Tissue specimens taken from those exhumed and reburied did show lethal amounts of lead. Turned out that when the purveyors of the canned goods won the contract they had no experience in canning. At the seams of the cans large amounts of lead solder were used and leeched into the contents. What made things worse, the survivors heated the cans releasing even more lead into the food.
The English were such damned fools in the Arctic. Even standing face to face with a people who had adapted very well to the conditions they reckoned they had better methods. And they did this for hundreds of years! Oh well, nature did her usual weeding out and you're looking at it.
@Darkside780 well if he was put into ground that is solid permafrost he would look pretty well preserved I am sure and sorry to hear about your grandpa
@SaphireMonroe because the flesh dries and shrinks or flaps open as there's no muscle control, for obvious reasons. They have good teeth for their era, by the way.
I remember seeing this on t.v. years ago and if I'm not mistaken one of the explorers who found the remains was actually one of the decedents great grandsons. Can you imagine staring into the face of your great, great grandfather more than a century after his passing. Not sure that's how I'd want to remember him, but to each his own. Kinda creepy if you ask me.
that's a beautiful way you've set the music to it; great choice of a tune. Really helps change your persepctive from seeing creepy dead people to beautiful remains of a noble cause gone wrong
All of their faces seem to be locked in an open mouth teeth clenched grimace. One can only imagine the horror of being so, so, cold, that you die from freezing and are frozen with your last expression - eyes open and teeth gritted.
I can't fathom how awful this whole expedition was on all of those brave men.
the men died of hypothermia, exposure, and disease but one thing that has been mentioned as one of the main causes for their deaths is the food they were eating between 1845 and 1848 was toxic, having become contaminated with lead because of the poorly made tins it was stored in and when the ships where abanadoned the survivors were acting irrationally and took few items needed to survive in the arctic after they abandoned their ships
"food they were eating between 1845 and 1848 was toxic, having become contaminated with lead because of the poorly made tins"
I saw that documentary. Remains of tins in the trash had large globs of solder in contact with food, which released even more lead when the same tins were put over fire to heat food. Tissue samples from the bodies showed 10 times allowed levels of lead. Explains bad decisions like walking south to Hudson Bay instead of north to whaling grounds.
@snakes3425 the food was stored in some of the 1st tin containers, supposedly sealed with lead. Ingesting lead contaminated food w / not only kill them, the lead would supposedly aid in the preservation of their bodies along with the cold.
I wonder if the Franklin Expedition members had any descendants ?
In the case of the men on Beechey Island it was ruled that that they died of pnamonua and their conditions were made worse by Lead Poisoning.
Yes many of them did indeed have families when they departed, and most have decendents, the archeologists who conducted the dig on the graves in 1984 had to make sure any decendents were made aware of what they were planning to do
@snakes3425 Back w / the art of canning food was still new & not perfected, the lead hit their nervous systems. I understand tissue can also be preserved by arsenic, strychnine & mercury because they kill bacteria just as effectively as extreme cold or heat. 1845 - 1848 wasn't all that terribly long ago, so it makes sense that they had / have still - living descendants.
At the time the Royal Navy was in charge of the expedition, not a private company or museum, the contract went to the lowest bidder, who had less then 3 months to prepare the tins. The Lead alone wouldn't have killed the men, but if they fell ill at any time during the voyage it would've by the time the first attempt at reaching safety was made the lead was clearly affecting their judgement. As for preservation the ice and permafrost preserved the bodies
I'm not a forensicss expert or a pathologist, etc., even though I took forensics courses, but I wonder how the preservation of their DNA would be. All the factors w / probably have made hash out of them, even though one w / think the extreme cold would keep the strands intact.
For the average sailor on the expedition, it was the lure of adventure that convinced them to sign up, venturing into the unknown in search of the holy grail of Arctic exploration: The Northwest Passage, many were confident of success, they had all the latest technology and British culture and methods were seen as superior in their eyes, keep in mind this was 1845, but the loss of the expedition prooved that nature cares little for titles, rank, or social status
It's so horrible how the all died. They volunteered for this impossible mission and some of them probably knew they wouldn't survive. These three on Beechey Island are still preserved, and I know we had to dig them up to see how they died.... but let's not gawk at them, they deserve respect. Their bodies have a lot to teach us.
It was bad enough that they died alone and forgotten, yet in the long run these men were at least spared the nightmare that befell their comrades. One can only imagine what it was like, discovering too late your three years worth of supplies was too toxic to eat, unable to hunt or keep warm, watching your friends die one by one from sickness and starvation or driven to madness. This expedition was romaticized, but in reality these men faced hell on earth
@derangedslayer1 no,its not cold enough and there are many creatures, microorganisms in the ocean that would feed on the body i would imagine any bodys trapped on the ship owuld have been almost 100% skeletal in the first months of the ship going down
umm why do you show pics of grave sites when there is no land at the north pole?? where the fuck are those graves at ??some island we have yet to discover
This is Beechey Island, Canada in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. They weren't venturing to the North Pole, the goal was to chart the Northwest Passage, the then mythical sea lane that would allow ships to take a short cut around North America on route to Europe, yes the passage is real, and lately the ice hasn't been blocking it as often or as long, so there is once again talk about trying to open the passage to shipping
In terms of a movie you have to piece together exactally what happened between May 1845 and the last recorded sighting of Franklin Survivors between 1852 and 1858. But I have to agree the story is begging for a movie
how about those dinoaours on the ark...? since when did dinos and man co-exist...? also,
back in those days "the world" was only known of as that area. and still not explained is how all the animals survived with each other for the many years it took for the flood waters to receed and the animals to re-populate as to feed one another and this does include plant life.

@Mattheweueu Absolutely not dark. If you get past the macabre death factor. Their tales are extremely interesting. Thats why this vid has almost a million hits!

@OnlyRevolutions17: Yeah, I absolutely hate the "OMG so creepy!" responses I see on this comment page. The bodies in this video aren't sideshow attractions, they are real human beings who met a very sad end.

thats so creepy!!!!!!! OMG I dont think ill sleep well tonight, and they had to get a really really close up on tht one guy's face, i almost pasted out of shock of creepyness!!!!!!
I am sure the Tomb stones were built later. Because the last to die are the most unfortunate, because there is no one to bury them and their bodies are the ones left outside and turned in to skeletons. The first to die were the weak but they were looked after by the others and buried.I feel sorry for the Sledge Dogs they have taken too, they mostly get eaten first. They work for the man and they get eaten by the man too.. Have you seen the movie 'Eight Below' which was based on a true story?
I read that these men died from eating food out of lead cans which weakened their immune systems to the point that other diseases eventually killed them. And they were already lugging around 1,200 pounds of materials in a lifeboat so that just killed them faster. They all died at different times. But if you read about it, there is evidence that they were taking care of eachother. It's very interesting. R.I.P guys!
And that was all the British fault was it? My people were fed to lions by the Romans but I'm not bleating like a baby. They destroyed our country, wiped out our people, stole our money then cleared off. Then came danes, vikings and normans... The British didn't sit around feeling sorry for themselves though, they did something!!!
@blitzkreig052777 Well considering what was done to my people, rape, slaughter, murder, torture, starvation, scalping which was started by the British having our children feed to bears for entertainment, having our languages taken away, losing our medicines, "Just a wild guess".
it's like whenever i see deadbodies of great people,,,,,,,,,i usually think,,that damn what's the purpose of living if we have to die one f..... day.....we will be just skeleton one day....just like them.....think about it.......??.....something else is the purpose of our life......and most of us keeps on ignoring it
That's sad. Those on that death voyage to the Arctic, some at a very young age, the youngest probably not having experienced marriage and having their own children yet, and to die in that lonely bleak and desolate place.
@kathybrisky I watched a documentary on the History channel...once it was clear the ship was going nowhere they took wood from the hull to make coffins for the dead.
@GOUGOUNETTE My comment had nothing to do with life or death! I was just pointing out the resemblance. Besides, Lady Gaga is one Faaaacking Talented Bitch! If anything, it was a complement to John Torrington! He would be proud!
I rarely use the word hero, but I'm tempted to here.

R.I.P guys!

It's amazing how little respect people apparently have for the dead. So much for common decency.

@TheMotherofthreesons Where do you come up with the accusations of what these "creeps" would probably do? That a racist thing on your part?
blitzkreig052777 3 months ago
@blitzkreig052777 Well considering what was done to my people, rape, slaughter, murder, torture, starvation, scalping which was started by the British having our children feed to bears for entertainment, having our languages taken away, losing our medicines, "Just a wild guess".

What a sad, bitter individual you are. I hope you are not inculcating your "3 sons" with your poisonous views.

That's sad. Those on that death voyage to the Arctic, some at a very young age, the youngest probably not having experienced marriage and having their own children yet, and to die in that lonely bleak and desolate place.

Where did they get the wood for coffins?
kathybrisky 3 months ago
@kathybrisky I watched a documentary on the History channel...once it was clear the ship was going nowhere they took wood from the hull to make coffins for the dead.

OpaSann0 3 months ago
@GOUGOUNETTE My comment had nothing to do with life or death! I was just pointing out the resemblance. Besides, Lady Gaga is one Faaaacking Talented Bitch! If anything, it was a complement to John Torrington! He would be proud!
