That is inexperience... Use the winch, the boom and lift it up and out. The driver should NOT be in the car and shouldn't need to assist. It comes down to training combined with common-sense.

Tow truck driver was an idiot. You NEVER let the customer get in the car while it's being pulled out. Big no-no. Second, he should have just backed up to it and used the boom with its hydraulics to gently pull the car out, not yank it with a chain and a j hook. If he worked for me, he wouldn't after this.
