Dear Universe, it is good to see such a good Teacher out here. I am so impressed with this GrandMaster's Teaching(s) & work here. He is wonderful to see. His student(s) are also very good to see, and very good student(s). The Teacher in this video is in awesome good health, and is an honor to see him Teach. WTF, what I said was a reply to a guy who said traditional martial arts are not realistic. The "I don't want to hurt anyone" means if someone mugs you, they are already past the point of reason and deserve a violent reaction. When some commercialized schools that LOOK traditional fail to train with realistic attacks, they are hurting the reputation and understanding of TMA's.

Great video and great moves. Not trolling, but I think we don't need a new martial art to beat the modern opponent of the modern warrior. We need a martial art to teach non-aggression philosophy, like Aikido does. I went to Aikido due to its philosophy. The Seibukan is really a beautiful and efficient MA, but I wonder why to invent another way of aggression. Maybe I am naive in Seibukan and wonder about the inner philosophies of it.
Most of the defenses shown in this video assume you're good enough and fast enough to actually catch a person's arm or wrist in mid air - not a likely scenario. You need to first trap, then soften them up, then you can apply the defense. Otherwise they'll try to counter and the techniques shown won't work.
@Krandolph17 If you have any doubt, Julio Toribio, Kancho is very welcoming and is a very pleasant person. I'm sure you could visit him in Monterey CA or another dojo and see for yourself.
i am in seibukan jujutsu..i am training under logan thornton...i've met julio in person and HES ONE OF THE COOLEST PEOPLE EVER! and i understand every thing they say!
i no the beauty in martial arts but i was wondering if there would be away to show how some forms would work in the regular fight cause most fights it doesnt go like in demonstrations
It cut off the rest of what I said but in a nut shell a we are not taught to use our training to promote violence in any form unless we are in immediate danger. A true martial artist understands this. All my respect to Kancho Toribio he is a great man and teacher.
I have studied in both Gracie jujitsu and seibukan jujutsu and both are amazing martial arts and both have there pros and cons. Now for those that are knocking this art and saying " I would drop him with my wrestling/MMA" have never actually taken the time to actually study the art. Yes MMA is very effective but is still based around rules you come and try and take some one down with a triangle/arm/leg bar etc. Sorry but I will go straight to you most vulnerable points (testicles, eyes, etc.) w
awsome video you have made skills kancho. i started learning jujitsu a year ago and dont kno how lived 23 years without it thankyou for the video ouss.
had some gentlemen from a seibukan dojo in my area visit my school for a belt promotion. I was extremely impressed with both their skill and character. Many good things to say about this organization from my personal experience.
i just taught the importance of this today...if you get your arm locked like that and its twisted your either gonna get your elbow torn and broke or your gonna roll...in this style and many other styles we as the attacker know whats coming. So we jump to prevent injury. Its working with our partner so that no one gets hurt. But when done actually it hurts like hell. Ive had it done to me
people are stupid... im getting really irritated from the comments on this. these are planned situations but even going to one class, they explain different scenarios and situations so when something dose happen regardless to what happens ur ready and this martial art teaches you to adapt. if som1 isnt guna budge here go there, if not there distract then u can go there. ect..
@MegaBlazing mma isnt a real fight. its a controlled fight. and its not like u really do these techniques in a real fight. if i actually went to class i could call you out but i havnt ben to the dojo in in months... but startin comes my bday and shodan in summer!
Great to see Julio Toribio Sensei doing well. I studied at Seibukan Dojo in Monterey in the early 90's. Twenty years ago, he was a very impressive martial artist with multiple black belts in Aikido, Jujutsu and Kenjitsu (and those are just the ones I Know of). He must be incredible today, and an amazing person I feel blessed to have known.
Some of these techniques are ok some of these are unrealistic. If it weren't for his partners some of these would end up in failure. Zero resistance partial realism. A great partner can make the worst crap look like gold.
Some of the attacks are traditional based. The basis of certain techniques are reliant to these traditional attacks and the traditional attacks had to be taught in which most attackers aren't so schooled. Also, some of the defensive techniques take way too long to accomplish making resistance possible. I know that they were maneuvering slow for the viewers, but, my statement still stands.
he wasnt full speed and wasnt going full strength if he did that would jsut be stupid since the person's arms would snap and fall off in a few seconds. if someone was fighting back they would know what was going on since of how fast he could really go
Many of the attacks were still outdated and the defences still would take too much time for them to be effective. Real fights last seconds not minutes and wasting your time with overcomplicated techniques which rely on you knowing exactly what attack is being thrown at you is self defeating. The question then becomes "What techniques would work
?" and the answer is simple. The longer a technique takes to accomplish the less effective it will be.
It's called "MARTIAL ARTS" dumb ass! You know, the " arts of war and fighting"? Also, don't be all defensive if you consider this on the art side of MA. Art is suppose to be critiqued and as far as I'm concerned I stand by what I've written. One more thing, don't be a cock knocker!!!!
The fastest way from 1 point to another is a straight line. This alongside the short timespan allowed for a successfull technique usually forces people into more direct approches in defending themselves. In a real fight all this time wasting movement (which relies on compliance of your opponent) would lead more towards self destruction than self defence.
In other words, short, fast, more straight to the point attacks along side of schrewd and reliable defences make self defence far easier and effective.
Excellent demonstration of jiujitsu, this should be the goal of all martial artists, to become one with the art, and then you become the art as displayed by Mr. Julio Toribio.
Some excellent movement and control I liked it!!!! Only slight down side was that early on in the vid the Uke seem to just fling themselfs on the floor(shame) Dont get me wrong I know that omote kote gaeshi hurts but come on.... other than that not bad at all!!!
i really like what you do jensenbellin i really appreciate it, but just one thing, i`d like to know what you`re saying i think in japanese words after finishing each tecnique???
Incidentally, Toribio Kancho has never and will never refer to himself as a grandmaster. Other people refer to him as that, but none of his students. They simply call him "Kancho", which is "house leader" in Japanese.
Becuase it is his own personal style? He developed it. If you look closely you'll see traces of aikido, jijutsu and bujinkan in it. He's shihan in bujinkan and what....3rd dan aikido?
Wow I got to say this is a really beautiful and graceful style of martial arts that I've seen so far. I was just checking to see if there was someone with the same last name and end up finding a great martial artist has it. Who know maybe I might head up there to Monterey when I'm in Cali next time. Thanks for the vid Jesen.
Kancho is the real deal! For all you doubting Thomas' out there, I have been to the Montery Dojo for Gasshuku 2009. This truly is the 'Modern Day Martial Arts'. I have trained in Seibukan Jujutsu as well as other martial art forms and Seibukan Jujutsu is a wonderful tool for any martialist. It is the real deal and it ROCKS! Try it nd you'll like it. Onegai shimasu.
That is why traditional martial arts are not considered effective, and not respected much in tournaments. I don't want to hurt anyone, but if they have crossed the line to threaten you, they can not be trusted. No sensible person starts fighs. Someone who does that has no self controll and for that reason they will not respond to logic.
I have been a traditional martial artist for more than 30 years. I will do no more damage than is necessary. However True traditional martial arts teach all levels from simple holds to kiling strikes.
I agree. But what is a necessary level? Some people will not stop when a wrist is dislocated. That is when you need an instant strike to incapacitate. And 30 years of training doesn't mean they have trained to react correctly. I am not trying to insult you or your school. The problem with the good traditional arts is that they don't train with enough force because they would put students in the hospital every day. Grappling is the exception since they can simulate a break by tapping.
You never no if you will ever have to kill, someone without skill may have to where as a skilled person may not have to. People who don't train to kill, are more likely to die in a life and death struggle than someone who does.
It happens.
If you train for the worst and push come's to shove, at least u have the weapons to defend yourself..
@ShotokanTanto 0o. From what i learned in sport Karate, we fight 1 on 1 for sparring not matter the platform. What my friend learned from traditional Karate is to fight against dozens of fellow students for real sparring to prove strength and valor.
Do you mean that "sportified" martial arts are more "effective" than traditonal ones? Traditional techniques being "not effective" either you haven't been on a receiving end or ignorance is ripe with you...how can traditional techniques that were based on from War and years of research, NOT be effective?
"Not respected much in touraments" Either those touraments are all about making money or they have only focused on the practical side of martial arts.
I know what the first 7 or 8 are (not necessarily how to do them), but beyond that I'm muddled, maybe by the time Kancho comes to visit next year I'll be able to recognize the rest of the principles.
Nice speed, excellent rooting/ grounding in the stances. I am a Black Belt (1st dan) in Sosushi Ryu JuJitsu. Yes this guy is a master. I would love go learn from this gentlemen. As far as not working? Geez, once again the UFC/ BJJ people are more than a little confused.
@streeteffective LMAO we have all seen these graceful Martial Artists get embarrassed by MMA fighters. These tactics would hardly work on a 80 year old grandpa. I'm a wrestler and I would get my life that I could take him down and pound his face in, in less that 20 secs. This is a joke. NO RESPECT for this. You get these older out of shape "grand masters" who actually convince them selves that they are just that "grand masters" Ya right. Any Athlete a Sprinter for exp. would dominate this guy.
No, he's 53 and has been training since he was 13. One of the most truly gifted martial artists I have ever met, let alone trained with. Yes, Toribio Sensei is the real thing. And, he has the warmest personality you can imagine. Just don't... you know.
No offense taken. If you ever get to Monterey, or have the chance to do a seminar with him, I'm certain that you would find it enjoyable and educational.
Not correct. What takes time is learning how to move your body correctly, once you have that you can learn most of these techniques and be effective within 5-8 weeks. The problem is most instructors are vain and don't put the energy into their training that is neccesary. I have personally experienced this, and went from a helpless grappler to a capable one in just weeks.
Hi! I was wondering... in the description it mentions :
"2008 Gasshuku (cleansing of the soul)"
Is that the theme of the Gasshuku, or are you using some other type of character to replace the normal characters 合宿 "under one roof" or "staying together?"
MMA fighters aren't allowed to do any of this small joint manipulation. Seibukan is non-competitive and has no attacks. Apples and oranges really. In self defense situations the last place I would want to be is on the ground with the aggressor. Seibukan is better for this.
Actually, MMA competitions allow small joint manipulations, including wrists and ankle locks. Only fingers cannot be grabbed. Every technique shown here is allowed in mixed martial arts competition.
As a practitioner of aikido, I came here with prejudice, expecting some brutalization of aikido techniques. However, I soon realized how wrong I was. This is just beautiful. And through that beauty, the skill of the practitioner is apparent. Well done.
Impressive, nice demonstration and technical merit, showing the essentials and lineage following the arts of Ju-do, Karate-do, and Aiki-do, (not to be forgotten)! Without leaving them out, good break falls from your attackers!
good technique but the strikes ar so telegraped its kinda unrealistic

@ShotokanTanto 0o. From what i learned in sport Karate, we fight 1 on 1 for sparring not matter the platform. What my friend learned from traditional Karate is to fight against dozens of fellow students for real sparring to prove strength and valor.

@ShotokanTanto

Any Athlete a Sprinter for exp. would dominate this guy.

security forces are trained in these techniques they may not work in a ring but if somone is mugging you there perfect

The techniques didnt look too bad. But, Grandmaster? What is he, 30?
captainmo55 3 years ago
No, he's 53 and has been training since he was 13. One of the most truly gifted martial artists I have ever met, let alone trained with. Yes, Toribio Sensei is the real thing. And, he has the warmest personality you can imagine. Just don't... you know.

He's looking great for 53! But i completely understand, sorry if i offended.
captainmo55 3 years ago
No offense taken. If you ever get to Monterey, or have the chance to do a seminar with him, I'm certain that you would find it enjoyable and educational.

awsum flowee shit takes forever to lern and only experts can do it for real
carolarze 3 years ago
Not correct. What takes time is learning how to move your body correctly, once you have that you can learn most of these techniques and be effective within 5-8 weeks. The problem is most instructors are vain and don't put the energy into their training that is neccesary. I have personally experienced this, and went from a helpless grappler to a capable one in just weeks.

Hi! I was wondering... in the description it mentions :
"2008 Gasshuku (cleansing of the soul)"
Is that the theme of the Gasshuku, or are you using some other type of character to replace the normal characters 合宿 "under one roof" or "staying together?"

Nice vid and cool background music too, any chance to know the name of the song?

MMA fighters aren't allowed to do any of this small joint manipulation. Seibukan is non-competitive and has no attacks. Apples and oranges really. In self defense situations the last place I would want to be is on the ground with the aggressor. Seibukan is better for this.
lancerpilot 3 years ago
Actually, MMA competitions allow small joint manipulations, including wrists and ankle locks. Only fingers cannot be grabbed. Every technique shown here is allowed in mixed martial arts competition.

I LOVE NINJUTSU AND JUIJUTSU!
