I guess my first post didn't take-I don't think it was that the announcer thought FC's loss was more disappointing, I just think SJ's was a "buzzer beater" type heartbreaker. It looked like SJ HAD it late in the Belmont stretch, he was leading by daylight and he got run down by Birdstone...It was more "devastating" because you could taste that TC victory with SJ. Funny Cide was out of it earlier in the home stretch, EM pulled away. Still devastating, but the emotional swing wasn't there.
@dbjr8 Also it could've been argued that Empire Maker was just better than Funny Cide overall he just got beaten in the Derby in a crowded field. Smarty Jones was hands down the best 3 year old in 2004 so to see him go down was worse. You're point about seeing daylight was also a big factor
I don't think it was that the announcer was less disappointed when Funny lost, I think SJ was more of a heartbreaker because we thought we had a triple crown winner late in the stretch....Smarty was leading by daylight and he got caught right before the wire. Funny was out of it early in the stretch-you knew he was going to lose...I think it is that you have a moment elation with SJ and then get crushed when he gets caught-Kind of like when Real Quiet and Silver Charm get caught AT the wire.
I hate how in 2004 the announcer was all upset when Smarty lost, but not that upset when Funny did. What's up with that????? I love FUnny, it's not like he had less a chance of winning, just cuz he was a gelding. There is Lava Man, Cigar, all the greats were geldings, why is he so less passionate to Funny in the Belmont?
This was in my mind the day he could have beaten any horse in training that day. He was ready to explode, and he sure did that. Later on he won by just sheer guts, and in someways those races were even more impressive, as I have said before wasn't a Great racehorse, but he was one tough S.O.B.! I'll take one like him anytime,he was as honest as the day is long. If he was near the lead at the 1/4 pole he would fight you for it! Hail the "gutsy gelding",the perfect nickname for him!
One of the great days of racing. And he should have taken the Belmont, but so many forces staking against him. Sad. And yet he won a Grade One at 4. No other Kentucky Derby winner had done that for years. He also went out a winner. My fave rave. Right up there with Silky Sullivan.
Chills.
