Adrian is the smartest man on earth and can catch a bullet...so obviously he can move faster then a normal human being, which is how he easily doges the assassins bullets. The assassin was there to kill him, and he had no clue Adrain had hired him. Adrian slipped a cyanide pill in the assassins mouth and forced him to break it.

@Dracinard SPOILER ALERT Did you watch the movie? If so, you (and several other people here) seem to have missed some major plot points. The assassin was hired by Adrian to kill his competitors. He was shooting at everyone in the room BUT Adrian (why the secretary is a prime target I'm not sure). Adrian then murders him to protect himself from being exposed.

@fsfsfsfsfsfsg No, which is way that tidbit wasn't in the normal cut of the film. Actually, I think that's the only addition to this scene in the Director's Cut. The leg part was still in it though, no clue why they shot the secretary at all.

@ZeeZedZee haha, Well its because most of this scene is just made up, in the comic! the assassin was in a big open hall While Adrian Walked (talking happily ) with his secretary, and she was a little more close to the bounty hunter so he try's to shoot Adrian but shoots the secretary, the shots one time, the Adrian picks up the yellow thingy and reflects (or just stops) a bullet (pretty bad as :P) then hits the guy! in this scene hes supposed to move really fast, but one cannot tell !

matthew goode was great as Adrian Veidt because he made his villainy very subtle and also made him a very tragic character. Adrian truly wanted to save humanity but could ultimately find no way around human's inherent aggression so he had to get dirty in order to get humans in line.

I like the slow mo in this scene as it shows just how fast Veidt is. However, Matthew Goode did a horrible job bringing the character to life, bad casting decision IMO.

I think Goode is more of a subtle actor (at least in the two movies I've seen him in: Leap Year [Good God was that BAD...] and Watchmen, which, aside from the sex scenes, wasn't all that bad). If there's any actor we should be persecuting, I vote Laurie's actress, whatever her name is. Goode isn't half as bad as her.

As for shooting, Veidt is no doubt being aimed at and is trying to lure the assasin out of the elevator, in the meantime taking cover behind various people. I guess it is not so easy to get close to someone who is in a very confined space, not even for Veidt.

And can anyone seriously imagine a PIZZA being delivered to VEIDT's OFFICE? Pretty sure it's a box of long-stemmed roses, much like Arni had in Terminator.

What's so difficult with Veidt's hand on assassin's mouth? Veidt *pretends* to fixate his jaw so assassin cannot crush the capsule and get poisoned. He states it perfectly clear when he says "Don't bite down!" So Veidt expects (pretends to expect, that is) that instead of killing himself the assassin will spit the capsule and give him name. Although, of course, there is no reason why assassin should comply.
