Such incredible skill. I love how she does this from the heart... it truly shows. Magnificent, peaceful, and calming. This brought a tear to my eye, after a hectic day. Thank you so much, Brooke.
I've been listening to clips on Candyrat Records this morning. Just wanted to say I picked up two copies of "You Can See Everything" and the very LAST copy of "Shake It Off" from Amazon.com this morning. Time to stock 'em up again, Brooke.
I also wanted to say: it's soooo much fun to be excited about what's coming in the mail. I can't wait to receive the CDs.
I just can't move away from this song - it is so excellent . She should be award winning-best selling - #1 female singer/songwriter-Few artists today have her skills-and many have none at all.
I love you Brooke, as an struggling artist with the deepest respect for you and Don. May your wonderful creations fill the heart and souls of mankind forever.
Just read the comment above about Brooke having an Irish accent, did someone really say this? I know absoluely nothing about where she grew up but the only way you could think she sounds Irish is that you have no idea what an Irish accent sounds like.
It's hard to believe Brooke used to tour the Maritimes as young as 12 years old and played in an angsty punk band for many years... actually, i take that back, its not hard to believe that she was that talented when she was young when you look at her now & plenty of great songwriters came out of the punk scene, so I'm just being foolish. I need to catch her live sometimes.
In my opinion, there is nothing more sexier than a girl that can play the guitar and sing well! I'm glad there are still indie artists out there, that write music from the heart. Sometimes I forget. I'm reminded today. I would rather hear your story, instead of people trying to please the mainstream. Now, where's my guitar.
people need to understand just how hard it is to do what she is doing. singing and strumming guitar is one thing... but to sing and play guitar like that, in finger-style, is incredible. round of applause.
Hi Friends & Fans, I've got a brand new acoustic record out on CandyRat! 'Shake It Off' is selling like hot cakes and a brand new video too with over 20,000 views just since Nov 12th!! PLUS, I finally have GUITAR TABS for a few of my songs on Candyrat.com Thanks so much for all of you requesting a new record and TABS. I'm listening, and have delivered. Means a lot to be in touch with you all, Look for German, EU dates in summer 2011 all the best, Brooke

Wonderful compo and playing, nice voice, but when, when, when is this fashion of singing with an awful Irish accent going to stop ? Every woman singer now has to use an ersatz Irish accent. Sick of Irish accented singing.
@nicbordeaux Hi there! I'm married to Brooke, and I can attest to the fact that this is NOT an example of a "woman singer" using an "ersatz Irish accent." Brooke is from Prince Edward Island, on the east coast of Canada. In addition to the Mi'kmaq native population, the two biggest immigrant communities on the Island are the Irish and the Scots. Brooke speaks with a gentle PEI accent, which she simply can't help. We now live in Nova Scotia, just down the road from PEI. It's NATURAL!! Believe me
Sorry for the rest of us on the Internet, Don; collectively, we, by and large, just don't get it. But, on occasion, like tonight, the 17 of September, 2010, I look at the work of your wife and cry. And I remember shedding a tear over what you do, as well, as the founder of the Canadian Fingerstyle Explosion, IMO. Apologies, from all of us. Cheers, Mate and Matey! Thank you for the rare experiences of being able to say, "Yeah! I'm a human, too. And we rock."
@DonRossMusic... not surprised at all...have seen your beautyful Island on pictures and someday if I still have time I will come and see the home of the "kindred spirits"...I don't see why your wife should have to justyfy her accent to the listeners...maybe I'm missing something...enlighten me please...

@DonRossMusic please! please! please! come back to cape breaton soon >>>>>>>and dont come without brooke<<<<i missed her set last time in halifax <<<i was pissed <<<please come soon<<<
@DonRossMusic ignore the ignorant youtube trolls. This can only sound irish to untrained ears (I have been guilty of erroneous irish accent identification on YT videos myself in the past). What "nicbordeaux" fails to account for is that, as you have said Don, the vast majority of the population of Canada and the USA is made up of immigrants from parts of Europe, including many from Ireland. The many american and canadian accents are massively influenced by irish which shows especially in song.
@nicbordeaux No idea from where you're getting your vitriol, unless it's some form of jelly-belly.
This is as authentic a Maritime accent (my home) as you get and it's nowhere near an 'Irish' accent--real or affected. True, for people with a tin ear, the Maritime accent, made up of the elements from where we come--Irish, Scottish, French, etc.--is going to sound different from the typical accent found in central Canada and might sound like any number of things it is not. But you're way off.
Yeah lets all go out and buy some shit music being pumped out by the machine, while artists like this exist in relative obscurity. Its fucked.

Man, I've been in studios before. I'm no stranger either. But saying something such as "There is very little talent out there today" blah blah blah. You clearly have no idea what it takes to make it as a musician, look all over Youtube and tell me that there is no talent out there. Mainstream music isn't all bad, you probably listen to the "hits" radio. That's not mainstream, it's "hits" go on actual mainstream radio. Learn how to spell and use proper grammar. Damn -.-
@LeVictoriaLovesJosh ,ok man first before you start talking realize where we are when you start questioning my taste in music ( brooke miller youtube video). and i dont listen to the radio because its awful. now why dont you go back to "making music" with fruity loops, listening to lady gaga and making weak ass comments on a page otherwise beautiful. and you say look at what else is on youtube, and no tall mainstream music is bad, well yotube isnt mainstream music, now is it. so wtf are you syng
@LeVictoriaLovesJosh oh and by the way i dont give a fuck about my grammar, im sure you learned how to sound stuff out in speech class because of that giant lisp you have , faggot
@strangehero420 I'm not angry lmfao. I'm just saying, your intelligence is lacking. I thought you'd understand if I used more simplistic wording. KayThanxBai.
is this supposed to be sad or like a song of taking a stand on whats right .......i hear anti military anti elitism, well maybe not anti military but anti this military...ive always equated love for my land with loyalty to the army but now i understand im joining the opposition and never going home (powerful wrds that have been ringin in my head since i heard them) thank you for writing music that makes me think and is close to my heart.. p.s. i cant beleive you stole my women don
Brooke, can you please post some tabs on candyrat for this song? or just send them to me. I love this song! everything about it. You and your husband are my idols!
@johhnalexander If its any help to you john the guitar is tuned DGDGBD. its a good open tuning. thats from thick string to thin, and if you notice she has her capo on the third fret.I like the way she plays it Ime just starting to learn it HAVE FUN.
most of the comments ive read dont talk about the words .its a good meaningful song and she sings it with feeling and plays well. if theres anyone out there who can do it better put it on youtubeand, we can comment on you VILE ERIC.
There are some voices that translate feelings so well that you have to just shut up and listen. I think she creates some great dynamics in this song...great!
Guitar work is good, but voice is very pitchy. Lot of very flat points and large lack of control and forced lilts are what contribute to that end I think. Still very talented though.
Who said anything about an opera? She just needs a little vocal training to hit the lilts she's attempting, otherwise they end up without the sharp note changes and fall flat. It ends up hurting the vocal note and tone she's attempting to hit after the lilt. She doesn't always miss them, but more often than not she does. Like I said, she's still very talented, just needs some vocal work.
ooooh man.... she makes me want to cry

listening after years to this song and it is still as beautiful as the day it came out and i checked it the first time.
very funny to see, that candyrat uses the same mic as me (akg c 1000s) ; pretty good microphone for the amount of money (imo)

I agree with you, Woody. Sooo.... I'll shut up.

There are some voices that translate feelings so well that you have to just shut up and listen. I think she creates some great dynamics in this song...great!

Guitar work is good, but voice is very pitchy. Lot of very flat points and large lack of control and forced lilts are what contribute to that end I think. Still very talented though.

@vileric
this is not an opera )
her voice is perfect for this song
rajahua 2 years ago
Who said anything about an opera? She just needs a little vocal training to hit the lilts she's attempting, otherwise they end up without the sharp note changes and fall flat. It ends up hurting the vocal note and tone she's attempting to hit after the lilt. She doesn't always miss them, but more often than not she does. Like I said, she's still very talented, just needs some vocal work.
