  • I've been following various RV build projects.... and have a question, So you have to put together the major assemblies using clecos and once you get it done you have to take it apart and corrosion treat the aluminum and reassemble with rivets, is it not possible to do it all in one step?

  • @soloban81 Hi, the builder replied: Two part reply, part one: The purpose of initially clecoing the parts together is to allow accurate match drilling of the mating parts. Following drilling, deburring and dimpling of parts that are to be riveted is necessary. This process removes/damages any corrosion proofing previously applied. Applying corrosion proofing to assembled parts is equally a poor idea as it fails to treat the very places where moisture and airborne salts can get trapped.

  • Part two: Failure to match drill is also not an option, as it not only causes static stresses between parts to remain but also leaves the axially aligned punch marks in the holes which are potential stress raisers for cracks to form in the skins and ribs.

There is no short cut to doing the job properly !!

  • pretty cool

  • Thank you....airplanes and the Moonlight Sonata just go well together...must be a pilot thing...

  • Good luck! Looks like work/fun!

  • nice work !

hope you get it done soon.
