I'm sorry people, but that's not hard. At all. I've been on pointe for like two weeks. An hour and a half on pointe and I can do that. I mean, I've been on flat for a few years and all, but honestly, that's the first (and only :P) thing I learned to do on pointe and it's easy for me.

Not necessarily. Detached thumbs is one of the most recognizable features of Balanchine's method/style. I personally prefer the thumbs tucked away, as you do, but plenty of people prefer "free" thumbs. You don't see much of Balanchine's work on Youtube because the Balanchine Trust works very hard to have videos featuring his work removed for some reason.
