they dont exist anymore... they switched from a rating system where you could give between 1 and 5 stars to a thumbs up / thumbs down system. so this video is outdated to the point that i have to take it offline, so you wont be able to respond to this comment, but you can send me a PM.

i think that most people vote either 5 or 1 stars because the other votes don't have big influence..

no. its just that sometimes you get to see some recent ratings. apart from that, there is no way to know who rated the video.

ok then, work this one out - i got given two 5 stars and one 4 star on one of my videos and 1 more mystery person gave me something else and niw my video has 2 and a half stars? how?

with two 5-star ratings, one 4-star rating, and one 1-star rating, you would get an average of 3,75, so it should be a 3.5 or 4-star rating. one of those two alternatives, and that only if we assume that the last rating was the worst possible case, a 1-star rating.

so there has to be a mistake somewhere.

i was wondering if anyone else thought that the third star which is "worth watching" should be replaced with the fourth star "pretty cool" i just feel worth watching shouldnt be behind pretty cool.

I have the idea that when a video has, let's say, 50 times 5* ratings, and you give a 4* rating, the total rating will be 4* too. Weird enough..

videos are only displayed with a 5-star rating when they exclusively and only got 5-star ratings. so, well, if you give it one 4-star rating, it doesnt show 5 stars anymore.

but it doesnt matter, internally the system is precise and calculates useful numbers, it just doesnt display it.

It doesn't work like that.. there is one video with 7 ratings, and i give it a 5* rating every day i log in, but it stays on 7 ratings.

then they have found a way to filter out multiple ratings with the same account.

i suspect they save the last 5 ratings or something. this really sucks, if they save your ratings, why cant they show you ``you have already rated this video´´ ? it would be so great to know for sure if you already watched a video.

Oh noes! My comment provoked some good insight. It would be good if they did record which videos you've rated, but that would take up a vast amount of storage space, and it wouldn't improve the quality of the site by a great margin. Most probably wouldn't notice it. :)

well, it would massively improve youtube if they then use the saved data to do something useful with it. just recording it would only be a little improvement.

but i think if they really want to improve the system.... they should completely replace it with a new one. a new kind of ratings with a new system behind it.

yes, i got most of my subscribers because of shoutouts, so i feel some kind of responsibility to give something back to the community, im already near 200 subs now. its just more effective, if patcondell with his 16,600 subscribers would do a shoutout every time then our community would look different.
