  • I rarely use the word hero, but I'm tempted to here.

  • love the history and watching stuff like this. Amazing how well preserved the bodies are.

  • Tissue specimens taken from those exhumed and reburied did show lethal amounts of lead. Turned out that when the purveyors of the canned goods won the contract they had no experience in canning. At the seams of the cans large amounts of lead solder were used and leeched into the contents. What made things worse, the survivors heated the cans releasing even more lead into the food.

  • Kinda reminds me of Tom Petty @ 1:55...why? I dunno...

  • i learned about this in school a couple months ago

  • sorry but the pics of ppl was nasty but its sad

  • The look like they died in a wind tunnel.

  • Great vid. The Terror, Dan Simmons, well researched book, really gets over how cold and hungry you can get. Has an extra twist as well!!

  • It's amazing, unbelievable, yet scary how the eye balls are still intact. And it's so sad how the expidition went wrong.

  • They just chilling bro.

  • cryostasis

  • The English were such damned fools in the Arctic. Even standing face to face with a people who had adapted very well to the conditions they reckoned they had better methods. And they did this for hundreds of years! Oh well, nature did her usual weeding out and you're looking at it.

  • como se llama la cancion de fondo o quien la hizo?????? es hermosa.

  • @TheGonzalo1982 Es "Falls" (Cascadas) de Ennio Morricone, banda sonora de la película La Misión (1986).

  • so sad but beautifuly done.

  • I think basically they killed the Eskimos ...

  • Very sad indeed...

  • those poor boys

  • If that is what 1800 dead bodies look like, I wonder what my 1998 dead grandpa's body looks like...

  • @Darkside780 well if he was put into ground that is solid permafrost he would look pretty well preserved I am sure and sorry to hear about your grandpa

  • They look like Stephen Hawkins

  • Awwwww they're smiling :)

  • why am i watching this shit?...

  • Uh D:

  • what's the music? please

  • im not trolling in anyway but can any one tell me what causes the mouth to be that way? there teeth are exposed, why is this?

  • @SaphireMonroe because the flesh dries and shrinks or flaps open as there's no muscle control, for obvious reasons. They have good teeth for their era, by the way.

  • @SaphireMonroe

it was caused by the ice and cold which helped preserve the bodies

  • Jesus Christ,so scary.

  • the owner of Titanic is JP Morgen, he was surppos to be on this ship with others, but canceled. I wish he made it.

  • @9ying9 Right on.

  • I would hate to be the last one alive there all alone :(

  • I remember seeing this on t.v. years ago and if I'm not mistaken one of the explorers who found the remains was actually one of the decedents great grandsons. Can you imagine staring into the face of your great, great grandfather more than a century after his passing. Not sure that's how I'd want to remember him, but to each his own. Kinda creepy if you ask me.

  • that's a beautiful way you've set the music to it; great choice of a tune. Really helps change your persepctive from seeing creepy dead people to beautiful remains of a noble cause gone wrong

  • 1:47 they tied his arms down because they didnt want him to raise from the dead and eat them

  • All of their faces seem to be locked in an open mouth teeth clenched grimace. One can only imagine the horror of being so, so, cold, that you die from freezing and are frozen with your last expression - eyes open and teeth gritted.

I can't fathom how awful this whole expedition was on all of those brave men.

  • @CasuallyObservant All of em did not even froze some of em died cause of the lack of oxygen. When you are extremely cold you dont breath well.

  • @vivikification

the men died of hypothermia, exposure, and disease but one thing that has been mentioned as one of the main causes for their deaths is the food they were eating between 1845 and 1848 was toxic, having become contaminated with lead because of the poorly made tins it was stored in and when the ships where abanadoned the survivors were acting irrationally and took few items needed to survive in the arctic after they abandoned their ships

  • @snakes3425 the food was stored in some of the 1st tin containers, supposedly sealed with lead. Ingesting lead contaminated food w / not only kill them, the lead would supposedly aid in the preservation of their bodies along with the cold.

I wonder if the Franklin Expedition members had any descendants ?

  • @knoxvilleguy2

In the case of the men on Beechey Island it was ruled that that they died of pnamonua and their conditions were made worse by Lead Poisoning.

Yes many of them did indeed have families when they departed, and most have decendents, the archeologists who conducted the dig on the graves in 1984 had to make sure any decendents were made aware of what they were planning to do

  • @snakes3425 Back w / the art of canning food was still new & not perfected, the lead hit their nervous systems. I understand tissue can also be preserved by arsenic, strychnine & mercury because they kill bacteria just as effectively as extreme cold or heat. 1845 - 1848 wasn't all that terribly long ago, so it makes sense that they had / have still - living descendants.

  • @knoxvilleguy2

At the time the Royal Navy was in charge of the expedition, not a private company or museum, the contract went to the lowest bidder, who had less then 3 months to prepare the tins. The Lead alone wouldn't have killed the men, but if they fell ill at any time during the voyage it would've by the time the first attempt at reaching safety was made the lead was clearly affecting their judgement. As for preservation the ice and permafrost preserved the bodies

  • @snakes3425 -

I'm not a forensicss expert or a pathologist, etc., even though I took forensics courses, but I wonder how the preservation of their DNA would be. All the factors w / probably have made hash out of them, even though one w / think the extreme cold would keep the strands intact.

  • say john hartnell in a history book in school and laughed cuz he was sexy............ now i know what happened to him and i was nearly in tears :(

  • was that my mommy

  • is john hartnell related to william hartnell

  • Wow they are quite young and to be sent on a expedition. It's almost like us sending our young folk to the moon today!.

  • @NeoFalcon69

For the average sailor on the expedition, it was the lure of adventure that convinced them to sign up, venturing into the unknown in search of the holy grail of Arctic exploration: The Northwest Passage, many were confident of success, they had all the latest technology and British culture and methods were seen as superior in their eyes, keep in mind this was 1845, but the loss of the expedition prooved that nature cares little for titles, rank, or social status

  • 2:52 they found a guy standing frozen!? lol?

  • 2:00 would make a great screamer

  • The pic at 2:00 used to freak me out back when i was in grade 8...now i just say RIP young men!

  • the creepiest thing ever would be that pocket watch still running in the right time:P

  • Wholly Macroll

  • Hi, may I ask what the name of the song is please? Thank you

  • @TheHistorylover99 It's posted at the top right under the viewer count. Ennio Morricone's soundtrack from the movie "The Mission."

  • It's so horrible how the all died. They volunteered for this impossible mission and some of them probably knew they wouldn't survive. These three on Beechey Island are still preserved, and I know we had to dig them up to see how they died.... but let's not gawk at them, they deserve respect. Their bodies have a lot to teach us.

  • @IHateDrumMachines

It was bad enough that they died alone and forgotten, yet in the long run these men were at least spared the nightmare that befell their comrades. One can only imagine what it was like, discovering too late your three years worth of supplies was too toxic to eat, unable to hunt or keep warm, watching your friends die one by one from sickness and starvation or driven to madness. This expedition was romaticized, but in reality these men faced hell on earth

  • how long have these bodys been under water ?

  • @derangedslayer1 Permafrost! 160 years!

  • @iamurdad77 that means you could fine some body inside titanic ? well captured as this body ?

  • @derangedslayer1 no,its not cold enough and there are many creatures, microorganisms in the ocean that would feed on the body i would imagine any bodys trapped on the ship owuld have been almost 100% skeletal in the first months of the ship going down

  • Ma che impressione!!!

  • ...you forgot cannibalism dude.

  • its creepy on how well they were kept in that ice

  • they all look like they died happy

  • @TheGoodwill56

    great smiles on their faces

  • @TheGoodwill56 - Not a funny comment. They look like they died screaming in fear or horror. Awful.

  • It's sad what happened to all the crew members. I hope that they are resting in peace now.

  • Respect for the Braves !

  • Prey thee rest in peace, they expedition is at an end.

  • They dont respects the death !

  • its the eyes i find fascinating

  • umm why do you show pics of grave sites when there is no land at the north pole?? where the fuck are those graves at ??some island we have yet to discover

  • @TwofiddyFourstroke

This is Beechey Island, Canada in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. They weren't venturing to the North Pole, the goal was to chart the Northwest Passage, the then mythical sea lane that would allow ships to take a short cut around North America on route to Europe, yes the passage is real, and lately the ice hasn't been blocking it as often or as long, so there is once again talk about trying to open the passage to shipping

  • Haha it reminds me Lady Gaga too :D lol

  • wow creepy yet you could see pain , torment , sorrow in there eyes . Sort of fuck im going to die ahhh cold lol

  • what is the difference between mummies and zombies mummies plays in the toilet sorry for my bad inglish

  • @predetator8 zombies are meant to be people that come back to life after they die.

  • They look cold.

  • I'm shocked that no one ever made a movie about this ill-fated expedition.

  • @sgauden02 I am too. I'd rather see a movie about them than another lame remake.

  • @sgauden02 There have been numerous documentaries on this expedition. I've seen some on regular tv and several on PBS.

  • @MyMoppet52 Yeah, but I mean it'd be great to see an actual live action Hollywood film about this.

  • @sgauden02 Sorry. You're right. It would probably be a blockbuster. I didn't understand. Thanks.

  • @MyMoppet52 I'm shocked that nobody's ever thought about making this into a film yet.

  • @MyMoppet52 Antony Hopkins as Franklin!

  • @emmers57 Great casting, but get him quick before he ages much more. He'd be perfect.

  • @sgauden02

In terms of a movie you have to piece together exactally what happened between May 1845 and the last recorded sighting of Franklin Survivors between 1852 and 1858. But I have to agree the story is begging for a movie

  • ...HOLY SHIT. respect tough RIP!

  • Слава героям!

  • Google arseholes putting up adverts for funeral directors while watching this! Fuckin adverts! (interesting vid BTW)

  • these mummies were found on beychey island

  • i've been screaming the whole time, but wow this is very interesting.

  • Those mummies look like they are freezing their asses off!

  • ОЧЕНЬ ХОРОШЕЕ ВИДЕО! (VERY NICE!)

  • how about those dinoaours on the ark...? since when did dinos and man co-exist...? also,

back in those days "the world" was only known of as that area. and still not explained is how all the animals survived with each other for the many years it took for the flood waters to receed and the animals to re-populate as to feed one another and this does include plant life.

  • Interesting video, well done

  • Looks like my aunt connie when she's hungover on a sunday..Lol

  • They found Jimmy Hoffa...Wow

  • Comment removed

  • @1:07 Thats a face I recognize

  • Its a fascinating story. I was familiar with story of Sir John Franklin but after reading "The Terror" by Dan Simmons which is "historical" fiction I had to read as much as posible about the subject.

  • There are 3 graves on Beechy Island from the first winter in which the ships were ice bound. Everything was still going as planned at this point so these 3 men had traditional burials/graves. There are many burial sites and areas full of bones on King William Island but none like this

  • How exactly were these bodies found? Are there more?

  • It's fascinating to be able to see a 180 year old body that looks like mine and yours, like it would feel the same to touch.

  • @FavouriteBit except wet soggy disgusting and dead! And you feel so bad for them its not itreresting at all because thats like saying Oh its cool these people are dead but still look human! ITS NOT COOL BECAUSE THEY ARE DEAAADDDD

  • @FavouriteBit my body does not look like that

  • @Plasjif When I said 'looks like mines and yours' I didn't mean that I wouldn't look twice if I saw him walking down the street. However, you can tell right away that it's the body of a human being who existed long ago.

  • Ox Cheek was not the breakfast of champions. As I remember from watching a TV show on this story, the tin cans that held much of food had a very high lead content, which poisoned the meat and helped cause the sailors to become ill and die.

  • The eyes...

  • what is this music?

  • @avvoltoio31 The great Ennio Morriconne's theme of the 1986 movie ''The Mission''.

  • @caporalchef4 Thank you for your help :)

  • i dont know why but for some strange reason i have always been interested in people that died along time ago and seeing what they have been buried with and what kind of cool stuff lies in their grave.. a little dark aye?

  • @Mattheweueu Absolutely not dark. If you get past the macabre death factor. Their tales are extremely interesting. Thats why this vid has almost a million hits!

  • pay ur fucking respects people these men had a horrible end to there lives, these men risked there lives in the name of exploration and that makes them beautiful people who i will always respect them for

  • @OnlyRevolutions17: Yeah, I absolutely hate the "OMG so creepy!" responses I see on this comment page. The bodies in this video aren't sideshow attractions, they are real human beings who met a very sad end.

  • Não sei inglês mas gostei de ver as múmias e de ver o poder de DEUS

  • It's quite frankly disgusting how little respect people have for those who are no longer with us. Not just talking about for this video but in others as well. You all make me sick.

  • @OnlyRevolutions17 I second that.

  • thats so creepy!!!!!!! OMG I dont think ill sleep well tonight, and they had to get a really really close up on tht one guy's face, i almost pasted out of shock of creepyness!!!!!!

  • I am sure the Tomb stones were built later. Because the last to die are the most unfortunate, because there is no one to bury them and their bodies are the ones left outside and turned in to skeletons. The first to die were the weak but they were looked after by the others and buried.I feel sorry for the Sledge Dogs they have taken too, they mostly get eaten first. They work for the man and they get eaten by the man too.. Have you seen the movie 'Eight Below' which was based on a true story?

  • I read that these men died from eating food out of lead cans which weakened their immune systems to the point that other diseases eventually killed them. And they were already lugging around 1,200 pounds of materials in a lifeboat so that just killed them faster. They all died at different times. But if you read about it, there is evidence that they were taking care of eachother. It's very interesting. R.I.P guys!

  • It's amazing how little respect people apparently have for the dead. So much for common decency.

  • I'd swab her crusty vagina for sand mites and Dinosaur Holocausts!

  • 1:54 thats what I see when I look in the mirror when I'm high :O

  • I am often drawn back to this very touching & moving video...the music is so mesmerising too

  • They all seem to have beautiful teeth. Very interesting thanks for sharing.

  • their just chillin....g! why do they all look like they are going really fast without a helmet on?

  • They were explorers. Bless their souls.

  • Why are they all smiling?

  • The real ice men XD

  • @motherofthreesons

And that was all the British fault was it? My people were fed to lions by the Romans but I'm not bleating like a baby. They destroyed our country, wiped out our people, stole our money then cleared off. Then came danes, vikings and normans... The British didn't sit around feeling sorry for themselves though, they did something!!!

  • What about William Braine?

  • RIP!!!!!!!

  • @blitzkreig052777 & in turn you do the same ? you just use your tongue ; )

  • Why did they have to disturb the graves?

  • lol hes dead xD xD hehehehehhe :P

  • @TheMotherofthreesons Where do you come up with the accusations of what these "creeps" would probably do? That a racist thing on your part?

  • @blitzkreig052777 Well considering what was done to my people, rape, slaughter, murder, torture, starvation, scalping which was started by the British having our children feed to bears for entertainment, having our languages taken away, losing our medicines, "Just a wild guess".

  • @TheMotherofthreesons

What a sad, bitter individual you are. I hope you are not inculcating your "3 sons" with your poisonous views.

  • who really gives shit about those creeps.

  • Comment removed

  • may they rest in peace.....

  • грустное видео (

  • Sad story

  • oh god, its looks like they died only a month ago.

  • perfect made

  • The background music goes so well.

  • Spooky corpse is spooky.

  • can't remember the exact title of the song but it is off of the "Powder" soundtrack.

  • That's sad. Those on that death voyage to the Arctic, some at a very young age, the youngest probably not having experienced marriage and having their own children yet, and to die in that lonely bleak and desolate place.

  • you wonder if they ate their own ?

  • Where did they get the wood for coffins?

  • @kathybrisky I watched a documentary on the History channel...once it was clear the ship was going nowhere they took wood from the hull to make coffins for the dead.

  • John Torrington kinda looks like Lady Gaga.

  • @GODSNEEZED

NO YOUR THE GAGA ONE DUMMY!Those ppl died for us..respect please!

  • @GOUGOUNETTE dies for us? in what way xD

  • @GOUGOUNETTE My comment had nothing to do with life or death! I was just pointing out the resemblance. Besides, Lady Gaga is one Faaaacking Talented Bitch! If anything, it was a complement to John Torrington! He would be proud!

  • @GODSNEEZED

    ok...lol..
