It's the Lastolite EzyBalance Greycard which Mark uses for calibration purposes. There are video's by Mark on our website and on Youtube explaining how this product works.
Saw you at Focus on Imaging 2010 doing a tuitorial Mark. Absolutely superb and a great sense of humour too. Your knowledge on photography is great. Everyone was engrossed and I noticed you had the biggest crowds too. Best wishes to you
Just what he says while taking photos, its like a routine text he memorized... "Look at me..... Happier.... Again... Happier..... straight at me.... happier"
If you haven't already notices, during the shoot the speedlight did not recycle. I am seriously doubting using ezybox for shooting over 3m away from the subject.
If i have to do this job, I will drag my Ranger with the beauty dish and accomplish with a direct speedlight for rim highlight.
Its not a problem with the Ezybox, just the recycle time on the speedlite, as I usually use a quantum battery attached to each speedlite to shoot every 1.1 seconds.
In these videos we are just using the speedlite battery power so a slower recycle is needed.
Note to self - Shoot Slower when just using Batterys
You should under expose the ambient light on those sky shots to give more drama. Your lighting looks flat. Also they way you interact with your subjects needs improving, shouting "Happier" is not gonna make then do anything except think you are a dobber!

I will post up a video soon on how to really use strobes. The whole purpose is to give the background a dramatic look while the subject is well light in expensively. What he is doing is shooting in auto mode and letting the camera do all the compensation. like i said before set to manual. For a day like that shoot between 1/125th -1/250th, f. 5.6-f.9, to under expose the camera lighting, and iso 100 for clarity and watch your results. you only need flashes at 1/2 -1/4 power 7-15 ft from subject

he needs to really start shooting in manual mode. From the looks of his of his horrible photos, looks like auto mode with hard flat lighthing.. then to top it off he moves around all fast and talks fast like hes a professional. what a noob!! lol. Set your camera to manual mode, and if you want dramatic blue skies set the shutter speed to 1/125th, set the apeture to 5.6 for shallow depth of field, and set it for iso 100 for clarity. an under exposed camera with off camera flash = great pics
This guy makes a ...... I do not hink it so god to learn the photography, because this lighting is just bad..... this guy is not a prof. photograpfer. sorry it is just my oppinion.
Key thing here you people need to understand this "Strobist" Thing has ruined how newbies are learning.. First and and foremost "Softboxes" were never intended to but used with "Hotshoeflashes" THey were designed to be used with "Bare" tube heads. With the light scattering all around inside the box not like the hotshoe were its shooting straight out the front panel. Bouncing inside the box makes the light soft. If it isnt then looses a large degree of its softness.
I agree that a bare bulb will give the optimum performance in a softbox, no question. My general problem with this example is the distance that he has the softboxes from the actual subjects. The max softness is governed by the size of the light source relative to the subject. I would daresay that at the distances he has the boxes from this subject, there would be little discernible difference between a speedlight or barebulb. Better off with big umbrellas at that distance, cheaper too.
Nice set of videos, with some good tips. But about the Lastolite Ezybox aren't they a bit small for that kind of sessions? The light looks a bit harsch. Anyway, could highly recommend Q39 80 x 120 cm from Photoflex also a nice softbox.
this guys photos suck
