknown Trower masterpiece EVER! Closest I've ever heard him sound like the Band Of Gypsies version of Machine Gun. the singing and the lyrics are all time. Trower just totally goes off and the words just keep driving to go ballistic.
"he'll never get there!" Easily one of the greatest Hendrix inspired songs of all time: great surf soundtrack: "HE"LL NEVER GET THERE!
the tone on the guitar and the improvisation is so fluid....unbelievable.
Hands down one of the best F*%$#g songs of all time. The Only other song that I would dare to compare would be Stevie Ray Vaughns version of Voodoo Chile Slight Return . Better than Hendrix' Version in my opinion. There are TONS of really good guitar players - some are even better than really good . And a tiny percentage make the next round and get labeled great . Then there is the Creme De La Creme . Boyz And Girlz This is one from the top half of that distinguished group . ROCK ON 4-EVER
I was a fan back in the 70's and by the early 80's, I didn't like the direction he was going with albums like Caravan to Midnight. It was still good, but just slow and dreamy, not raging and Hendrixy. He was playing in the Bay Area and I had tickets and figured I should get his newest album before seeing him live, but didn't have time to listen to it until I was on my way to the concert. This song blew me away. Now I'm trying to remember whether he played it live. One of his best songs ever!
@scott93933 totally agree. This song really surprised me. The meanest Hendrix/Machine Gun song Trower ever did in the middle of a lot of mellower material.
Benny Dancer is one of the all time best. Rolling bass and desperate lyrics and Trower just goes off as close to Band of Gypsies as he ever sounded.
fantastic soloing with great lyrics, singing and that bass line. You can almost lay this solos over some Miles Davis, who also inspired by Machine Gun,...Right Off for example.
very influenced by Machine Gun by Hendrix. One of Robin's favourite album's of all time is jimi's Band of Gypsy's which has a stellar version of Machine Gun on it.......this track was on the last album Rob did with Jimmy Dewar........wish Jimmy and Jimi were still alive !!!! RIP guys. Rock on Robin

Haha I am another Trower fan who rates this song as his best ever. Just awesome especially that opening phrase to the solo.. kills me every time. Off to see him in Derby Sept 2010 , can't wait.

speaking of some of the Trower songs that really tap into the Hendrix thing is this gem I found browsing the YouTube treasure chest. Check out Into The Flame, the Detroit concert. fricking Machine licks left and right.
and that lighter fluid tone. ahhhhhhhhhhh!
thanx for the cool discussion of one of THE most obscure and underrated "fusion/rock/blues" cuts ever.
BENNY DANCER,....."you'll never get there--------"
most obscure, absolutely heaviest Trower song ever.
couldn't believe I've never met anyone who knows this ever existed. the bass line and the lyrics are as serious as the great Hendrix songs Machine Gun and Hear My Train.
I'd actually love to hear Mclaughlin take shot playing this.
or Duarte, or any of those still playing that can get INTO THIS!
I've seen Trower over 20 times and he never did this song live, but it's the most amazing guitar work on an album I ever heard....glad you enjoyed it!
Thanx again. glad to know I'm not the only one on Earth to think this highly of a totally unknown masterpiece.
from the lyrics and the kick ass singing, to the guitar playing and the effects he has going on his strat, this performance is just plain kick ass.
I'm a bodysurfer and if you want the ultimate surf movie experience, dial up Bodyboarding Teauhopo Bodyboard 2003 and open a new window and then listen to Benny Dancer and you will have the best surf movie ever!
does anyone know if he ever did this one live? I'd give anything to a live performance of Benny Dancer. The lyrics are great too.

He will never play this live. It is the single best example of what a guitar legend he is. My favorite of his songs.
