Now the pound contractor in our area and the methods they use are being challenged.

Please open the side bar, copy their emails and send them a polite email and tell them that they should be using sedation prior to euthanization for the cats like they do for their dogs.

Once lawmakers make the decision to Stop The Gassing, the three pronged approach is put into place, which is low-cost spay/neutering programs, education, and embracing fosters and rescues. And Adoption rates go up, less animals are surrendered, simply because people experience an awakening and begin to care.

It's very unfortunate that Coastal only chooses to take dogs to the vet for lethal injection.

Do the public know, when they drop their cats off there for euthanasia.. that they die in a chamber filled with CO2 gas? I don't think so.

The public more than likely didn't know at Nanaimo either. Terrible.

Have they offered to step up and get rid of the gas box? No.

Certainly not the most proactive people in animal

Gassing is legal in Canada. This needs to be changed. Mandatory S/N laws and BREEDING laws need to change. Bringing more animals into the world for money,bumping the old ones out and then killing the discarded ones as cheaply as possible. Please check back from time to time. We have 2 decisions on the gas box left. The first one was successful, and now the cats there will go to the vets for euthanization like the dogs.

It was already in the contract, would you believe it but the company wasn't following it. When it was brought to light in June, they had to stop using the box. They like that box best.

This is not okay. I live only a few miles away from Duncan and did not know that gassings are conducted in that community. I believe that Victoria's SPCA has stopped gassing. Apparently we must, all of us, personally go into these "shelters" and impounds and ensure that the word "humane" is truly present. The shelters rely on our donations and government one-time-only grants. The pounds are political locals, and the local taxpayer decides policy, if they get out and vote.

*** It was public pressure and gettiing the word out and it is working. The Victoria SPCA got rid of their gas box and got rid of the Wests at the same time. Lynn and Rick West had run that place and the gas box for many, many years.

The CRD (Capital Regional Districtgot rid of their gas box a couple of years ago and changed the manager there. He got rid of the box too saying it wasn't worth the controversy.

So it can be done.

On June 15 2009 the Nanaimo Mayor and Council voted to make the Nanaimo Pouind confirm to the terms of their contract- that all animals killed must be by lethal injection. That's includes cats who were being gassed at the pound.

Yes, shamefully, Quebec is noted to be the Capital of Puppy Mills of Canada. We have so much to do - to educate the public, pressure the governments to drastically change our existing animal laws. Our mission is to fight against all animal cruelty.

Against the inhumane treatment of animals in kill-pounds, using the gas chambers; the cruelty of all farm animals; the cruelty caused to animals before & during transportation to the slaughter house and more.

Hi Carol,

Gassing animals and puppymills are so directly connected. Go into any pound, shelter and see how many there are so young. Purebred or not, these are all displaced pets, there are too many that just aren't baby puppies and people find them not so cute anymore.

I agree! Shamefully, Quebec is known to be the capital of puppy mills in Canada. We must stop this and pressure our government to drastically change its' animal laws. There will be a huge demo on October 4th, in Quebec City, for WAD day. Come and join us if you are not far from this city. We will be demonstrating against ALL animal cruelty. The Honorable Marlene Jennings MP of N.D.G. and Lachine, Qc. will be there, amongst other prominent people.
