if you had used sand, the reeds would have grown faster, and they would just fall right back down so you wouldn't need to spawn in the sticky pistons, although pancake's response is the most efficient overall

Of course, you could use melons or pumpkins and they would grow back without you having to place them again. And also you could set it up to something that has a dispenser and a pressure plate and the pressure plate powers the dispenser. It would shoot out a drop and every time the drop disappears it would shoot out another drop. Drops disappear at about the same rate as reeds/melons/pumpkins grow, so if you wire that up to your farm you wouldn't even have to hit a switch or place more reeds

It's simpler to use normal pistons, but have them positioned so that they push into the middle cane. that way, you don't need slimeballs to create the device, and you don't need to replant the canes after activating it. Using a button instead of a lever is also nice, but hardly worth the benefit of only having to click once. Just sayin'

I will just give you one word of advice on how you could have made this more efficient. Instead of putting the piston below the dirt just put it on the side a block up so it could knock off the 2nd row and higher. It would save you plenty of time instead of restocking it.

Chimney, I don't want to go on about how you could've made this more effecient, because its your first time and I understand that. But if you want to have the same design but without spawning sticky pistons, you could have planted the reeds on sand so when it pops up it would fall back down on to the piston.

automated reed farm - water on level 0, reed on 1, piston on 2. line it up, hook all the pistons to a button. they autoharvest a bunch. best way to do an automated reed farm.

Chim, I think it would have been more efficient if you had blocks push above the one that is touching the ground, that way you don't have to keep placing sugar cane back down for it to grow again. That is how I would improve the design, otherwise it's good.

just pointing out...from the time that you spend with getting the blocks needed for this then hitting the lever pushing up the dirt so that you have to go through the water *slowly* collecting the sugar cane then placing it all down you could have gotten 50000000000 sugar canes by just hitting the 2nd cane in the stack

That design is really bad. Tje best one is that you put the pistons in the wall and pushes the second sugarcane so you always have the one on the bottom left. Then you don't need do replant it. Also, cover the water so you don't need to swim every time
